My only gripe with the movie is how he ended up with the platoon. I think they could have done the same thing with him imbedding and still have made him unlikeable, etc… That took me out of the movie for a few minutes. Otherwise it's one of my favorite popcorn movies.
?

Honestly i thought it was great. Just the sort of thing a smartass pissed off un general would do, with the right sarge and misfit platoon.

She is awesome, no doubt. But Krasinski is no chopped liver. Good looking, charming, big time actor/director. He's in the Handsome Men's Club, after all.

Great movie, but I have never understood why he went back two days at the very end.

My understanding is that the omega ending happens before he usually dies (day before the invasion), so he reset back at the prior time he slept. Not sure if that's right but my take on it.

It's not even the last time he slept right? Doesn't he train all afternoon, sleep some more, then deploy the next morning? He's basically rebooting back 1.5 days each time.

It's a plot loophole avoidance that starts his day after getting arrested, otherwise, he'd spend all his reboots trying not to get arrested, or going AWOL, etc.

One of the few "groundhog day" type films I could actually sit thru.

But now that I think of it, the only "groundhog day" type films I can think of is Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow.

I may be in the minority but I really liked Source Code. Jake Gyllenhaal is just awesome in general.

There are plenty of times he dies before the invasion, like when he gets run over by the truck.

I have another one.

There's a movie called Source Code, starring Jake Gyllenhaal. He repeatedly goes back in time to try and identify the bomber of a train.

I actually went to high school with Michael Arden who also plays a significant part in it.

Didn't get great reviews but I didn't mind it.

EDIT: should have read through the whole thread

I don't think it has anything to do with last time he slept other than it's probably a good insertion point. It resets the "day" but really to an Alien, what is a day? The whole point of it rebooting the day is to have time to alter events, so last time it slept could be probablematic if it dies shortly after waking. I think he goes back further the last time simply because he dies while getting "infected" quite a bit earlier.

And he does go AWOL at one point, but gets killed anyways; which I think emphasised the severity of the battle and that it wasn't just isolated to the beach.

On revisiting, maybe the alpha only has the ability to reset the day. The omega can possibly control any number of days, so he chose this one as he knew he could make amends with the General and go meet Emily Blunt.

same as bill murray waking up to "I got you babe."
Sorry for derail, but I loved that Ted Lasso used "I got you babe" in season 2 when Keeley started freaking out that every morning was the same, Roy is always there. Such a great reference.

Cruise hasn't been in a bunch of Sci-Fi movies, but they've all been good to great.

Edge of Tomorrow
Oblivion
War of the Worlds
Minority Report

Oblivion is a movie I've rewatched a ton of times. Good flick and M83 just nailed the soundtrack. I'm a big fan.

And to stay on topic, Edge of Tomorrow is really good too.

I thought they did a good job with it. It's hard to believe the aliens had the ability to remember the day to an extent, and somehow didn't figure out how to trap and un"timify" Tom Cruise.

And also that they had the macguffin in the general's office... So silly.

But it's really easy to overlook the flaws. I loved the scene where he just goes to the bar. If you could relive the day forever, 100% you'd take a few days off. And it also shows that the failed attack was basically the end of humanity at that point. Really sets the scale of failure if he didn't figure it out.

I watched Edge of Tomorrow last night because of this thread. For some reason I could never get myself to believe that it would be good. I think I was a little bit over Tom Cruise for whatever reason. This movie was awesome.
