What do you think of the third book of 1st law? I just finished it a few weeks ago for the first time.

I really don't know what to think. I feel like it has been kind of slow. My kindle tells me I am 40% of the way through and I feel like there's a lot of stuff that still needs to happen.

What about you?

I started reading Traitor's Blade by Sebastien de Castell this week. It's book 1 of a quartet, and I'm really enjoying it so far.

What are folk's opinion on Sanderson's secret project novels? They're having a sale on them right now.

They were outstanding, especially the 3 Cosmere books. If you are into the Cosmere, they are must-reads.

Read 3 and loved 2 of them. The Wizard's Guide one wasn't my thing but the other 2 are awesome. Need to read the newest one soon.

I loved it and hated it at the same time, if that makes any sense. Don't want to say too much without spoiling the ending.

I did not like the first book. Had to fight through a lot of it. But stuck with it based on feedback from people I trust. I really came around by book 3 and enjoyed it. I wouldn't consider it stellar like everyone else who seem to put it on a pedestal. I do plan to also read the three stand alone's as well after finishing the Mistborn books.

Ok just finished up. I hated it so much. I have never hated a character more than I hate Bayaz

Do the following books give us any sort of closure? This was my first time reading grimdark and it sure lives up to the name.

I plan on reading the rest of the books but I think I am going to cleanse my pallet before starting on them. Planning on reading Between Two Fires before continuing with my Abercrombie journey.

The following books continue the story, but with mostly different main characters. You see characters from the original trilogy in them. I just have the last Trilogy to finish at this point. There is a lot less fantasy elements in the second trilogy.

But yeah, I've never read a series where I started off only hating one character, (Glokta), but by the end of the last book I pretty much hated every character besides Glokta. I think that's proof of good writing, but it's definitely a different style than someone like Sanderson or Tolkien.

Dude I thought the exact same thing. Hated Glokta at first and ended up loving him in the end. West got done super dirty and that was depressing af.

I knew it was supposed to be grim and depressing but holy ***** All of that being said I absolutely loved the trilogy as a whole and can't wait to read the next books.

Glokta is also my favorite character. Though I do not want to admit I probably liked him earlier than most here I would imagine... He's just so damn interesting.

Matt Dinniman's Dungeon Crawler Carl series.

Kind of zany urban fantasy with the premise that Earth is just a seeded planet for a global Hunger Games style tv show televised across multiple galaxies and the main protagonist tells the story like living an RPG. Science basis to it all but the game is set up fantasy-style.

All the books are free to read with Kindle Unlimited

So I got hooked on these through Audible. The production is great and the books are generally hilarious. I devoured them. I know next to nothing about RPGs, but these have been a delightful change from some of the dense Sanderson stuff (which I also love).

Of course, Audible saw me eating these up and suggested the "He Who Fights Monsters" series by Travis Deverell. I'll be damned if I'm not eating these up as well. I don't know if I just really dig LitRPGs or what, but I have already burned through like 3 of these (10 book series).

It's irreverent like Dungeon Crawler Carl, but not nearly as silly and flirts more with serious as the books go on. Definitely more fantasy-adventure than science fiction. Honestly, I'm surprised how much I like it. Plus there are 10 books in the hopper, and each one is like 50 hours of audible time, so it's good use of a credit. Will it change your life? No. Will it make you think deeply? Probably not. But it entertains me on the commute, so it checks a box.

Anyway, give it a shot if you like LitRPGs. Here's the blurb for Book 1 from Amazon:

Quote:

It's not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil.

He'll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that's just on the first day. He's going to need courage, he's going to need wit, and he's going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he's going to need pants.

Any of y'all peruse the booktuber world? My sis is pretty big into the "book influencers " scene and has been trying to get me to pay attention for a while now. I'm a scifi fantasy nerd so a few of the bigger names I have seen are Petrik Leo, Daniel Greene, etc. Rex's for others?

Been peeking at a few others now and a couple seem solid. And if nothing else helps me learn the new stuff that comes out. I don't follow publishing houses directly so nice to have some recommendations/reviews of the latest and greatest. To even know they exist. My next read is Empire of Silence which came from them.

Also, where do yall mostly source your books? Buy direct from pub houses? Amazon? Bookstores? I'm trying to buy more and more direct from the authors which not many seem to do unfortunately. Just trying to put more of my dollars into their hands mostly.

Have also noticed that premium versions are becoming more and more popular. My wallet weeps since it seems like most of them are based in UK for now.

Been on a hell of a fantasy kick lately.

From an urban fantasy standpoint did the Ninth House and Hellbent by Leight Bardugo. Imagine if Skull and Bones and the othersecret societies at Yale are actually magic houses and a new student who is a **** up of the highest order is assigned to the house that is basically the Internal Affairs of magic at Yale. Unique book.

Read the first two of the Dresden Files and that is quite an enjoyment.

Done Sanderson's secret projects of course and with Audible I am about to listen to the White Sands Audio version of the graphic novel so that will be my last unread/listened to part of the cosmere.

4/5 of the way through the Blade Itself.

I'm surprised to actually be offering something new after years of these threads.

The Magelands books by Christopher Mitchell. Two entry points (two primary series): Magelands Epic (4 books) and Magelands Eternal Siege (16!).

Both are a ton of fun - cool magic and for eternal siege, dragons. Quick reads and dark enough to hold my interest. Mitchell also has zero hesitation to kill off characters which is always good. And Corthie is fantastic. But no real singular hero/heroine.

Available for free with Amazon Unlimited.

If you found enjoyment in Storm Front and Fool Moon... brotha... you have another thing coming. It's not even possible to explain to you how epic this series gets. Let's just say, the characters may be the best part of the Dresden files. And that's a series with an incredibly epic world that adapts just about every fantasy trope you have ever read about in such a unique way, has amazing story archs. and a fantastic magic system.

With a book series where the characters are the best part (both allies and enemies), you have only met a couple, and they are barely even decent characters, yet. Only about 25-30 more characters to meet.

The first two books in the series are both excellent and by far the worst in the series. If you're not listening to it, then there's a gift waiting on you, too, because Marsters is a genius narrator. I've listened to the whole series more times than u can count.

Anybody read anything written recently by Christopher Paolini. I am tempted to try his new Murtagh book, but I dont want to end up with something that still feels like it was written by like 17 year old Paolini or whatever.

Definitely enjoying Dresden. Fourth Wing is not bad. Found out there is a continuation trilogy (Gods of Blood and Powder) after the Powder Mage Trilogy. Really enjoying it, still have the 3rd book to read.

LitRPG isn't necessarily based on an RPG, but has a protagonist that follows a similar path as an RPG. Lots of 'do a thing/find a thing, get a powerup' where they go from 'farm kid' to 'crazy powerful' over the course of the story.

Finished Mistborn trilogy. As I mentioned before on this (or another thread) it started off slow for me, wasn't crazy about the sophomoric prose and magic system, but then it grew on me. By the time I finished Hero of Ages which I found to be the best book (and perhaps feeling very vested at that point) I was jazzed to jump into Mistborn Era 2. While Alloy of Law was a quick read, I found it very underwhelming. I did hear though that it is the weakest of all of the Mistborn books so moved on to Shadows of Self. I'm only a quarter of the way through it and find myself struggling to want to read it. Can't say why, but haven't connected with any of the characters (in fact I find them annoying) and the plot just isn't that interesting. Now my OCD will definitely force me to read all four books (and move on the Stormlight Archive), but sucks because the momentum it had gained after Hero of Ages just isn't there. Tell me I'm wrong and just my current frame of mind. So many books I want to read but want to get through these first.

I thought every one of the second era books is better than the one before. I don't think any of them are better than the original trilogy.

I would recommend reading secret history between three and four.

Books 3 and 4 of Era 2 series, or do you mean the overall series (between Era 1 and 2)?

Disregard, I looked it up. Cheers.

Yeah sorry book 3 and 4 of era 2.

Era 1 feels like lord of the rings, era 2 (the first books especiallly) feels like Wild Wild West. It's a pretty significant change, both in tone and setting.

At first, I was firmly in the era 1 camp, but era 2 grew on me with each book. As others said, it's a shift in tone and type of story. I'm also usually more into swords than guns, but I was into the story overall anyway.

Haven't read #4 yet though. Will read it after I'm done with Stormlight. I will say that I remember more about era 1, so I don't know if that means anything or not. Will probably need to read a synopsis of era 2 before diving back into book 4.

I put off reading Era 2 for a long time because I didn't think I would like it. After reading it, I found I enjoyed it much more than Era 1.
