His solo "An Evening with Jason Isbell" tour kicked off tonight here in Berlin and we were able to catch it. He played 5-6 songs from the new album, and I think just based on those we're all in for a real treat when it gets released.

I've been lucky to see him quite a bit, although never without the band, but that was hands down one of the best shows I've ever seen. I've always known he was a crazy talented guitar player, but that kind of acoustic setting just exemplifies his abilities in ways his concerts with the 400 Unit cannot. If you can get a chance to see him in the solo format during this tour I cannot recommend it enough.

My wife and I are going to fly up and see him at the Rhyman sometime. Love that place, and love Isbell.

I'm going to try to go to one near me next month. Never seen him solo, also always with the 400 unit.

Hoping to grab tickets closer to the show date, as right now the only good seats available on AXS are like $600 each.

The Ryman residency shows are great. I may try to get up there for one of the nights later this year.

PSA: Foxes in the Snow is out today.

It's not his best, but it's still some damn good Isbell. A couple of favorites:

Open and Close

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you as I haven't listen to it at all yet, but use caution when judging his new stuff after only a first few listens. I've initially not liked stuff within him, only to have what I didn't think was great ending up being what I now think of is some of his best stuff.

Lots of good stuff ... a man in transition. Some sad songs about the divorce - "Eileen", "Gravelweed" and "True Believer".

"Don't be Tough" reminds me of "Outfit" - sort of giving advice to his daughter perhaps?

And other songs that talk about his new relationship with Candian born, NYC artist. You'll hear references to Calgary, NY apartments and art.

Some favorite lines, from Gravelweed
Quote:

I was a gravelweed, and I needed you to raise me
I'm sorry the day came when I felt like I was raised
And now that I live to see my melodies betray me
I'm sorry the love songs all mean different things today
and True Believer
Quote:

All your girlfriends say I broke your ****ing heart, and I don't like it
There's a letter on the nightstand I don't think I'll ever read
Well, I finally found a match, and you kept daring me to strike it
And now I have to let it burn to let it be

Funny enough, Don't Be Tough gives me huge John Prine vibes. It's a great tune.

Just finished my first listen. As another poster said you always have to let his albums marinate. Initially, the lyrical approach seemed more straightforward and on the nose than usual but the second half really picked up. It could have just been it took time to adjust to the different solo sound.

I wasn't aware he had a girlfriend. At times the album almost sounds like he misses Amanda and at times like he's moved on. Definitely a man working through the emotions of a big life change.

"I said your skin was like water
And let you flow right through my hands"

Bars!!!

Already looking forward to another spin

I got the sense some songs were written right after/during the split and some months later. I agree there's definitely shifts in perspective in different songs.

Three full listens and it's vintage Isbell. Some of my favorites lines:

"The deepest ditches line the righteous path"

"Do you regret the things you should have said, or have you heard it all before?"

"I found the letter she wrote
Against the wall behind the bed
It said, "Forever is a dead man's joke"
And that's the only thing it said"

"I said your skins was like water and let you slip through my hands"

"I like her friends
The ones I know
They leave drops of blood like foxes in the snow
And all the beasts beneath her bed
She defeats and leaves for dead
And falls asleep inside my head
Seems so easy"

"For all the boys I could have been
All the fights I didn't win
They put me here against her skin
She can see me"

"You're like sleep, take what I can get
But I've gotta make some sense of this, so here the **** I sit
At 3 a.m., trying way too hard
To find the words to slow my sweet, addicted heart"

"You're like sleep, and the nights are adding up
Well, I wish I still smoked cigarettes and acted tough"

"Lot of dangerous memories, a lot of bars in this town
But oh, to have loved and lost and then still stuck around"

"Like the stain on your teeth, I'm as stubborn as wine
Just when you think that I'm beaten, I get up every time
So when we pass on the highway, I'll smile and I'll wave
And I'll always be a true believer, babe"

"I wasn't even fishing when I caught you,
but I always had your picture in my mind"

Coming into this album everyone wondered if he would address the divorce and I like that he's open and honest and tackling things head on. It seems like a muddied picture we may never know fact from fiction.

Between Gravelweed and Eileen he seems to take some ownership of mistakes and makes it seem like he's sorry for whatever happened.

"Open and Close" is very touching song about the vulnerability of being ready to move on and open to new love.

"Crimson And Clay" strikes me as almost a companion piece "Cast Iron Skillet". Whereas CIS addressed the dangers of growing up in a small town, CAC paints the picture of still loving and not being able to escape your home town, warts and all.

Along with Benzodiazepine and Hydrocodone, Diphenhydramine enters the triumphant of drugs names seamlessly weaved into songs.

Tracks 6-10 is a hell of a run of songs!

I also appreciate the detail Isbell puts in his vinyl releases. They come in a nice outer sleeve to reuse for storage, a nice rice paper inner sleeve as well, and the materials are always top notch.

By round 2, I started to like all the songs more, which is no surprise.

One thing that I hope changes with more listens is as much as Isbell is good at guitar, I feel his polished guitar playing and talent takes the tone of some of these songs to a different place, not sad and lonely enough. Some of the other notable "acoustic" albums have a more raw feel and tone, ie. Nebraska, Red Headed Stranger, Heartbreaker, etc that come to mind. The subject matter is tough, I think the songs might have more of an impact if they weren't so clean sounding. My thoughts after 2 spins, but Isbell is still awesome, and I'm glad this album came out when it did!

that was my immediate thought as well.

Outfit was advice from his dad, and this is advice to his daughter.

It's been on repeat in our household. My wife got a sneak peak un DC a few weeks ago. It doesn't disappoint.

Need a proper listen on the vinyl as we headed out of town when it arrived.

I'll be curious what he plays with the 400 Unit. Seeing them at ACL in April.
