It blows my mind you thought this was better than Eternals. To me this movie is the quintessential example of "CGI gobbledygook".

I can be more forgiving of CGI gobbledygook when the entire environment is artificial/a Dr. Seuss fever dream, and not something that can be filmed in the real world. It's when movies shoot in the real world, but still choose to fill it with CGI, that I start to check out.

Not to derail the thread, but it's funny you say that about Eternals when it's the MCU movie that actually went out of its way to shoot in actual exterior, real-world locations.

Granted there is a lot of CGI just like any Marvel movie. But to dock points for that seems odd to me.

thought the same thing...luckily we were running late and only caught the last 30 seconds of the SK trailer. it was enough to make me do a double-take to make sure we were in the right theater

Yeah, no where in all the multiverse is this even close to a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, I thought it was actually pretty decent, if not legitimately good at times. I doubt I ever watch it again, but at no time did I ever think, "I would have done that differently." I don't know that I would have made *this* the plot of the third Ant-Man movie, but given what we got, I have next to no complaints. If anything, it's better than most of Phase 4, better than three of the four Thor movies (even Love and Thunder, which I found so much more uninteresting than this), and better than The Incredible Hulk, Captain Marvel, and Eternals, along with probably a few others.
given how many people are legitimately upset that Michael Pena was not in this movie, that's honestly the only thing I would have done differently.

one of the ringer pods (maybe the midnight boys?) suggested that Luis should have walked into the room and also got sucked into the QR. i don't think that would have made a ton of sense, but hearing him explain to the other Ex-Con guys what the QR was like would have been incredibly entertaining.

the other thing i suggested earlier was to have a B story set in San Fran where Luis and the Ex-Con guys had to do something to help the rest.

again, i don't personally think it was needed, but it was a bold choice not to feature one of the most universally beloved bits of ant-man (or really any MCU movie).

Ha, I literally *just* listened to that episode on my drive this afternoon (and yeah it was Midnight Boys). In total agreement that it would have been such a great idea to include him in the quantum realm somehow. I get that they had to service enough characters as is, but it would have been worth it for the comedy alone.

As someone whose only encounter with MODOK was on Super Hero Squad, I really enjoyed the tie in. Character is cringey as a whole, so I thought it fit perfectly.

I just got back from seeing this. I had a great time, and thought it was the best MCU since Endgame. That may not be too much of a reach, notwithstanding perhaps No Way Home. I absolutely loved Kang and am curious what his forthcoming appearance(s) will look like. Might he show up in other MCU movies prior to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty?

MODOK was stupid, looked awful, and did take me out of the action when he was on-screen. I kept thinking, oh look, it's Humpty Dumpty.

Did not like Wasp's haircut (wink wink to an earlier thread topic) but damn she was still hot. Anyone with kids probably related to the brief interchange on the ship when both mom and dad were going back and forth about their "needs" during the 30 years mom was gone, and the look of horror on Hope's face.

Liked Cassie just fine.

Michelle Pfeiffer is still smoking hot. Michael Douglas in the early parts of the movie looked really old, and I loved his hesitation in sticking his hands into the controls on that ship, and then marching in with the ants toward the end.

My wife missed the movie out sick and I was telling her about it and she made a really interesting point that kinda seems like a plot hole. Scott was stuck in the QR for 5 years that seemed like 5 hours to him during the events of Infinity War/ End Game. If Janet was stuck there for 30 years, shouldn't it only have felt like 30 hours to her? Although Paul Rudd is seemingly ageless, Scott Lang shows no signs of having aged despite those 5 years going by, so why is Janet the age she would have been over time on Earth when she re-emerges?

I asked my boys this same exact question. Their answer was that Scott was in a different part of the Quantum Realm which is why time went by differently for him.

Take that for what it is.

That actually makes sense (relatively speaking). They made a point of saying that Janet went deeper/was in a different part that none of them had ever been to.

Still processing my thoughts but here's where I think they've settled:

  • Too many characters with not enough to do. I don't know that anyone had a real arc. I don't know that that would be solved by cutting anyone out (Hank or Hope, for example), but rather, it felt like they were more interested in telling a Kang story than an Ant-Fam story. The pieces were there for some kind of Scott/Cassie development, but I didn't really get it. Could have set up more for Wasp coming through at the end to save Scott, or Janet doing something to make things right against Kang, but... nope. No time.
  • Speaking of, I still thought they took too long to get to Kang. There's a lot of genericness in there between arriving in the Quantum Realm and getting all the Kang exposition/flashback. A lot of "we're traveling for hours but I can't explain anything at any point," intimidating locals arrive but it turns out we're old friends, chased by a monster but it gets killed by an even bigger monster, etc. Drink the ooze was funny though.
  • I think they're out of ideas with Ant-Man, especially in regards to the action. This was pretty much the same ol' same ol' - grow things, shrink things, shrink and punch, grow and stomp. Poor Wasp didn't have any new tricks up her sleeves.
  • MODOK was supposed to look awful and ridiculous and they succeeded. Very James Gunn, IMO. The little dangly legs, or seeing his little MODOK butt at one point. I thought it was pretty great. Ridiculous in a good way.
  • I liked Kang quite a bit but it takes me out of it when he disintegrates anyone he sees, but when it's the main characters, he uses concussive blasts instead.

I guess that's my main feeling - that something was missing at every point. Emotional beats and arcs should have been more impactful or thought-out. Action could have been more fresh and exciting. Things took too long to get there. Kang was menacing and unstoppable until they needed him to be stopped. They were maybe stranded in the QR until they weren't because here's another portal. Etc.

Guess it has me more excited for Loki 2 though. But IMO the biggest problem of Phase 4 (and now 5) has been the writing, and that's more or less the main problem here (plus "been there, done that" action).

I don't think we need an Ant-Man 4. Keep them around for team-ups, but this crew is out of ideas.

The connection between Scott and Cassie was where the movie really fell flat for me.

I would argue that Scott's reuniting with teenage Cassie in Endgame is the best moment not involving Steve and a certain hammer.

He finally gets her back and then seems to be spending very little time with her just a few years later - doesn't know she's working with Hank, doesn't know she's been arrested more than once. Calling her peanut a couple of times in the final battle doesn't make up for a lack of chemistry throughout the film. She even calls Scott out on what he's doing with his time since the defeat of Thanos. It's really unfaithful to Scott's character from the first 2 films and Endgame that spending as much time with Cassie as he could wouldn't be his #1 priority.

They should have at least written in a scene or 2 where he tries to do that and she's too busy for him. As someone who has never heard of Kathryn Newton before yesterday, it also really makes no sense why they wouldn't use the actress from Endgame in this movie. She's the right age and she was fantastic in that reunion scene. Plus it sounds like she found out from a news report that she was being replaced in the role, which really sucks.

I saw this as the narcism of celebrity having taken hold, as the filmmakers really made a point to underline that in the opening ten minutes. Thus, Scott wasn't paying as much attention to Cassie as he should have, despite having missed those five years. But then, the final five minutes were basically a repeat of the first ten, except this time Scott now had a better handle on his ego/being a celebrity, and we see him doing something *for* his daughter (buying her a cake) as opposed to, say, reading his own biography aloud in a bookstore for fans. Yes, they probably could have done a better job of underlining all that, and having Cassie pulling away or calling him out more in the beginning, but I at least got what they were going for, and it mostly worked for me.

Either way, that's the problem with doing what was essentially a FOURTH Ant-Man story (if you count Endgame, which featured him heavily)... you start having to invent drama that doesn't feel quite as organic as it did in the earlier movies, and having to invent new character arcs for arcs that already felt mostly complete.

This movie proves to me that the pendulum has swung to a place where its just the in thing to **** on MCU properties. There's no way this film is deserving of the RT% it has. Marvel has definitely been not as good since Endgame, but people are just being ridiculous with the hate now.

This film isn't perfect but I was very entertained. Also Johnathan Majors is ****ing awesome. Have yet to watch him in anything and be less than floored.

How many MCU movies up to Endgame still have rewatch value today? How many since?

I will still happily rewatch:
Ironman
Captain America
Avengers
Winter Soldier
Gotg
Age of Ultron
Civil War
Dr Strange
Spiderman Homecoming
Infinity War
Endgame

Post Endgame, the only ones I'll watch more than once so far.
Spiderman: Far From Home
Spiderman: No Way Home

I will rewatch most of what you list, although very rarely Age of Ultron, Dr Strange or any of the Spider-Man movies. GOTGVol2 will come up more often than any of those.

Since Endgame, I've rewatched Black Widow maybe twice, Shang-Chi once, Wakanda Forever once, Dr Strange 2 once, and both of the Spider-Man sequels once. Quantumania was the best MCU since Endgame IMO, and I'll probably rewatch it more often than any other post-Endgame film.

Saw it Saturday. Nowhere near as bad as the reviews say it was, but at the same time it still feels like we're waiting for the pieces of the puzzle to fall into place. I think Council of Kang has great potential to be an epic villain, but its the hero side I'm more worried about.

The original 3 phases had the A team lineup and without them its just not hitting quite right for me. I've actually enjoyed the movies that have come out since Endgame, but I'm not desperately following along like most of us did. All these films can be stand alone with no real building upon each other.

Only Thor and I guess Hulk are left from the original 6 and most of the new characters just don't have the same gravitas that the old ones did. I'm curious what it looks like when Kang Dynasty rolls around in 2 years.

With phase 4 done it looks like this in terms of heroes:

Involved prior to Endgame:
Thor
Hulk?
Captain America (Sam Wilson)
Winter Soldier
Spider-Man
Dr. Strange
Captain Marvel
GOTG (Starlord, Groot, Rocket, Drax, Mantis, Nebula, Gamora (I'm assuming after GOTG3)
Ant-Man & the Wasp

Introduced as a new Hero post Endgame from movies/film:
Shang Chi
The Eternals (Sersi, Phastos & Kingo are on Earth)/(Druig, Thena & Makarri are searching space for other Eternals)
Shuri as Black Panther

Young Characters introduced via TV/Film that could be a Young Avengers lineup (just realized this is an all female group):
America Chavez from Multiverse of Madness
Kate Bishop from Hawkeye
Kamala Khan from Ms. Marvel
Cassie Lang from Ant-Man
Riri Williams (Iron Heart from BP2)

Other Characters introduced:
Monica Rambeau in Wandavison (will be in The Marvels)
White Vision in Wandavision
John Walker as U.S. Agent
Dane Whitman from Eternals (Black Knight based on post credits scene/maybe shows up in Blade film)
Yelena Belova (Going to be part of Thunderbolts)
Moon Knight (no idea if he is set to be involved in anything going forward)
She-Hulk

Just seems like a lot of bloat without having the great arcing story right now.

Sadly, perhaps the one thing that has hurt the MCU the most is Chadwick Boseman dying. If you were going into an Avengers film headlines by Spiderman, Strange, and Boseman is a lot closer to Cap, Stark and Thor in allure.

Enjoyed the movie lots of great moments and some subpar ones. General question, not sure if it's worth its own thread or what the etiquette has been on the Entertainment board....

Is Kang the Conqueror from Quantumania the same as He Who Remains in Loki? I think they could be one in the same at different points time, or maybe two different variants both banished to the quantum realm.
