TV size, is it possible to be too big?

so, we are about to move into our new house (hopefully next week). when we sold our last house we left our previous TV's.

In the living room we will have a TV that fits into a pocket we made in the wall.

My question relates to a game room TV. I see that the TV's for sale now are up to 85 in. in the store it looks kind of awesome. However, I remember years ago seeing a 70 in TV at someone's house and thinking it was obnoxious. Now i'm considering going with the 85 in.

I guess before doing it, anyone ever thought their TV was too big?

The room is plenty big enough (the wall the TV is on is 26 feet long)

It's not really the size of the room, it's where are you generally sitting in relation to the TV? Maybe you can or can't rearrange things to make it work. A friend of mine had a 50" TV in his apartment living room and it was too big because of how close the couch was. We have a 65" in the living room and a 55" in the basement. The 55" is the nicer/newer TV but it makes way more sense in the basement due to the room size so the older but larger tv is in the living room. In the previous house it was the opposite, smaller living room and larger area in the basement.

I have a 75" in the living room but it looks very well proportioned because it's on a wall with custom shelving and 12' ceilings. And we are sitting about 10-12 feet away.

I would say anything that makes it difficult to take in the entire screen all at once is going to be too big.

good point.

a quick search gave a range of answers with most all falling between 12 and 14 feet.

If that is in the ballpark I guess this room would support that as it is 24 x 16

If this helps, here's my 85" Sony in a relatively normal size living room.

Wall is a little over 11 feet wide.

Console is 8 feet wide.

Couch (where I'm sitting) is about 12 feet away.

Granted, the picture makes it look smaller than in real life, but it's never felt obnoxious to me, and if I can afford it, I honestly might even go bigger next time...

That's the right answer...sort of. It used to be with standard def resolution you HAD to sit far enough away to not see individual pixels. HD made that mostly go away and 4k has made that completely irrelevant for the most part.

Now its mostly about how much field of view (FOV) / viewing angle you can get. And it's really hard to get too much FOV IMO.

I sit about 12' away from a 110" screen and I don't consider that "too big".

The THX recommended viewing angle is 36 degrees. That's actually pretty close to the 110" @ 12' I have.

They also list a max distance to resolve 1080 content (YMMV based on vision, etc.)

I like a 40 degree viewing angle which correlates with the max thx recommended angle. There's a million viewing distance calculators online which will allow you to calculate optimal tv size based on distance from the tv.

We did 85", but we have a long living room so it works. If you're sitting within 6 feet, then it would absolutely be too big.

Our only issues with it have been A) Console selection, and B) Streaming quality on sports. Until everyone is broadcasting in 4K, sports on that large a television isn't always going to look great.

My 110" is only 1080...not a problem. Granted I don't watch a lot of sports so I don't know how much is still in 720 vs 1080.

Just make sure you put it up very high so you have to strain your neck to see it. In fact with 12' ceilings, you should definitely mount it at the very top of the wall.

I sit about 10 feet away from my TV, and it is 82". I don't find it too big, at all. I would even consider larger, if it wasn't so outrageously pricey. I bought mine from a buddy who does commercial AV, and he sells to me at cost. Even so, I spent just over $3,000 for my Samsung 8K 82". The next size up increased the price by something crazy like $1,500.

No matter what size you get, don't cheap out on the audio. My Sonos Arc with the sub is massive in my overall enjoyment of my setup. Both for movies and gaming, it's a blast.

I'll add that I think the quality of the TV for the planned usage also comes in to play when you hit TV sizes this large. I sued to have a projector, but hated watching sports on it. I was going to just get a 85" tv that was on sale, but when I saw it in the store, it was just as bad as my projector with sports on. Fortunately I went to a friends house before making my purchase and like TCTTS he had a Sony which was crystal clear. So we ended up going Sony on ours, and it has made a world of difference when watching sports and playing games.

I bring this up, because most usually focus in on screen types (QLED, OLED, etc) for their purchase, but I think a lot of people forget to look at companies that have great image processing for upscaling, which is critical if you're watching sports.

So before you buy a set, really figure out what content you plan on watching (or gaming) on the set. Movies and native 4k content will probably look great on most 85" TVs, but if you want high end gaming, or fast moving lower resolution content (like sports) you probably are going to want to invest in something with better image processing quality. For movies my old projector that was tuned properly with a great screen was as good as any 4k TV I've watched, but TV content and especially sports was crap. So make sure you do the research on that side of the house too.
