Yeah. I agree. The miscarriage scene. Crucial to the plot and emotional situation. Indian school. Crucial. Naked chicks whipped with belts…nah. Seems a guy of Sheridan caliber could have developed a better scene to convey the character of Dalton.

During that scene, I said to my wife "why are they still there, just leave and go whoring somewhere else?", but she replied it shows his power, that they can't "Just leave". So I take those scenes to not only display his evil, but his power and what makes him a formidable foe to the Duttons. It could've been done other ways, but I'll accept s an explanation for the scenes and move on.

Their reason that they spent time with Timothy Dalton and the belt scene, is that he is going to get his comeuppance later in the series.

Think Bruce Willis and Ving Rhames "Pulp Fiction" ball in the mouth and bent over comeuppance.

They could do other things to show how powerful he is. This just made him seem demented. Controlling a couple of prostitutes such as that is really not a sign of power.

As far as those concerned with these scenes and it being a family show. First, I was not a fan of the scenes and thought they added no real value besides showing he's twisted. But all the scenes with Lady Rainwater the entire series would have not allowed me to let my kids watch. So this new graphic aspect was not a concern in that area for me.

1923 has been okay. I liked 1883 much better.

So far I have enjoyed the story between Spencer and Alexandra the most. Beyond that I like the Cara Dutton character as well.

The prostitute scenes are way overboard and last uncomfortably too long. I understand the plot line with the Indians but that's also been hard to watch. Catholics don't come out smelling like roses in this one

In 1923, it took five or six days to cross the Atlantic.

How many weeks will it take Spencer in Season 2?

I feel the same way.

"1883's" focus on a handful of characters made it possible to really get invested in the individuals. "1923" shifts around between the different storylines and as a result, I don't really care about any of them.

We know the Yellowstone survives into modern times so any historical battle for it isn't as interesting as HOW it came to be.

Plus, not his fault -- but Harrison Ford just can't carry a scene as well as Sam Elliott any more.

Taylor Sheridan would really benefit from some creative oversight.

I feel like when they were getting on the boat, they lamented they would be stuck with her ex for three weeks, because I remember thinking, "three weeks??? Are they traveling through 1700???"

But, I'm sure the ship is going to have to sink, he's going to get kidnapped by pirates, catch malaria, get stuck in a dust storm in the Great Plains, etc.

She will be hurt in a plane crash and he will deposit her in a cave and go for help…at which point he will be captured and delayed by the German army past her point of survival. As is custom, there will zero decomposition of the body.

On a serious note, though, I really don't know how I'm supposed to feel about Timothy Dalton's character.

Agreed about rather see Sam Elliott but at the same time the Elsa voiceover was unbearable. But this show has reminded me of how much I love Helen Mirren as an actress. I have a friend I work with now that worked on the set of 1883 and he refuses to watch the show haha. He's an Ag actually.

The last episode wasnt great and the show is wobbling a bit but i still like both 1883 and 1923 alot better than yellowstone and think theyre some of the better shows on these days.

Jumping back and forth isnt a problem at all in my mind. Both shows focus on the hardships of travel and life back then, but sheridan's stuff always seems to try shark jumping at some point along the way. Probably could have skipped the whole duel/separation thing.

That and some of the commercialization gets laughable - 'poor' indians riding around the plains eating hearts while wearing an entire santa fe gift shop.

Definitely agree.

Plus, as I've mentioned before, the subject matter of both is really unique in this era where Westerns are no longer part of popular culture.

A couple of reasons, one being he's not a fan of Taylor after working for him. Second, after seeing all of the production, he mostly knows everything that happened so there's not really any suspense. I'd personally be curious how it turned out but he's just not. He did say from 1883, Faith Hill is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Tim McGraw however is not. I asked if he ever tried to hit on Isabel May (Elsa) since he's in his young 20s as well but he didn't. At least he said he didn't.

I'd be real happy if Sheridan would set all this stuff to the side long enough to put out Sicario III.

I'm actually enjoying 1923 more. 1883 got a little silly for my taste with white girl riding in sleeveless Native American dress and acting tough.

For some reason this show reminds me of Game of Thrones.

**** ton of backstabbing happening in the motherland, and some dude is going through a ridiculous amount of trouble just trying to get back home.

I loved 1883 because it was a succinct story with a solid ending. I've watched it twice.

1923 seems more like cheap entertainment than quality story telling. Like Yellowstone, they will just keep adding seasons and new story lines until it fizzles out. I gave up on Yellowstone after season 4. I'll give 1923 one more season

Makes me appreciate Tim McGraw even more. Gruff old man married to a cool beauty and he works out at 430am.

Only issue I had was Ford saying, "I did it for the land". Ford setting himself up as an environmentalist and defender of the Earth against the evil corporations polluting the land and causing climate change was too much Hollywood moralizing for me.

I didn't mind the Indian school scenes, thought they were realistic. If you put people in power over people they see as lesser/savages, they're going to abuse their power and the people under them.

We are finally getting around to watching this series. Episodes 1 and 2 on Friday and 3/4 today. We will finish up over the next couple of days.

First thoughts are that this is the best of the Yellowstone shows so far. I agree with whomever said that they weren't happy about Elsa doing the voiceover; I was tempted to turn it off, but persevered, and glad we did. 1883 was pretty good until it went off the rails making her the central focus of the show.

Yes, the Catholic school scenes are tough to get through; I'm not surprised by Teonna's reaction and action.

Spencer is fantastic so far, and it was a very quick exit for the flirty English wife at the first campsite. The scenes in Africa are amazing, I don't care how much is CGI or real.

Helen Mirren is such an amazing actress. She carries every scene she is in, and can be very forceful. Harrison Ford is good, but mostly Harrison Ford.

So far, every Sheridan series has disappointed me. I want to like them at first, but they always end up disappointing me. This one too, more on that in a minute.

Yellowstone - This one had a great cast and setup, but was cartoonish from the first season. The second season was a little better, certainly with a satisfying ending. I've continued to watch mainly because Rip Wheeler kicks ass.

1883 - Loved the first two episodes of this. It lost me when Elsa Dutton turned into a Cheyenne warrior.

1923 - I had high hopes for this one. It held out the longest before disappointing me, but it still did. I liked the Spencer subplot in Africa at the beginning, but it too became cartoonish with Spencer and Alex facing one calamity after another. I initially thought it jumped the shark when the tugboat capsized. But no, that had to wait for actual...sharks. I still have enough interest in the other plot lines that I will watch season 2.

Finally got around to watching this series and am on the same page as you. I was drawn into all of the subplots right away and loved the Spencer chasing his demons before arriving to save the family. When Mirren's character tells Creighton she can't wait for him to meet her nephew causing him to pause it was one of the best scenes. The season wrap though was a huge disappointment. The tossing the Duke over the ship's rail into the ocean was very close to jumping the shark for me and I can't believe they ended the season without Spencer actually getting to Montana. They should at least have a scene of him standing in the porch of the Yellowstone house before fading away, now we have to wonder if he spends most of the upcoming final season going through every kind of disaster imaginable like robbers detail his train in the way to Montana and he ends up fighting Comanches or something.

Good watch but could have been great. I definitely see shades of Legends of the Fall and Africa Queen in this show.

The graphic scenes from the Indian school, I get. Those made sense within the story line. The naked girls are gratuitous. Timothy Dalton is mean. We get it. These scenes serve zero purpose.

It's not about him being mean though. It's about him getting off on power and getting off by others using their power. That was literally the entire point he explained to girl. And why he really enjoyed when they switched because the brunette took full control of her power.

Wife and I just finished the season and can't wait for the next. Reading through this thread I'd really be interested to see what you guys DO enjoy watching for entertainment.

I am intrigued to see what the family tree becomes, I don't think we know where the link is to Costner yet. Could be Jack or could be elsewhere. I really like how TS writes strong female characters without making them "women's empowerment leftists" it's very refreshing when every show wants a female lead with only one model. I think the tax issue will be solved by Spencer and Alex arriving and using her inheritance/wealth.
