Just started watching this because I am a huge Evan Peters fan. The first episode is definitely attention grabbing, but not because there's super disgusting or shocking stuff on screen, but more creepy and thriller-esque.

Finished the entire 10-episode series yesterday and really enjoyed it. Probably one of the better serial killer docuseries, although it wasn't a true documentary. Show prompted me to go down the internet rabbit hole and then I had trouble sleeping.

  • I thought it painted a slightly sympathetic view towards Dahmer, specifically his childhood.
  • Never knew he attended (briefly) Ohio State. He seemed intelligent but did very poorly in school.
  • I was glad that they went into the background of the victims, vicims' families, and the neighbors.
  • The two officers that turned over the 14-year old to Dahmer should have been fired. Today they probably would be sued by the family.
  • He was absolutely disturbed and one sick/twisted individual.

Binged this last week when it was released.

They took lots of liberties but what just amazes me was the main actors ability to do a freaking PERFECT Dahmer impression. That Wisconsin accent and speech patterns were on point. I'm guessing he studied his jail house interviews over and over because he absolutely sounded just like him.

Edited to correct grammar.

I found this. He basically didn't know anything about him. Agree that he did a fantastic job.

I watched a prior documentary on this guy, but this story filled in a lot of holes. I liked how the Grandmother and Father knew (should have known) but turned a blind eye. At least that was my read here.

Also shocked but not shocked at the same time by the police failures. Seems like every serial killer story has massive police failures throughout.

The landlord needed to do a health and welfare on that apartment. Too many people ignored it.

Take a lot of the series with a grain of salt. They took quite a few liberties. The next door neighbor? That lady didn't even live in the same building, much less next door to Dahmer.

This is hilarious. I had a similar thought watching the show. When Jeff kept getting his ass chewed progressively worse by his dad as failure after failure mounted, I wanted the dad to give the "but that's not really what he said….,told me to grow up and quit being an effing dinosaur" speech from Step Brothers.

It was really good. Evan Peters best role. And Richard Jenkins is a very underrated actor. Molly Ringwald added nothing. Did you realize the grandmother was the mom on The Waltons?

It occurs to me that Dahmer was really America's last great serial killer. Now days, killers are too lazy. They just get a gun and go shoot up a school. No one puts pride in their work anymore. Hopefully whenever a school shooter makes their way down to hell, Dahmer is there to welcome them and then spend the rest of eternity showing them first hand the proper way to be a serial killer.

As macabre as it is, I had the same thought. Serial killers used to be the threat in the 70s/80s but now it's mass shootings.

There was that guy in Cleveland about 10-15 years ago that hid all the bodies of his victims in his basement. Someone like Dahmer isn't going to do a mass shooting, I'm sure another one will be along at some point, or is active now and we don't realize it.

Watched the first 3 last night. The first scene with the guy who manages to escape had tension on par with the opening scene of Inglorious Basterds. Incredibly fascinating that Dahmer was so numb to it he made no attempts to flee or clean up or anything after the guy escaped.

A shame they had to alter Demolition Man after Dahmer got killed in prison.

Serial killers aren't a thing anymore because technology, surveillance and forensics have come so far that these people can't just make others disappear anymore like they used to. Every single person has a GPS and camera on them at all times now. A significant number of homes have video surveillance. Businesses have more and better cameras. Police are much more inclined to active investigate things these days. These kind of killers just can't get away with dozens of murders like they used to. They get caught after one or two and before they really get to the dahmer/gacy etc level. There is also much more available online that probably helps feed their addiction/desires thst stops them from getting to that level.

On the other hand, there are probably several inner city criminals who have killed several people that are still walking around free. Do we consider gang members who have several bodies underneath them serial killers?

I'm not sure how much more of this I'm going to watch. I'm through Episode 4 and it's just creepy, disgusting and ultimately so sad.

This last episode brings up some excellent points about how he was able to do this for as long as he did without getting caught. Lack of scrutiny by the authorities in the gay community and black community just allowed him to operate freely as a predator for 4 years. I was a teenager when this came to light but I had forgotten the justifiable outrage in those communities at the Milwaukee PD.

Poor deaf guy...that episode was a gut punch.

Forgetting for a moment that he had already killed a bunch of people and knowing how it all turns out...I actually thought it was nice scene when his parents visited his cleaned up apartment. Like "Alright! He's turning things around!" as if he was a recovering drug addict or something. Maybe I just wanted to see his Dad not be miserable for a few fleeting moments.

Still have a few episodes to go.

It's also interesting that Jeff is talking to Lionel in prison and tries to say maybe the reason he's like that is because his dad taught him taxidermy as a child with roadkill. Lionel immediately recoils to the suggestion that he didn't have anything to do with it...

But knowing now what we do, that people that turn into serial killers are likely to have abused, tortured, maimed, and killed animals, kind of noteworthy.

I know it's not exactly the same as taxidermy with already dead animals, but it makes you think about if thay awoken anything in him.

In all, I feel bad for his father.

I think the cannibalism shoots him to the top of peoples minds and makes us think that way, but Samuel Little killed way more and was mostly after Dahmer. Same with the Green River Killer who was almost a decade later. Heck, BTK wasn't captured until 2005 although he was done with his killings prior to Dahmer.

The homosexual aspects at the time, combined with the gruesomeness of the stories about what went on with him skews some of our perspectives when comparing him to others that came along later

I knew she was supposed to be in it, but after I finished watching it I wondered why she was credited and not in it. Then I checked IMDB and my mind was blown.

I knew a lot of the basics of the Dahmer case, but this brought a whole new level of detail I never imagined. I just thought he was bringing dudes home to have sex and then he killed them. I never knew any of the stuff about how he was trying to lobotomize them to basically turn them into zombies he could have his way with at will.

I think the homosexual aspect worked in Dahmer's favor when seeking black victims because the DL culture kept some of his victims from being honest about where they were going and why, so when they disappeared the connection wasn't made and police did not know to go searching for leads at gay bars and bath houses. Some of the victims' families found out only because they were Dahmer victims.

Richard Jenkins is a fantastic actor as is the guy who played Dahmer. Overall I think it's a great series. It was bit to disturbing in spots. I have to do some fast forwarding.

Probably gives the most amount of screen time to victims and victims families as anything I've seen in the genre.

I'm on episode four, and this has by far been the best show or series to get to you to understand how/why this person became a serial killer. Really well done. Great performances by Jenkins and Peters.

This is by design. From what I've read, Murphy's goal was to specifically avoid telling the story from Dahmer's point of view because he didn't want to be accused of trying to create sympathy for Dahmer. However, he also chose not to consult with any of the victims' families, and he'll probably end up getting sued as a result.

There's a possible serial killer currently in Stockton, CA. Pretty crazy to read about. Even with all the surveillance, they still have no clue who he is. Up to 6 murders now.

Am I the only one who had never heard of Dean Corll?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Corll

One of the biggest serial killers, with 28 victims, and from Houston.

I'm very surprised this isn't a bigger "name" among the best known serial killers, and especially that being from Texas I'd never heard of him. Kinda crazy.
