My wife and I are watching the Dahmer tapes (also on Netflix), and all the interviewees talk about how wonderful Jeff's dad was/is. They didn't mention anything about helping Jeffery dissect roadkill or anything. That seems like a really important detail to leave out if it's true

So sure enough, I looked that up and it never happened. His dad had no idea he was doing anything with animals until after he was arrested.

Why in the hell would the show put that in? That makes the dad look like a freak for no good reason.

It occurs to me that Dahmer was really America's last great serial killer. Now days, killers are too lazy. They just get a gun and go shoot up a school. No one puts pride in their work anymore. Hopefully whenever a school shooter makes their way down to hell, Dahmer is there to welcome them and then spend the rest of eternity showing them first hand the proper way to be a serial killer.

Last great fascinating one, maybe, but I wouldn't say he was a "great" serial killer. It's insane how impulsive and careless he was, and even more insane to get away with it for 13 years being that *whatever* about everything. Dude was begging to get caught because he didn't really consider that what he was doing was wrong.

Wild.

One that just got busted a year or two ago in Frisco:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/oct/08/texas-serial-killer-elderly-texas-billy-chemirmir

Quote:

Chemirmir was convicted of capital murder this week for the second time in Dallas county, and was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the death of Mary Brooks, an 88-year-old woman who was found dead in January 2018.

He is accused of smothering at least two dozen elderly women in north Texas, which places him among the deadliest serial killers in the history of Texas and the United States.

Chemirmir says he is innocent of all the crimes he's accused of. He told the Dallas Morning News earlier this year that he would never go to prison. He was convicted and began serving a life sentence several weeks later.

Those two police never got a that award either. That and the scene showing the police calling Sinthasomphone Sr. was out of line. I can't find any evidence that that ever happened.

I'm trying to teach my kids, always remember who the story teller is. When watching a documentary or in this case a docudrama, know they are only telling you one side and most have an agenda. If you have questions or doubts that aren't addressed, go research and find out for yourselves.

The emphasis on racism, homophobia, bad cops etc. was so overdone it made me google to find out who was behind this film. Don't get me wrong I'm sure some of or all of those had some impact in this case during those times but the blatant addition of things that did not actually happen had an "activist" feel.

Which made sense when I found this tweet by the producer:

Several others have pointed out falsehoods regarding the cops. Another dramatization was how the judge behaved towards the Laotian family in court (making the brother speak because the old white man couldn't understand the dad's English and then interrupting them). According to Everything Dahmer got Wrong the family wasn't even in court that day.

Overall, I enjoyed the show but like so many other Netflix specials you have to be aware of the "programming".

I've got one episode left. Overall, I think it's very well done.

That said, I went in knowing that the creators would take some literary license here and there, some details would not be accurate, there would be some dramatization that doesn't match the facts, etc.

Random thoughts/observations/questions:

  • I, too, was stunned when I learned that Lionel's second wife is played by Molly Ringwald. Wow.
  • Is the crank-calling by the Milwaukee police officers just completely made up?
  • I'm surprised the show didn't include more scenes/interaction with Dahmer's younger brother.
  • I realize that prevailing attitudes at the time (gay community, race relations, AIDS) shaped some of the Milwaukee PD's actions, but damn...at some point you gotta do your job.
  • Dahmer is a really tough character to play. Very ambitious for any actor to attempt that. Hats off to Evan Peters for a really good performance.

Finished the show the other day. Peters is a very good actor.
