Just getting home from Kokefest. It's a 2 day red dirt festival each year in Hutto outside of Austin.

REK was the second to last band tonight - just ahead of the Turnpike Troubadours to close it out.

Wow, what a joke. As a preface, I saw him about a year ago at Nutty Brown (RIP) and he was awesome.

Tonight - he sat down the entire time. Sunglasses were on (for a 9pm set start time). He was hollering at his stagehand (mic muted ofc but you could get the gist). The festival threw some beach balls into the crowd and REK seemed pissed the crowd was having fun knocking the balls around. I honestly wonder if he was hammered, or high on something.

And then - his final F you to the crowd - he did not play the Road Goes on Forever.

Turnpike came on shortly thereafter and it was fantastic but wow - what a turd in the punch bowl REK was for one of his "last" shows before his "retirement".

As a REK fan, tonight was just sad and disappointing. Stick a fork in him, he's ****ed up and done.

ETA: you may be asking, "ok, what was the point of this thread then?" The point is, if you're trying to figure out how to see REK before he "stops touring", don't bother.

Sorry to hear that. My stepson and his wife saw him at the Tobin just one night earlier and said it was a great show. Randy Rogers opened for him.

He was great in FW earlier this year. From all reports its very hit or miss (with more hits than misses).

Which I guess makes sense that this is his final "official" go-round. The guy is tired of touring.

Isn't REK pretty well known to be drunk at most of his concerts? I've never seen him but I've heard from more than one person this is generally the case.

It happens. Everybody has bad nights. I've seen some of my favorite artists at their worst too.

I saw him many years ago at Gruene Hall. He was so drunk, the show was pointless.

I saw him play multiple times at the hall, and a few Christmas shows at moody theater. Last night was pretty piss poor considering last tour and all. At first I thought he was drunk, but the way he hopped up and casually walked off at the end made him seem relatively sober. My impression was he was just pissed to be there.

We saw him at the Galveston County Fair in April and it was a pretty solid show. Sucks that it was apparently a bad night. We're going to see him again at Cynthia Woods in a few weeks with Hayes Carll opening. Couldn't pass that one up.

I have tix at Floore's to his last show ever (allegedly).
I would consider myself a VERY casual fan (I've only seen him a couple of times). That stated, I'm gonna be half pissed, half laughing my ass off if he craps the bed that night.

Used to watch him at A&M back in the day and he could be a real turd.

Based on how last night was going, I was expecting him to flip us the bird before he went backstage.

Would be hilarious if at his "last show ever" he craps the bed as you state and the last thing he does is give the crowd at Floores the finger. "I'm going home, you *******s"

I assume he'll be in good spirits for the Floores' shows. Supposedly, they are being recorded. I'll be at the Thursday night show.

We went to his 4th of July performance in Kerrville. For a free, not late night show, I thought it was good enough. But I'd never seen him before (which is why I made a point to go to this performance).
I can't compare to other performances.

I live in Helotes and would like to go to one of
The final shows, but those tickets were out of my price range as a casual fan.

But he did play all of his big songs I do know, and a few I don't.

Been a fan since 94. I have lost count to the number of shows I have seen. Most of the shows have been awesome. With that being said, saw him at Whitewater on this last leg. I would probably rank that show as the worst REK show I have ever been to. Going by that, I would say it is time to hang it up. So many better acts out there right now.

By the way, I have never met him, but my wife did. Based on their 30 second interaction, she thinks he is a jerk.
....Rememberin' the fallin' down and the laughter and the curse of luck from all those sonsabitches that said we'd never get back up!! (REK)

His shows a couple weeks ago in VA were good ones as well. Yes he sat and had sunglasses on the entire time, but had great audience interaction and was a lot of fun. Someone probably ticked him off before he took the stage and he took it out on the audience. Or he was hot and just flat didn't want to be there, in which case he shouldn't have done the show.

This legit made me lol.

Sad to hear. I posted in the other REK thread that I saw him in Waco a month ago and he opened with "Front Porch Song" by himself and told the greatest 5 minute rambling story I'd ever seen him tell but the rest of the show and in particular the last 20 minutes he was faltering big time.

I'm still going to go see him the night before the season opener outside of Kyle Field and hope for a better show as I assume it will be the last time I ever see him. Sucks it's at the exact same time as the Burgess Banquet with the greatest class ever getting inducted.

Had some friends see him a few weeks ago. Big fans. They legit left before his set was done. Said it was insufferable.

even worse, as he is a HUGE Dem supporter and fundraiser, he could have brought Beto out to dunk on the crowd.

It will likely be eleventy-hundred degrees. Can't imagine that will put him in a good mood.

I agree 100%. Took my 17 year old son to see him in San Antonio on Friday. He was so excited. So for his one and only chance no Road goes on Forever and no Front Porch Song either. I went to the Fort Worth Show and he was incredible.

Man I've seen REK many times but trying to do this in your 60's has got to be difficult. He's playing A LOT right now. This era of country singers is always hit or miss. I've seen bad shows from everyone over the years. Pat Green used to be the worst. Stoney had some shows where you were wondering wtf you paid for it.

I'm not gonna knock him for sitting down but I did think it was bad taste to not play your most popular songs. Either way, it was nice to hear some of his songs leading up to Turnpike (the actual reason I bought tickets).

I'll share my REK story.

I was ~17 back in 2002, and he was drunk at his concert somewhere in Houston and everyone sang his own songs to him and they loved it. I was like "WTF is this *****"

Better than JJW's habit of stopping in the middle of a song and telling the crowd to STFU back in the day when they were getting to loud for him, talk about a ******.

Saw him do this EXACT thing at Floore's in about '98. Some college kids were there and started chanting "Pissin' in the wind! Pissin' in the wind!" Finally JJW stopped the show, looked over at them, and said "Hey y'all shut the hell up! This ain't an fking football game god dammit!!!".

I mean they were being a little obnoxious but it really soured my opinion of him. I mean, what an ass-ole!!
