Trainwreck: Woodstock '99 on Netflix.

This was the summer between my sophomore and junior years in high school, so I vaguely remember hearing about it.

This docuseries is amazing. My jaw has been hanging open for an hour and a half.

Riots, mayhem, arson, destruction of property, sexual assault.

I remember Fred Durst literally crowdsurfing on a piece of mdf wood that was torn from the stage.

I remember watching it on MTV.

Bunch of us in high school made a half-assed attempt to go to that. Good thing it didn't work out. I'm not sure any of us would have made it back alive.

The only thing eye opening or memorable about that 2021 HBO documentary was how hard a 2021 revisionist history viewpoint could twist the screws on the Woodstock '99 performance by DMX. Everything they said about it would have been ridiculed as total horse**** in 1999.

It's three episodes: one for each day of the festival. There are interviews with people from different aspects of the organization and implementation, as well as a few festival-goers.

Basically - it was an enormous dumpster fire. The crowd was unruly, they were surprised they had to pay for food, they were sexually aggressive, and the organizers didn't realize they were booking hardcore rock groups.

The organizers were shocked that kids in 99 were different than those of 69. They didn't want police-type security; but a Peace Patrol made of random people. That didn't work well.

Chaos ensues.

Oh! One woman got "trench mouth" from drinking feces-infected water.

That was interesting.

Port o johns overflowed and/or pushed over. Masses of mud holes, people came by later and played in the mud if I remember the series I watched. Plenty of other debauchery.

I cant believe the promoters allowed candles to be distributed on the last night. Of all the moronic decisions, that was the stupidest.

I like how the one guy was like, "hey - this is REALLY BAD IDEA" and they just told him to get off the line.

Getting a photo-op for protesting gun violence was so much more important.

Woodstock '94 felt much more pure and true to the spirit of the original. Woodstock '99 ALWAYS felt like a gimmicky cash grab from the moment it was announced.

Lol. Looking forward to this one. I watched the HBO Max one and had to roll my eyes at the talking heads trying to apply their revisionist history.

Half way through the first episode and have so many thoughts already that I will get to later after I finish it but this one "journalist", David Blaustein, blames the "psychology" of all the "toxic white frat boys" that attended the festival on their love of movies like "Fight Club".

Which is a really odd statement considering this event took place in late July of 1999 and one of the greatest films of all time wasn't even released until October later that year.

Episode 1 is titled "How the **** Did This Happen?". My question is, who the **** produced this thing and how could this guy be considered a journalist when he can't even get basic history and timelines correct?

To anyone that has seen both how does the Netflix documentary compare to the one from HBO?

Oddly enough Woodstock '94 and '99 were two shows that Metallica had to follow iconic performances and they didn't measure up afterward. In '94 they had to follow the NIN mud performance, which is just iconic. In '99 they had to follow Rage Against The Machine, who played after the Limp Bizkit all hell breaking loose set. The Rage performance is also just incredible, watch the set, so much energy from the crowd but a very different energy from LB just before.

Agreed. "Hey, guys, we made it! After the Chili Peppers' set, it's all over... Why don't we give this uncontrollable crowd some fire to close the festival? I mean, what could possibly go wrong?!"
Idiots.

I saw Kid Rock live back in 99 or 2000. It remains one of the most impressive shows I've ever seen. I was not a fan back then (went because he was playing with Metallica), nor am I fan now, but there is no doubt he's an immensely talented musician. I was completely shocked by the range of songs he chose to play. He played his rap rock stuff, classic rock, country, pop, classical (just him on piano), etc. Dude is a talent, he just chose to go in a musical direction that sucks.

Lol. That's been tried in cities in the current era of idiocracy and has failed miserably there as well. Who would have thunk it?

Not sure if you've been paying attention to the last...mmmm..decade, but journalists are entitled, useless ******s -- AT BEST -- for the most part.

At worst, they are knowingly lying to people and have no problems with it.
