I guess I just find realistic evil cartel dudes scarier than the Salamancas. Just seemed way over the top/cartoonish in an otherwise pretty realistic show.

It's getting kind of weird how much you're bringing this up.Quote:

Justified - Michael Rappaport
This is it for me. I actually like Justified more than Breaking Bad, but he damn near ruined everything.
I originally thought exactly like you did. Then I saw The Bridge on FX and that changed my mind.Teacher_Ag said:
Fair enough. I wish they'd gone a realistic route. People don't walk around/behave like that, just pure Hollywood. If they'd done the other characters that gimmicky and over the top Hank would have been Walker New Mexico Ranger.
If I had to guess, I would say it's a combination of having seen them before and knowing not only their fate, but the fates of most everyone they interact with. You know that, for example, Gus and Mike are going to be alive at the end of the series because they need to fulfill their respective roles in BB. BCS has been fantastic, but there is still that lingering prequel problem with some of the characters that really takes some of the drama out of it.aTmAg said:I originally thought exactly like you did. I went into that show thinking that I would appreciate the realism. But it was simply too dark and not enjoyable at all. When they cancelled it, I was actually glad. What is strange is that I really liked the Narcos series. but that is more because it was about real people and was semi-historical.
Then on a rewatch of BB, I realized that the twins accomplish the writers' goals perfectly, and I appreciated them a lot more.
HOWEVER, on Better Call Saul the twins (and the cartels in general) aren't scary at all to me. I can't put my finger on why.

Why couldn't such a bad arse like Jack Bauer have his daughter learn some martial arts and self defense?
It riled me up every time

Wife and I did that verbatim. Great take.TexAg2001 said:I've binged BB all the way through twice. On the first viewing, I absolutely hated Skyler and was in Walt's camp for the entire show. Upon the second viewing, my mindset completely changed and I pretty much agreed with everything Skyler did and was rooting for Walt's downfall. For me, the show had a completely different, but still enjoyable, feel to it the 2nd time around. Genius writing.....Ulrich said:
Skyler White isn't wrong in the end, Walt turns out to be a monster. As a viewer though, when you meet Skylar she's flipping out over every little thing the protagonist does. The protagonist is struggling with a terminal cancer diagnosis, to all appearances is a kind of bumbling but well-intentioned normal guy, and he's played by an actor who has been most recognizable as the lovable loser at that point in his career. She comes off as terribly unfair, and that colors perception throughout the series, especially for first time watchers.
If the series started in season two or three, I bet people would view her a lot differently. Conversely, one can imagine a scenario where Skylar knows a lot more about Walt than we do and already has good reason to be suspicious and angry, but we the viewer just don't know it yet.

Billy Eichner; Parks & Rec. "Look at me...I'm a gay, Jewish guy that yells." The show was on such a roll, and this dude added nothing.
sorry i didn't refer to ozark or BB.
That is because they are the best "minor" characters. An L of an Ag said:
Can't believe that 2 pages in no one has mentioned John Ralphio and Mona Lisa from Parks & Rec.
Depends on who they casted...who ever thought 4'10" out of shape Joe Pesci could be so terrifying in mob movies?aTmAg said:Here's the thing. In real life, this tub of lard:Teacher_Ag said:

Now if this POS was shown in breaking bad, would you be scared? I sure as hell would not be. I would think, "what is that fat ass going to do to anybody?" To make us scared of him, they would have to dedicate story timeline show the depraved things he did. Do we really want to see that shown with realism? Hell no.
