I guess I just find realistic evil cartel dudes scarier than the Salamancas. Just seemed way over the top/cartoonish in an otherwise pretty realistic show.

Here's the thing. In real life, this tub of lard:

Tortured, killed, and dismembered a 6 year old girl in front of per parents while laughing. Then did the same thing with the wife, and the father. All because he wanted to punish the father. Now if this POS was shown in breaking bad, would you be scared? I sure as hell would not be. I would think, "what is that fat ass going to do to anybody?" To make us scared of him, they would have to dedicate story timeline show the depraved things he did. Do we really want to see that shown with realism? Hell no.

Again, when a show tried to get more realistic with cartels, it lasted 2 seasons. And it was tame compared to what cartels really do. Hell, Narco's Mexico had to sugar coat it and end the show out of fear that getting too current getting producers and actors killed.

BB, instead, chose the twins. They made them over the top intentionally. Like a couple of terminators who kill people without thinking twice. And by doing so, they waste ZERO minutes of backstory to convince us they are bad. Every death they show was part of the BB story. I think it was perfectly done.

It's getting kind of weird how much you're bringing this up.

Justified - Michael Rappaport

This is it for me. I actually like Justified more than Breaking Bad, but he damn near ruined everything.
Probably not so much a bad character, just a bad actor.

Fair point

Fair enough. I wish they'd gone a realistic route. People don't walk around/behave like that, just pure Hollywood. If they'd done the other characters that gimmicky and over the top Hank would have been Walker New Mexico Ranger.

I originally thought exactly like you did. Then I saw The Bridge on FX and that changed my mind.

I went into that show thinking that I would appreciate the realism. But it was simply too dark and not enjoyable at all. When they cancelled it, I was actually glad. What is strange is that I really liked the Narcos series. but that is more because it was about real people and was semi-historical.

Then on a rewatch of BB, I realized that the twins accomplish the writers' goals perfectly, and I appreciated them a lot more.

HOWEVER, on Better Call Saul the twins (and the cartels in general) aren't scary at all to me. I can't put my finger on why.

Being from a small, shady town that actually had legit cartel associates here and there I really did have a fear of them. If they'd captured that with the Salamancas it would have made the series a lot stronger. I'm not saying they needed to make their depictions of violence more graphic, just make them believable character who really are cruel and evil...which they are in real life, obviously.

If I had to guess, I would say it's a combination of having seen them before and knowing not only their fate, but the fates of most everyone they interact with. You know that, for example, Gus and Mike are going to be alive at the end of the series because they need to fulfill their respective roles in BB. BCS has been fantastic, but there is still that lingering prequel problem with some of the characters that really takes some of the drama out of it.

Nikki and Paulo on "Lost". The show lost a lot if its goodness in the last season, but at the the time they were introduced it was still 'cool', IMO.

What would that do against mountain lions, though? Such lazy writing. After the mountain lion episode, I had a feeling that quicksand and amnesia would come up that season.

I'm (super) late to this show and only in the middle of season 2 but she is the absolute worst. Wondering if I should skip ahead to another season or something.

Skyler White isn't wrong in the end, Walt turns out to be a monster. As a viewer though, when you meet Skylar she's flipping out over every little thing the protagonist does. The protagonist is struggling with a terminal cancer diagnosis, to all appearances is a kind of bumbling but well-intentioned normal guy, and he's played by an actor who has been most recognizable as the lovable loser at that point in his career. She comes off as terribly unfair, and that colors perception throughout the series, especially for first time watchers.

If the series started in season two or three, I bet people would view her a lot differently. Conversely, one can imagine a scenario where Skylar knows a lot more about Walt than we do and already has good reason to be suspicious and angry, but we the viewer just don't know it yet.

I've binged BB all the way through twice. On the first viewing, I absolutely hated Skyler and was in Walt's camp for the entire show. Upon the second viewing, my mindset completely changed and I pretty much agreed with everything Skyler did and was rooting for Walt's downfall. For me, the show had a completely different, but still enjoyable, feel to it the 2nd time around. Genius writing.....
Wife and I did that verbatim. Great take.
