A surprisingly decent list. I agree with their #1 but think anything with Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan is grossly overrated. Also think Moonstruck and Say Anything should be higher.

Hot take from a middle-aged dude: I actually miss a good rom-com.

Love Actually should be in the top 5. Cutting Edge and High Fidelity should also be higher on the list

List doesn't go very far back (think Harold and Maude was the oldest at 1971?). Weird to have a list like this without, say, The Philadelphia Story, Bringing Up Baby, or any of the ones Billy Wilder did in the 50s and 60s

Crazy, Stupid, Love should be higher too

Yeah it seems like a modern list, or from someone with no older movie history.
I would agree on say anything, (might be the best pure movie ok there) but it's not really a comedy; not sure it should be on the list at all. It's more in the coming of age drama genre.

I usually don't watch those but my favorite barely made it at #50 500 days of summer

And I really liked Midnight in Paris? Not on there? Am I too gay for liking that movie?

While I don't quite the movie that often, I do reference it quite a bit.

A friend of mine found out his wife was cheating on him:"At least you knew before Mr Zero"

The line about going to an Ethiopian restaurant. White mans overbite.

When Harry Met Sally is a top 10 movie for me, so happy to see it at #1.

Interesting list, and really like many of them. Very few movies on the list I would consider "chick flicks", and would agree they are more "romantic comedies".

500 Days of Summer is way too low, for me.

I would argue that the vast majority of quality comedies are generally also romantic comedies. Isn't the "Classic Comedy" a story that generally ended in a wedding?

Agree on both counts. I remember really enjoying Midnight in Paris when I first saw it.

The Wedding Singer should be number 1.

I haven't seen many of those but There's Something About Mary has to be the funniest on the list. And I don't see how any of those could be better movies than Groundhog Day.

Also, how is "romantic comedy" defined? I never considered Jerry Maguire a romantic comedy.
Let's go, Brandon!

  • The Philadelphia Story
  • Bringing Up Baby
  • His Girl Friday
  • It Happened One Night
  • The Lady Eve
  • Born Yesterday

Love Actually is pretty great.

My only complaint is I felt like they coulda kept that porn storyline out of it. Pretty much prevents it from ever being a family movie at Christmas time.

No Brat Pack movies from the 80's?

My personal favorite not on the list, As Good As It Gets.

Also 10 Things is way too low. A Knights Tale was another great Heath Ledger one as well

You and my wife have very similar taste in movies. She loves Leslie Mann.

"What? No! It's not even dark yet!"

One of her favorite lines in any movie ever.

It Happened One Night might be the original rom-com. It had real star power, genuine comedy and with plenty of sexual innuendo that was allowed before the censors became too strict. You will never think of the walls of Jericho the same after watching this movie

Edit- and it still has influence today. The recent Nissan TV commercial of the runaway bride was lifted straight from that movie

Adding to jk's list

Roman Holiday is quite funny especially the fight scene on the riverboat.

City Lights might have the most memorable and crushing final scene when Charlie Chaplin's flower wilts

Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet in A Lot Like Love.

Just a great movie that doesn't get much recognition. Not sure why. If you haven't seen it and like romcoms, you should definitely see this movie.
