Strongly disagree. That'd be pretty freaking cawesome.

Too much on visions and dog ceremonies which took away from a great story line. The mythological sword with the magic sheath that would only work when prophecy allowed it was out of place. Yes it fit with the visions but again they were what took away from the movie. It reminded me of the sword stuck in stone waiting for the right knight to pull it out.

Not even close to an epic film which is a shame because all the ingredients were there.

Felt the complete opposite. This movie would have been dry as hell without the visions/quasi-supernatural events. That stuff absolutely added to the story for me.

I think it feels very much like a story the Icelandic Vikings themselves would have told.

I'm sure many know some or all of what follows, not trying to talk down to anyone but I got on a roll and maybe someone will find it interesting.
The sword that won't draw in the daylight is the most unexplainable item, the only one that sounds like it might actually be magic. So that's a problem for us, but for them… well, it's reminiscent of Skofnung, or some of the legends around the Ulfbehrt swords.

One of the flawless examples is when Amleth perceives that he's being carried off to Valhalla by a Valkyrie, but then wakes to find that it was what's-her-name takin him to safety. It's emblematic of how myth and the supernatural percolates through a lot of the movie: when they are wounded or on drugs, things that distort perception, they start interpreting reality through the lense of the religion and legends.

Almost every other instance is when they have taken hallucinogenic mushrooms, either on purpose or by accident. It was a requirement of the shamanistic dog ceremony (super realistic down to the ladder into the Earth; symbolic death and resurrection and becoming animals is absolutely core to shamanism). When Amleth had his vision of the female seer after the raid, he would have been coming down off the shrooms. Taking mushrooms before battle was something berserkers did; they believed the mushrooms turned them into supernatural bears (ber- comes from the same Germanic root as bear).

Just got out, and this was exactly what I assumed it would be from the trailer and reviews. Not sure why some were surprised or put off by the "supernatural/mythology" elements woven throughout. The trailers and reviews told you this was what the movie would be.

Not sure how many times I'll watch it again, as it was very heavy, but really liked it. This was the type of intense trippy visual feast I need from movies every now and then.

Saw yesterday with a friend. Not typically my kind of movie and had no prior knowledge other than watching the trailer but really enjoyed it. Beautiful cinematography and great casting. Definitely had all the elements of a viking fever dream but also had surprising nuance among the lead characters. Wasn't just good vs. evil, and the bad guy was actually kind of likeable.

No ***** I wasn't expecting that, so when it happened....and I was watching the movie by myself late at night....let's just say this grown man in his 40's was a little "unnerved".

Finally got to see it last night before it leaves theaters.

Wow...

As a history teacher and general history nerd I loved all of the attention to detail. I loved that they wanted to transport you into a very strange, unfamiliar culture and immerse you in it without a lot of explanation. I found it gripping and loved the different characters. The "tree" vision it showed several times was one of my favorite aspects. Can see why it's definitely not for everyone and feel bad for people going in expecting something like Gladiator but I appreciate that Eggers took his own approach to it. Very cool movie.

The problem I had, was that it was advertised as a Viking revenge movie. What we got was thenn
Norse myth that Hamlet was based on. With maybe some meth

I got that. I don't really remember the trailer tbh but if it wasn't pretty weird it needed to be just so people didn't think this was going to be like the Vikings History Channel series. Or they could have just said "from the director of that weird ass movie The Lighthouse, another weird ass movie that will have you wondering if the movie theater laced your soda with Salvia"

Saw it today and enjoyed it. I haven't seen Eggars other movies, so my expectations of being something closer to a Braveheart/Gladiator style revenge movie didn't pan out, but I still had fun.

I heard an interview Eggars did talking about his commitment to making authentic movies anD he definitely succeeded there. Everything felt very real and accurate in that regard.

Another element I appreciated that bugs me about so many movies set in the medieval/ancient world is that thankfully, thankfully there wasn't a tiny female character meleeing grown men. As soon as what's her name's character was introduced I was conditioned to expect to see her 110 pound self take our 5 seasoned Vikings with karate and thankfully that moment never happened.

FYI this is now available on Peacock.

Just watched it, that movie is rad. The final fight, like the rest of the movie, epic. It's basically Nordic revenge porn, really fun.

Forgot I had a subscription because of the Super Bowl. Logged in for the first time in months today and was surprised to see this. Watched it all the way through. Wasn't normal WTF Eggers, but still Eggers. I loved it. Great revenge flick.

Watched this on Peacock last night and loved it. Amazing depiction of Norse culture and loved how Nicole was essentially the bad guy. Amazing flick will watch again.

This thread reminds me why I always hate all the Twitter reviews tctts posts. They are always so over the top and borderline orgasmic about movies so often that every time I read them and then see the movie they are talking about I am extremely let down. Finally watched this last night and while it was cool and all, it wasn't odins gift to filmmaking or anything. Above average certainly, but I doubt I will be giving it a second look. Unfortunately, my expectations were way too high after reading this thread so long ago right before the movie first came out.

Same here. Liked it ok, but wasn't great by any means. A respectable movie, nothing really that special. Might see it again at some point, but there's so many better options to watch first. Same with The Witch and the orgasmic build up on that thread. That one was even more disappointing than this one. Won't be watching that one again.

Oh well. To each his own. Just odd how things get portrayed as so amazing that it will blow everyone off their feet, but then later there's the "well I liked it, and it's obviously not for everyone, so it's definitely a matter of taste" claims to back track how mind blowing it is supposed to be based on expectations made from threads on here. Downplaying up front, but with optimism, would be better, than presenting it as if it's the greatest movie of all time. But that's just me.

Maybe, just maybe, people who watch movies for a living have different opinions about certain movies than some of you. That doesn't make them right or wrong, just different. Also, I've caveated enough Twitter reactions over the years that it should be common practice now to take them with a grain of salt. That, and the only reason I post them is because they're often the *first* reactions, which I treat more like late-breaking news, rather than barometers to base your expectations on.

Either way, it will never not amuse me how bent out of shape a handful of you get over those tweets, when you can so easily ignore them, or, again, simply not let them have any bearing on your anticipation/opinion.

Its simply to just create hype and excitement, which is fun and part of the experience of big movies coming out.

What we really need is someone to create a key to reference, so we can have the Twitter accounts ranked by how much they overhype vs give realistic takes. Then color coordinate it

Remember the Green Knight?

Sea Speed is just calling a spade a spade. A certain poster phallates an upcoming movie, if it's good, he says "see!" and posters applaud him. If its meh "well its not for everyone, us in the industry appreciate it," and posters just nod their head and say they too see the emperor's clothes. If its trash "well, it had all the right pieces, just poor execution" posters just shrug, take the explanation, and extend the head coaching contract another 5 years with guaranteed money.
