Have enjoyed the series, but West and Westhead both have a legitimate beef. Went way too far. They've taken it so far that it is a pretty sizable blemish on what is otherwise a well done series.

Did Haywood have a crack problem in real life?

If he did, I don't see the problem. If he didn't, I'd agree that is a pretty ****ty thing for them to write in for the character.

But the West character is great and if getting portrayed like that bothers you enough to be vocal about it, you were never going to be happy with how you are portrayed.

Did you mean to say Haywood? I don't remember Westhead being involved with drugs in the show. But Haywood did have a drug problem.

Westhead is the interim HC, not Avon Barksdale. He and West have basically been written as caricatures.

This is where I'm at as well. I don't care that Dr. J cradle dunked over Cooper and not Magic (and heck, it was in '83) and I don't care about the inaccuracies of the actual season (there was no 2 game losing steak before Boston and they had already smoked the Celtics in LA). I want to be entertained and this season, especially last night, have been VERY entertaining.

As for individual characterizations I don't care about accuracy either...sometimes truth is stranger than fiction but many times it's just boring. If you want accuracy watch a documentary (spoiler alert: many documentaries are very inaccurate as well).

Great episode. My wife sat on the couch at the beginning of the episode and was on her phone. (Never seen one episode). She ended up watching the entire show. She's a laker fan so she was grinning when she saw some of the players.

I love the coach storyline between McKinnly, Westhead, and Pat. The last scene with McKinnly telling Westhead why he hired him.... that was brutal.

Still loving the series and hate that it'll be over soon but I (finally) have a couple of gripes from the last episode:
  • One of the great choices the producers made was casting unknowns for the player parts. But, the guy they cast as Dr. J has been in a ton of stuff and so I could tell it was just him in a bad Dr. J wig.
  • The scene with Buss fondling the nurse in his car while he gave her a ride home came off as super cringey and made him seem like a sexual predator; especially given how he was using the emotion of his sick mother to take advantage of her. I think they were trying to make him seem like a 1970's playful rascal but the look on her face told me that she wasn't enjoying it at all. Reilly has done a good job of finding the balance between Buss being likeable and being a cheesy playboy. It doesn't necessarily seem off-brand for Buss but it sure made him seem like a predator.

I don't think that was Buss' intentions when he poured his heart out to her, it was almost like she was a mother figure he needed in that moment but then his instincts kicked in and he couldn't help himself, which is obviously awful and wrong on every level and sadly she's thinking "this is the price I have to pay for my son's education."

Especially when a number of other instances are provably false, particularly when it comes to how they reworked the schedule/games themselves. That, and, I mean, Jeannie Buss didn't join the Lakers organization until 1988. There are so many things like that. So yeah, doubling down on this "extensive factual research" claim seems like a really bad idea.

Funny moment that I hope was on purpose...While watching Dr. J dunk on Kareem in the all-star game scene, Mark Landsberger makes the "that's so humiliating" comment. Remember that it was Landsberger who got left on the ground when Dr. J made the incredible one-handed, up and under reverse lay up that will be replayed forever.

It seems like they were trying to insinuate wealthy men during that era wielded outsized power and abused it for sex, which isn't a necessary message in this show.

It was some powerful stuff...to be honest I was hoping for fireworks this episode between McKinney and Riley/Westhead instead of the somewhat lame "I'm lost and I can't get up" stuff we got. Buss and his mom was so moving though it didn't really bother me that much.

I will say I'm kind of in and out on this series overall. I kind of lost interest after the first two for a bit, but watched 3-4 last night, and really enjoyed 4 in particular.

Have to say the grainy film look has gotten no less obnoxious and intrusive though. It really adds nothing to the show and is really distracting.

But it does feel like things are kind of clicking into place now, so looking forward to continuing.
