Episode 7 was my favorite so far. The back and forth with Bird and the Celtics is going to be a blast. That whole dynamic was just so perfect, I can't believe how lucky the NBA was to have it fall into their lap.

And Riley, I loved the way it felt like a super hero origin story with him losing the 'stache and going to the slicked back hair (like dad) when he transformed into the coach he was destined to be.

Show is really hitting a new stride, and I'm here for it.

Haha, exactly. Well put. They keep teasing it, and it's so fun to watch. Never in a million years would I have thought I'd be so giddy in anticipation for someone to slick back their hair.

Great episode overall.

That woman offscreen who shouts, "Suck my di*k, Magic!" had me rolling.

I also loved the contrasting announcer styles where each thought their team was getting screwed over by the officials. So true, and obviously transcends just about all sports.

Also Jerry West listening to the game, turning it off and on and dying with each possession. Sounds like me on a typical Saturday in the fall.

I'm sure they have made Jerry west into an over the top caricature that isn't accurate but he continues to be my favorite character. It's built to the point where you can see it coming when he insists on staying in the limo for the game and you know it won't end well for him.

From everything I've read, that was a 100% accurate portrayal of Johnny Most. He was a delusional fan behind the mic in his final years.

They did a great job with the Lakers-Celtics game and Jerry living and dying with every possession in the limo.

I get they wanted to create drama but the whole lead up to the Celtics game was complete BS and not real. Neither was the actual game with Boston.

The first game against Boston was actually in LA and the Lakers kicked their ass. They also weren't on some sort of bad losing streak leading up to the game against Boston. Neither the one in LA or the one in Boston.

for anybody enjoying winning time, if you haven't already watched the magic/bird documentary also on hbo max, you really should. just a really well-done documentary that gives you real access to both guys talking about their relationship from the beginning.

Is it just me, but parts that are dedicated to just Magic kinda fall flat and I get bored. When it's Magic with Karem I'm good, but the Magic and Cookie / Magic and his mom stuff I get bored.

100%. I really like the actor, but Magic's home/love life storyline is all so one-note and has dragged on forever. We all know he ends up with Cookie. Enough already. At the very least, please don't make us go back to Michigan yet again.

At least we did get a nice interaction between Kareem and Magic's dad but yeah, the Cookie drama is so...well, cookie-cutter (no pun intended). The fact we know he ends up with her makes it even worse...so what if he just banged Rhonda, even if Cookie found out we all know she would pout and end up with him anyway.

Reminds me of a joke I used to tell when the Magic AIDS story broke where I would say there's no way Cookie will divorce him, what if she ends up with a guy named John Doe.

I think it's because Cookie is portrayed as a batch.

Came to post the exact same opinion. In a series filled with excellent casting and amazingly accurate portrayals, Jason Clarke as Jerry West continues to stand out. I have no idea if it's accurate but he always makes me laugh.

They have mentioned several times that the two teams already played, and that the Lakers pretty much shut down Bird in the first meeting.

Nice article.

The show is entertaining and I enjoy. But it does annoy me that they don't keep it more grounded in reality.

I watched the HBO documentary last night and it was pretty good. Gonna try the Apple+ one next.

Postscript: For those of you who are interested in exploring what really happened, I suggest you watch the excellent documentary They Call Me Magic on Apple TV+. Also, the Lakers have produced a 10-part docuseries, with the cooperation of all the players involved, which will be released later this summer on Hulu directed by Antoine Fuqua.

I was aware of the Magic doc, but not the Hulu series.

Wow, the knives are certainly out today. As much as I love West the character, I totally get the real West's beef with his portrayal…

Yeah. Not a good look for McKay and his team. I wonder why they thought they could get away with ****ting on the logo if none of it was based in fact.

I understand your position here, but I'm also a big fan of Magic's dad. The scene with him and Kareem was excellent.

yeah, it's a really odd decision to make, but i get why McKay thought he'd get away with it. it's not like Vice is 100% based in fact and he was celebrated and nominated for all sorts of awards for that one. i'm sure he just feels dramatic portrayals and embellishment are just part of the gig.

but by all accounts, they've just really gone off the rails in their portrayal of West and they had to expect some sort of reaction from that.

doesn't mean it's actionable or that Jerry has any real legal remedy. but there is zero reason for McKay and HBO not to put out a statement clarifying that it is a dramatization added to make the story more interesting and apologizing to West.

Granted it isn't me that they are taking liberties with but I don't get the issue.

It isn't like they are making him look like a monster, a liar, or a crook. They are just making him excessively passionate about the game. Are they making him a caricature? Sure. Are they damaging his reputation or legacy? Absolutely not

He seems like a snowflake getting worked up about this.

I think Kareem said it best:

Quote:

they turn him into a Wile E. Coyote cartoon to be laughed at. He never broke golf clubs, he didn't throw his trophy through the window. Sure, those actions make dramatic moments, but they reek of facile exploitation of the man rather than exploration of character.

It's mostly just lazy. I've noticed the from the start of the show...to the point where I googled to see if some of the West stuff was true/based on true stories since I wasn't around back then so I don't know.

And I'm not sure I would agree that they're not damaging his reputation or legacy. For a lot of younger people or those not tuned into the history of the NBA this might be their most insight into Jerry West.

That said I don't think it's a major deal...I just found it interesting he is the one seemingly being singled out with such an over the top caricature, with hardly anything about it positive.

I did like how they showed Rick Barry and his granny style free throw...silly looking, but effective. FYI - he shot 94% from the line that year.

It's so funny how sacred sports figures and events become to some people. My guess is that Kareem didn't mind that the Dick Cheney movie that Adam McKay directed treated George W. Bush as a "facile exploitation of the man rather than exploration of character."

What's funny is that the small moments in Winning Time where they reveal Kareem's insights and motivations have made me like him more. Actually there's no one in the series that I like less now after watching it.

I think the only person who has a legitimate beef is Paul Westhead; he was much more capable than the series suggests.
