The Boston fans' portrayal was funny as heck...brutal

Episode 7 was my favorite so far. The back and forth with Bird and the Celtics is going to be a blast. That whole dynamic was just so perfect, I can't believe how lucky the NBA was to have it fall into their lap.
And Riley, I loved the way it felt like a super hero origin story with him losing the 'stache and going to the slicked back hair (like dad) when he transformed into the coach he was destined to be.
Show is really hitting a new stride, and I'm here for it.
That woman offscreen who shouts, "Suck my di*k, Magic!" had me rolling.Psychag said:

I also loved the contrasting announcer styles where each thought their team was getting screwed over by the officials. So true, and obviously transcends just about all sports.
Also Jerry West listening to the game, turning it off and on and dying with each possession. Sounds like me on a typical Saturday in the fall.
At least we did get a nice interaction between Kareem and Magic's dad but yeah, the Cookie drama is so...well, cookie-cutter (no pun intended). The fact we know he ends up with her makes it even worse...so what if he just banged Rhonda, even if Cookie found out we all know she would pout and end up with him anyway.TexjbA&M said:
Is it just me, but parts that are dedicated to just Magic kinda fall flat and I get bored. When it's Magic with Karem I'm good, but the Magic and Cookie / Magic and his mom stuff I get bored.
Came to post the exact same opinion. In a series filled with excellent casting and amazingly accurate portrayals, Jason Clarke as Jerry West continues to stand out. I have no idea if it's accurate but he always makes me laugh.InternetFan02 said:
I'm sure they have made Jerry west into an over the top caricature that isn't accurate but he continues to be my favorite character. It's built to the point where you can see it coming when he insists on staying in the limo for the game and you know it won't end well for him.
They have mentioned several times that the two teams already played, and that the Lakers pretty much shut down Bird in the first meeting.tylercsbn9 said:
I get they wanted to create drama but the whole lead up to the Celtics game was complete BS and not real. Neither was the actual game with Boston.
The first game against Boston was actually in LA and the Lakers kicked their ass. They also weren't on some sort of bad losing streak leading up to the game against Boston. Neither the one in LA or the one in Boston.

That headline is actually very on-brand with their version of Kareem.Teddy Perkins said:Kareem's actual blog post.TCTTS said:Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Slams HBO’s ‘Winning Time’: Boring, Shallow and ‘Deliberately Dishonest’ https://t.co/aVnKfDkfIV

I was aware of the Magic doc, but not the Hulu series.Quote:Quote:
Postscript: For those of you who are interested in exploring what really happened, I suggest you watch the excellent documentary They Call Me Magic on Apple TV+. Also, the Lakers have produced a 10-part docuseries, with the cooperation of all the players involved, which will be released later this summer on Hulu directed by Antoine Fuqua.

I understand your position here, but I'm also a big fan of Magic's dad. The scene with him and Kareem was excellent.TCTTS said:
100%. I really like the actor, but Magic's home/love life storyline is all so one-note and has dragged on forever. We all know he ends up with Cookie. Enough already. At the very least, please don't make us go back to Michigan yet again.
yeah, it's a really odd decision to make, but i get why McKay thought he'd get away with it. it's not like Vice is 100% based in fact and he was celebrated and nominated for all sorts of awards for that one. i'm sure he just feels dramatic portrayals and embellishment are just part of the gig.Bunk Moreland said:
Yeah. Not a good look for McKay and his team. I wonder why they thought they could get away with ****ting on the logo if none of it was based in fact.

they turn him into a Wile E. Coyote cartoon to be laughed at. He never broke golf clubs, he didn't throw his trophy through the window. Sure, those actions make dramatic moments, but they reek of facile exploitation of the man rather than exploration of character.
