Poor execution is different from a bad idea. This book/movie isn't all that different from many other sci-fi novels in its plot.Bruce Almighty said:

I remember the theory that all of our computer, etc. technology was based on the original Alien ship they recovered in Roswell. That discovering the ship in 1947 and stealing its technology jump started our innovations. So they would be based on each other.javajaws said:

First you've got the speaking/written language differences, then you have human vs alien differences - those would be just unimaginable to overcome in a short time, and then you have hardware and software differences.
But somehow they get past all that and are able to identify some security vulnerability in alien software...in what - a day? Yeeeeaaahhhhh right.
This one is brought up a lot, but I honestly don't think it's that crazy. I don't think training an astronaut to drill would be all that much easier than training a driller to be an astronaut (setting aside piloting the ship, etc). Obviously you need a mix of both astronauts / drillers, but I really think people are underestimating how difficult it is to learn and conduct sensitive drilling operations. It really is ridiculously technical and damn near like conducting operations in space.Champ Bailey said:

Surprised Moonfall isn't in here.
It was more than a theory. It was apparently one of the clips cut from the final version. So they actually filmed it and everything. (It might be on the DVD.. I don't own it so I don't know) I wish they would have left it in. I think that would have been an awesome reveal. That basically all of our modern technology is based off alien technology.Quad Dog said:I remember the theory that all of our computer, etc. technology was based on the original Alien ship they recovered in Roswell. I never knew that! That would make a lot more sense.aTmAg said:It was more than a theory. It was apparently one of the clips cut from the final version. So they actually filmed it and everything. Woods didn't believe what he was saying, he was toeing whatever political / party line that forced him to discredit the trip. His smirk / nod of acknowledgement when asked why there was 37 minutes of static showed that he was playing a part.aTmAg said:Maybe you should watch it again. Contact was great at first, but the end sucked. Not the part with the dad, but the whole Congressional hearing part. The notion that they would accuse her of lying or that nobody would believe her when light was glowing out of the thing and it pulled a ship towards it is prosperous. No way could that be kept secret.
Maybe you should watch the end again, they are not accusing her of lying. They present it in the hearing as a final elaborate hoax by SR Hadden and that she was an unknowing actor in the hoax.
I realize they were trying to bring it back to "faith", but God it was stupid.
They cut the scenes where all of our computing is reverse engineered from them.javajaws said:

I agree. My point is that nobody would fall for it. That it would be such a preposterous claim that politicians wouldn't try to sell it to the media or public.HtownAg92 said:Woods didn't believe what he was saying, he was toeing whatever political / party line that forced him to discredit the trip.
