Looks like they named a new Who today. Don't know him too much but excited that Russell T Davies is back as show runner. Hopefully he can fix how bad the show has been over the past 4 years.

And that's not all on Jodie who is a fine actress, but she was given nothing to work with in the storytelling and writing.

Anyone watch the finale last night of Jodie's run as the Doctor?

She regenerated into Tennant. He's officially the 14th doctor and will be doing 3 episodes.

Thought it was a real good episode, although a bit hectic at times. Unfortunately no more episodes until November of next year.

I believe it's to reset from the past 5 years of Doctor Who and represent a clean break from what the show was to where it's going. Jodie's era had the lowest ratings of all the new Who seasons. The Timeless Child storyline turned off a lot of loyal fans when it retconned pretty much everything we knew about the Doctor and made many things meaningless. It was so bad, that they completely abandoned that storyline and just shelved it for another show runner that wants to take it up somewhere down the line and try to fix it.

Chibnall also did a terrible job of coming up with good 'monster-of-the-week' episodes which are what endears most fans to the doctors. In my opinion, Chibnall would nearly have killed the show if it kept going down this route as viewership was cut by 40% since the first season of Capaldi. Doctor Who averaged between 7-8 million viewers for every season until the last two seasons of Capaldi and then Jodie's run. Dipping to a low of 4.95 million this past season.

It's one of the main reasons they brought back Russell T Davies as the showrunner and head writer, to try and get back to basics of what everyone loved about the first 5-6 years of nuWho. I believe these 3 episodes will be a noticed transition to get people back watching cause it's one of (if not the) most beloved doctors returning and allow a softer landing for Ncuti when he gets going full time. It puts a clear division between Chibnall/Jodie's era, and this new one.

I also think this will allow them to get back on a schedule of releasing a new season every year which Davies has mentioned was one of his goals with taking over. It's hurt that starting with the last season or two of Matt Smith's run that there's been about 18 months to 2 years between seasons being released. It killed the momentum of one of the hottest shows on TV back in 2012 or so.

Thanks, that makes me feel better. I basically watched most of the first season with Capaldi and turned it off.

So they just announced who Ncuti's companion will be. Millie Gibson....I'm very interested to see where the show goes from here.

Are you familiar with the show? They have a long history of bringing back previous incarnations for special episodes, and have hinted before - pretty bluntly - that the doctor could regenerate into an old face

And I'm sure the BBC execs decided that a little fan service might be in order after a couple years of throwing the finger up at fans.

I'll admit, though, that I've never quite understood why "fan service" is supposed to be such a bad thing, especially for a franchise that has survived multiple generations of fans. God forbid they try to entertain the audience! Everything must challenge and confuse us with subverted expectations!

World Premiere tonight for the first of the 2023 specials. They released the widespread release dates earlier this month. These will all be on Disney+.

November 25th - The Star Beast
December 2nd - Wild Blue Yonder
December 9th - The Giggle

Minor spoilers for those who haven't seen the last episode:

These are the 60th Anniversary Specials where 13 (Jodie Whittaker) regenerated after getting shot by the Master. She regenerated into 14th, surprisingly as Tennant. Where he just has 3 lines where he said "What?!" three times.

I'm very interested in this as I thought the run of the 13th doctor was absolutely terrible. There were a couple of decent episodes, but overall the writing was just plain bad. And don't get me started on the Timeless Children. This is being billed as almost a complete reset to what Doctor Who was back in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

I believe they plan on having a Christmas Special this year as well with Ncuti as the 15th and the next full season in April or so.

Anyone else interested in this?

Considering Donna's daughter is trans in character and in real life, I figure that would have stood out more

I am so disappointed about that episode. Sci-if is always on the progressive side but it's usually weaved into the storyline in a way that mirrors certain struggles the character in question is going through.

That was so much pandering it was nauseating.

There was no point in Rose's transgenderism. It wasn't woven into the story line, it wasn't a shared trouble where something was learned and the character overcame or learned something about themselves.

It was literally in your face for the sake of being in your face. No other reason. And it was such in your face that you couldn't glide past it. It was the entire point of the episode.

I was really hoping to get past this woke bull**** in entertainment but that was the most blatant I've ever seen.

I hate that was a lot of people's first foray into the Dr Who Universe seeing as it's the only episode on Disney+. I've been looking forward to this episode for over a year and was so disappointed.

Just skip this episode in the future

The second episode was much much better, and a really good baddie introduced. Just a great monster of the week type of episode that Doctor Who does better than most.

Wasn't a 10/10 but just a damn solid episode.

I'm real curious how they're going to make this 3 episode arc make sense. The only question raised so far is why "his face" came back and this middle episode didn't address that in the slightest.

But I will definitely be rewatching this in the future.

Has anyone watched the latest special? I thought it was pretty decent although a little convoluted at the end.

I thought the game of catch was just a dumb way to end it. I thought they could have done something a bit more clever than that.

I have no issue with the bi-regeneration and it can potentially solve the whole Curator storyline from the 50th anniversary. There was speculation it was going to open up the possibility of a spinoff but I'm not sure if that would be successful to be honest.

Ncuti has a great energy and I think he's gonna do really well.

Curious anyone's thoughts on who's hand that was that picked up the gold tooth that had the Masters existence in it. I've seen speculation of the Rani as well as Missy. Also who it is the Toymaker mentioned even he wouldn't play a game against.

Overall I would rank the specials as the following:

The Star Beast - 5/10 - On rewatch it was a little better but the wokeness brought this one down tremendously in my eyes.

Wild Blue Yonder - 8/10 - Just a solid Monster of the Week type of episode that Dr Who does so well. Good villains.

The Giggle - 7/10 - Very solid penultimate episode. Didn't stick the landing in my eyes but introduced a "mystery" for the new Doctor to chase down and it got me excited about Ncuti in the future.

Name a better duo than an RTD Tennant episode with a woman's hand picking up an object. Let's see if we get a better resolution this time

I enjoyed it. It isn't the most clear with the biregeneration but it read to me that someday in the future Tennant will regenerate and that doctor gets pulled back to the Toymaker encounter. He told the doctor that he is doing better because of the work that 14 did

I did think having a less trauma filled doctor will be an interesting change of pace

When I watched this, I was legitimately shocked because I thought the whole idea of the reset was to get away from the disastrous 13th doctor, which I instantly tuned out of because of how ridiculously preachy it got. 2 and 3 were better, but man that first special was horrible. Also, is the 15th doctor meant to be gay? I haven't read anything about it, but he sure seemed to be leaning that way. If they go that direction, I have to imagine the preaching isn't going to stop.

RTD is massively gay and has more power now culturally to do as he pleases. The spice girl scene might have been the gayest scene in doctor who history

Somehow I didn't know that. Maybe he'll keep it from being a main topic? One can hope, right?

I don't believe RTD will make the doctor any more of a sexual tension then there already is. Apparently there won't be relationship drama between the doctor and Ruby Sunday (which is odd when you see how drop dead gorgeous she is in real life).

He was the one to introduce Captain Jack Harkness, however, but that weirdly wasn't that crazy.

Ncuti (new Doctor) is very flamboyant in real life so I'm sure that theatricalness (is that a word?) will be apparent on screen. That's my hope anyway.

Finally watched the third special. Not bad but I kept getting pulled out of the story by NPH being NPH.

Agree the final game could have been much more clever. Didn't even make sense as a game. Why not just throw the opposite direction?

Yup.

Gatwa is solid so far. He and Ruby (Millie Gibson) have a palpable chemistry. Rivals Tennant/Tate and Gillian/Smith.

Writing for two most recent episodes is typical RTD fluff (good and bad). The first episode, Space Babies, is just as nonsensical as you'd expect. But who cares. Gatwa has his "Doctor" moment at the end which is engaging and works.

The Devils Chord is not a perfect episode from a plotting or character motivation standpoint but, man, it's great to see a creative energy and idea like that episode's plot back in this show. There's a sequence in this episode that from a sound design standpoint is fantastic and a very novel idea.

The Disney $ is on the screen and the show looks as good as it's ever been.

Next episode is penned by Moffat. We will see how that goes.

Space Babies was just a monster of the week episode. Besides the little comment of "you mean the civilization wouldn't let the babies die but won't take care of them after they're born?" line that Ruby said. A little too obvious the statement there. But other than that, just a typical dr who episode.

The Maestro I thought was a really good villain. What a weird ending and constant breaking of the fourth wall will definitely play into the over arching theme. I think we're gonna see a way out there season. Something we haven't seen before when it comes to why they keep doing that. It has to be explained, right?

This latest episode "Boom" was a great episode.

Again, there's one freaking comment an episode that grinds my gears that is pushing the liberal agenda. This time it was the comment the Doctor had about how "Faith is just an excuse to not think for yourself." and then scoffing at the Anglican soldier now all of sudden needing proof for something.

He kinda made up for it at the end when the Doctor talked to the girl about how sorry he was that her father died, and the girl said "Well he's not dead dead, just gone from here." And he responded, "That's brilliant, keep the faith Splice." The soldier then responded, "I thought you didn't like faith, Doctor?" And he responded with, "Just because I don't like it, doesn't mean I don't need it."

Still it's just an unnecessary couple of lines where it added nothing to the story IMO and was clearly just a statement. If that back and forth didn't happen, then I would put this episode at a 9/10. Just a great Dr Who episode, but that back and forth drops it down to a 7/10.

Every episode so far has one or two lines that are totally unnecessary, and if you take them out of the episodes, the season is pretty damn good so far. I'm hoping this next one takes a break from it as it looks like a good scary story the way the trailer looks.

The Doctor is always pretty dismissive of The Church in most episodes.

Also a British show, so the concept of a liberal agenda is very different than an American one.
