Had a chance to watch this weekend and wasn't very impressed. They've hyped this on The Ringer for a while so I had a level of expectation that wasn't met. I thought Cumberbatch was great, super intense. Kodi Smit-McPhee was good too. Not sure what my thoughts on Plemons and Dunst are right now, neither performance struck me as anything special. It was beautifully shot, really enjoyed the look of the film. I don't mind a slow burn of a film, but that wasn't what bothered me about it.

It felt too much like someone trying to do their version of There Will Be Blood to me. With a light amount of Brokeback Mountain. I know it's based on a book, which I've never read, but I picked up on what Phil's deal was very quickly, it's wasn't difficult. I didn't find anything surprising or particularly clever. Perhaps what ruined it for me was the There Will Be Blood vibes I was getting. That's my favorite PT Anderson film and one of my favorites of the last 20 years.

Curious what others think about this one that also watched it.

I have not seen the film but I read the book about a month ago.

I enjoyed the book, which was slow and character driven. The style, setting, and Western subject matter reminded me quite a bit of Willa Cather's prairie novels, and Cather is one of my favorite writers.

Pretty obvious what is going on with Phil, but I did not see the plot twist coming at the end. A bit abrupt, which knocks the book down a notch for me.

Thought it was painfully slow. Won't watch it again.

half way through....

it is slow but somewhat ... interesting. i assume filmed in NZ?

claims to be montana but not seeing it.

i would say that old benedict should stick to english characters.... his accent is very strained.

the other breaking bad guy just doesnt say much at all.

but its so weird that it is strangely a bit interesting so far.

I think this is a really good movie but I understand why some would dislike it or be bored with it. The landscape shots (while clearly not Montana) are stunning, the score is really good, and the performance by Cumberbatch is as advertised. It's weird how for the first 1.5 hours of this movie, it's so tense and just feels like a fight will break out at any moment. And when that passes and you realize why, the movie becomes something totally different.

I don't know. I didn't love it, but the longer I sit with it the more I do like it.

The book spends quite a bit of time developing the story of the woman's first husband, a failure who commits suicide.

Does the movie spend much time on him?

No I would say you get a few mentions in key moments and that's about it really.

I just watched it and really enjoyed it. Very similar to There Will Be Blood in terms of tone, tension, look, and Jonny Greenwoods score.

Gets a big thumbs up from me. It deserves it's spots on the top 10 lists and wouldn't be surprised to see an Oscar nom.

Beautifully shot, acting was fantastic. I actually loved the ending. I get they were going for a slow tense burn, but I could have done with just I bit more narrative and not all the shots being so long. I found myself bored and ready for the next scene most of the movie. That being said all in all I think it's pretty good overall.

It was ok...a little slow. Cumberbatch continues to impress though. He did a great job in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain too.

I try to give nearly every major Oscar contender a shot, and usually have all the patience in the world for films like this, but 32 minutes in and I'm going to have to turn this one off. At least for now. Just not feeling it at all.

I thought it was trying to hard, and the score was way to much. It built to nothing and didn't seem to have a point.

I wiki'd it:

Did the kid kill him due to homophobia, or to kind of save his mom? Or something?

I have mixed feelings about it. I agree with what others have said about the Miss Nancy's motivation, that he offed Phil to protect his mother. However, I still feel I am missing something.

As far as comparisons to "There Will Be Blood", Paul Dano was originally cast to play George. He dropped out due to a scheduling conflict, and that's when they cast Meth Damon. I presume he was a last-minute casting because he was already in NZ with Kirsten Dunst and their kids.

I turned it off after 20 minutes....terrible.
In my experience, there's no such thing as luck.

Not surprisingly after listening to that actual interview with Maron. His comments were not homophobic in the sense it's being advertised and in headlines. He definitely didn't like the movie and I think all it's fan fair and Oscar buzz that bothers him. I think he's saying without the gay story line, there wouldn't be all the critical acclaim and he maybe right.

It is intriguing and definitely warrants artistic merit, but now being several months since I've seen it I can definitely say it's forgettable and haven't warmed to it over time like you do with some movies. Would have been fine not seeing it.

I thought this was a western and for some stupid reason I never turned it off even though it was boring and absolutely terrible. Wasn't this critically acclaimed and won a bunch of awards or at least was nominated? Woof.

just had the opportunity to finally watch this one.

it was interesting and went a different direction than i thought it would.

i knew phil loved bronco henry a bit too much and his shrine sealed the deal in that department.

i liked how the initial impression was that phil would be the villain, but instead he was just an emotionally stunted and closeted man who, while a bully, ends up the victim.

that kid was cold blooded!
