I'll throw in Ronnie Milsap. Beautiful voice and witty behind the piano during a performance.

I met him one time. Said, "Good to see you...so to speak."

My wife saw him perform at a casino in Mississippi once. Before he came on, they announced over the speaker "Sorry for the delay folks but Ronnie wanted to drive the tour bus here today so he's running a little late." You then heard tires screeching and a loud crash and a tire rolled across the stage.

He used to have a gag where he would walk to the very edge of the stage, and everyone would kind of gasp. He would say something like, "What? Are y'all afraid I'm gonna fall off? The band tells me I've got 10 more feet."

Anyway, it was funny in the '70s and '80s.

for me it's Waylon and Jerry Jeff. understanding that all the answers on this thread are great, these are just the ones who hit my ears the best. i seriously haven't seen one bad suggestion (except Conway Twitty, just never liked him.).

surprised to not have seen George Jones yet (or maybe i missed him).

also a massive fan of Roger Miller.

Cash, while i can appreciate him just never did much for me.

couple of artists who haven't been mentioned:

Delbert Mclinton and Leon Russell.

edit to say: just watch the Country Music documentary. everything in there is just awesome.

Gary Stewart was the absolute best at a dance hall. I can hear two or three notes and get momma up for a spin.
