She's not the hero that America deserves, but she's the one we need.

I guess I never really thought about it but I didn't know what a badass Dolly was until the Country Music documentary.

100% Dolly Parton. Especially when you look at all the other things she has down outside of country music.

Pantheon in no particular order:
Hank Sr
George Jones
Waylon
Willie
Merle
Ernest Tubb
Sturgill (I know it's tough to compare eras but think he's there)

Tier below:
Ray Price
Buck Owens
Cash

Then everyone else.

I'm pretty proud of this playlist.

Merle Haggard is my favorite of all time. Dude was lights out and has way to many tunes I could post. 38 #1's great voice, guitar player, great song writer and like Waylon a true outlaw.

I like most of the artists mentioned in this thread, but if I'm picking one, I'd have to go with Merle. As a vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and live performer. So good at so many aspects of his career, at different ages. There are people whose songwriting does more for me on the whole, and there are better saxophonists and fiddlers. But nobody could do everything he did as well as he did.

Buck Owens was great but the Buckaroos were probably the best back up band. Dangerous Don Rich, Tom Brumley, Doyle Holly and Willie Cantu were great behind Buck.

There's a lot of great country old country to choose from, but for me, there are a handful of songs that make everything in the world seems to melt away for a moment when I hear them. It's almost like I'm back at the Chicken with a pitcher of beer playing 42, not a care in the world.

Hank Williams Sr. - Your Cheatin' Heart
Tammy Wynette - Stand By Your Man
Conway Twitty - Hello Darlin'

My initial answer as well.

I'm also a big fan of Mr. Ray Price.

Edited to add former member of Ray's band, The Cherokee Cowboys:

and of course...

The Willie Nelson Ray Price album from the 80's is an all time favorite of mine. So much country gold.

Looks like Merle is the winner with Dolly runner-up and I agree.

Happy to see no mention of Garth Brooks. Guy is a clown.

I know he doesn't have the legacy of some of these other greats, but I'd like to nominate Chris Stapleton. His music has gotten me through some *****

A lot of greatness on this thread, but in my opinion the only two valid choices are Willie and George Strait. Everyone else is a notch or two below.

If I'm making my Mt Rushmore of country music, I'm probably putting Don Williams on it…

A nod to Hank Williams as he played with a cousin of mine, Big Bill Lister; whom originally recorded "There's a Tear in my Beer."

Quote:

In October of 1951, Hank Williams was cutting sides for MGM at Castle Studios, And Big Bill Lister was there as well cutting songs for Capitol. Capitol wanted him to record another "Drinking" song as his song Beer Drinking blues had found success among the Jukeboxes in Honky Tonks. He had a session coming up but he didn't have a "Drinking" song to record. While Hank was taking a break from his sessions Bill told him what was going on. Hank told him "Don't worry hoss, I got one that'll cock your pistol" The next morning Hank brought an acetate record to him titled "There's A Tear In My Beer". Bill recorded it and the acetate was lost for years until it was uncovered and used for the much more famous Duet with his son. This is the "original" recording of the song by Big Bill Lister, hope y'all enjoy!

And to tie it all together, the band name "Buckaroos" was thought up by a guy that played bass with them for a couple weeks, Merle Haggard.

I always love some Gary Stewart. Very tragic and sad about his death. Let's pound some beers, play some 42 and play the hell out of Gary Stewart.

I'm surprised he was playing piano. I always imagined him singing this song with a guitar.
