It might wind up being good. But I really just want some new ideas.

I think it could be really good, but I don't really understand why it has to be called The Wonder Years.

When we watched the Wonder Years as kids in the 80s and 90s, we identified with the show because not that much had changed from the 60s. We still rode bikes, used phones for calls, talked face to face, used encyclopedias for information, etc. Between the 60s (or 90s) and today, we went from Flintstones to Jetsons. Kids today won't identify as much with the kids in either version of the Wonder Years, which was a show that targeted kids, not adults, as viewers.

It wasn't til I was older that I learned that the wonder years was set in the 60s. Growing up in small town Texas in the 80s, it didn't look anything different from what we were doing.

Winnie's brother dies in Vietnam in episode 1, they later touch on MLK assassination, Moon Landing and RFK was killed, Apollo 13 astronauts, Nixons election .....several significant milestones were included in the show.

But actually, I will address the bigger point.

Most people "concerned" about the show being woke or whatever buzzword they want to use are already determined to dislike the show and will call out any mention of racism or discrimination as being preachy, political agenda, etc., rather than actually examining the nuanced experience of what it must have been like to be a black kid in America in the 60s/70s.

It may or may not be well done (I'm hoping for the former based on the talent involved) but to that crowd it's not going to matter either way.

I am hoping they do well with it. Wonder Years was one of if not my favorite show growing up. They dealt with controversial stuff but did it tastefully and it was very impactful. My hope is this is not over the top leftism using the name of a beloved show. Will give it a shot and hope for the best.

It had a few woke moments, like Ross from friends being preachy to the dad. But it danced around a lot and focused on teen love, heartache, and growing up. Mainly light hearted.

Zero chance of that happening now. I'm sure it will just be another "OMG IM BLACK AND LIFE ISNT FAIR" whine piece. Which sucks, because coming of age shows are some of my favorites.

It was terribad.

Might as well have called it "The Victim Years". It was exactly what we all knew it was gonna be but were told we were just F16ers.
Lost track of the references to race. "White" this and "black" that. The entire half hour was a complete beating.

The obsessive trend with rebooting old shows usually leads to crap television.

The will and Grace reboot sucked
The Roseanne one sucked
The Frazier one (I'll go out on a limb) will suck

Leave old shoes where they should be; in the past or streaming platforms.

I disagree

I think you went in looking to be offended and you were.

Well, it is set in Alabama after forced integration
Those two words were probably going to come up many times.

And the dad certainly is not coming off as a saint, especially at the baseball game.

But if you didn't like it, skip it.
I have certainly done that off one episode of a show

To provide context for Alabama in the 60's. I am in Alabama right now. I was at a neighbors house and they had a painting of a black cat on the wall. I made a comment about it and without batting an eye the 50yr old woman said "my mom painted that when I was a kid...that was my cat...little n**
***r. "

So in the 70's/80's she had a cat named "little n****r" and today doesn't see a problem with that.

You quit watching Friends because of a monkey that appeared in I would say less than 2% off all the 10 seasons of Friends (he was only involved in a handful of episodes of 1 season) lol

Edit to say he was in 8 episodes of season 1.

You wonder why a coming of age story for a black family in the 60's would pick Alabama as it's location?

I hate that take…."you went in looking to be offended"….so lazy.

No, I went in interested to see how a reboot of one of the best shows ever, and one of my favorites from my early teenage years, was going to turn out. I really want it to be good. And of course I expected civil rights to be a part of the show, it's set in 1968 for Pete's sake. But what I watched last night wasn't a "treatment" of that, it was being clubbed over the head endlessly with it. My 12 year old daughter watching it with me, turned to me about halfway in and asked "Is this show only about racism?" The only thing I told her going into it was that it was a reboot of a show from my childhood.
So spare me the subtle racist accusations. It was a beating.

You seem flabbergasted that black people in the sixties had a different experience than you did... and flat out offended to hear people discuss it. That is the literal definition of privilege. But you do you. The show will live or die based on ratings just like every other show out there and I'm okay with that.

Imagine a boy sitting down to watch The Wonder Years in the late 80's.

[Mcconaughey] now imagine he's black. [/Mcconaughey]

Just like the original Wonder Years didn't cater to black viewers, the reboot doesn't necessarily cater to white views. For whatever reason there's still a lot of people out there who don't seem to get that television programming of today -- especially network programming -- isn't catering to your typical white suburban family like it was a few decades ago.

If this triggers you or offends you, then it's your own fault for not understanding.

Just curious, but, what do you think the experiences of blacks were like in Alabama, in the 1960s?

I mean, in 1963, George Wallace said, "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!"

Also, what do you mean that you were, "clubbed over the head"? Does it bother you to hear about racism? If so, why?

What state did the original Wonder Years take place in? I dont recall it mattering much. Most of the themes were cast against the the Vietnam War and hippie generation. Also embedded were cultural differences between the parents raised in the 50s and their kids raised in 60s and how and turbulent and uncertain the times were. Both generations trying to navigate the new landscapes. As Gen-Xers we connected to the original show as we were seeing similar cultural changes in real time during the late 80s into the 90s. Can a setting of Alabama have enough widespread appeal and nuance? I Guess it remains to be seen

Christ almighty.
You don't have the first clue about me, my background, or the background of my predecessors.
Furthermore, the idea that you think I'm blind to the fact that my upbringing was different than that of someone else's, regardless of skin color, 53 years ago is just ludicrously stupid. Thanks for the revelation.
So many lazy, pre-packaged, soundbite retorts.

Perhaps you address the actual argument that the show sucked because it was a clubbing over the head of black victimhood and white privilege (an absolute asinine and racist term itself) rather than attempting to label me as some ignorant, angry racist?

I enjoyed it and thought it was well done. I just wish they would have left the big news event to later in the series' run.

the dad / coach fight was great and something everyone should be able to relate to
