I assume most everyone on here had the same experience I did back in school, and when you had a substitute teacher they would just wheel in the TV and show something family friendly they could loosely claim had educational value. Back in the 90s, the go to movie for any English substitute was "Dead Poets Society." I swear I watched that movie every year from junior high through high school. First time I saw it, I enjoyed it, but after seeing my entire teenage years, it got old. It also seemed like they enjoyed showing "The Princess Bride," I suppose because it had reading in it, it qualified as educational. What movies did your teachers show when they had a substitute or just didn't want to teach?

I remember a few from my elementary days in the early to mid '80's. These were all shown by regular teachers where they would pull multiple classrooms in together to watch them. I think they showed us each of these multiple years:

Gone with the Wind
The Happy Prince
Watcher in the Woods
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
Roots (a weird slide show version w/ the film audio)

Sounds like you had a damn good History teacher, but a crappy English teacher.

Had dual credit class M,W,F with extra "study hall" on Tuesday and Thursday. The teacher responsible never showed up on the non class days. Watched a lot of comedies like fast times at ridgemont, Tommy Boy and American Pie. Also watched braveheart and some other action movies. The fun ended when the class jackass got caught leaving campus in the middle of the day.

When I was in 7th or 8th grade, when we were done taking the TAAS/TAKS test or whatever it's called these days, our teacher threw in an unedited VHS tape of Gladiator.

I still remember what a momentous occasion that was to this day.

Also, that 60s Era Romeo and Juliet film where you get to see a bare chested Juliet. This was around the same time period. Good stuff.

First time I saw Ben-Hur was in my world history class.

Saw Silkwood in my civics class. That was about the time I found out that my aunt was in the same class as Karen Silkwood in Nederland.

I was a sub for a year about 10 years ago. Any time I covered for a coach's class, they left Remember the Titans for them to watch. I watched it 20 times in one school year

had an English teacher sophomore year in HS who showed us Blade 1 and Happy Gilmore, among others. He was an ex Oiler player. It was a bizarre, but obviously our favorite class. Not sure how he had a job,

I didn't realize they had a special version for schools. A while later I caught it on one of the movie channels and it caught me by surprise when the dude's head got blown off by a cannonball in the opening scene. That was definitely cut out of the school version.

We watched where the Red Fern Grows on the projector in the elementary school cafeteria a few dozen times. It must have been the only movie they had a film of. I remember when the school got one of the record size laser-disc players as well.

Ms. Beason was our favorite substitute. From 7th grade thru my junior year I watched Happy Gilmore about 40 times. Then she finally got sick of it and swapped it out for October Sky. Not necessarily a bad movie, but a 90 minute class period is just long enough for that movie to be the most pointless depressing exercise in futility and sadness ever.

One of my friends once made an impassioned plea to a longterm sub over the course of about 10 minutes in "environmental science" to let us watch the Steven Segal vehicle "Fire Down Below" because the subject matter was relevant to the class. He was unsuccessful, but i respected the effort and still do.
