Also, mindblown at the fact that the entire gunfight in Django was not in the script.

Listened to a good retelling of the debacles of making Superman 3 yesterday. Among the highlights.

  • They announced it was production even before Superman 2 was released, which was 100% false.
  • The original draft had Brainiac and Mr. Mytzlyplk was the villains, and a sequence where Superman and Brainiac jousted as medieval knights against each other.
  • Christopher Reeves threatened to sit out and the studio contemplated replacing him with Kurt Russell, John Travolta, Jeff Bridges, or TONY DANZA.
  • The Superman v. Clark Kent fight was one of the only things to make it to the actual movie, and they considered calling the film Superman vs. Superman, but feared they would be accused of ripping off Kramer vs. Kramer.
  • The studio saw Richard Pryor talk about his enthusiasm for Superman while he was on the tonight show in 1981 and that's the SOLE REASON they cast him.
  • Margot Kidder railed against every single thing in the movie so they had her on set for 5 days and then wrote her out of the movie.
  • Gene Hackman flat out refused to do it after reading the script so they made up another character. I can only assume Gene Hackman was broke a few years later since he was in Superman IV.
  • They were going to cast Dudley Moore as Mr. Mxyzptlk
  • Supergirl was going to be in the movie, and they were ret-conning it so she and Kal-El are not cousins so they could fall in love and get married
  • Christopher Reeve asked his elderly father to never watch this one or the fourth one.
  • Richard Pryor got paid $5 million. Reeves made $1 million. Pryor's salary is about $15.8 million in 2024 money.

From what I've read in F13, many TexAgs members would have been stopping the scene every 10 seconds asking if they had to keep touching and kissing this gross woman.

And none if them were super hero movies or existing film IP. Somehow Hollywood still made lots of money.

Shawshank tanked at the box office. It finished 51st with $28m, $500,000 behind In the Army Now with Pauly Shore.

Gump was #1 on the year and Pulp Fiction was #10, but everything else looks kind of familiar.

Big cast Disney Animated movie at #2 - The Lion King,
Action movie starring big action hero #3 - True Lies, #8 Speed
Previous TV show IP made into movie - #5 The Flintstones, #12 Maverick, #38 Richie Rich
NY Best Seller made into movie - Forrest Gump #1, #7 Clear and Present Danger, #11 Interview with the Vampire, #13 The Client, #14 Disclosure, #18 Legends of the Fall, #27 Little Women
Superhero movies: #9 The Mask, #24 The Crow, #43 The Shadow
Sequels to bloated franchises: #15 Star Trek Generations, #23 Naked Gun 33-1/3. #30 D2 the Mighty Ducks; #32 City Slickers 2; #34 Beverly Hills Cop 3, #45 Major League II

Took my daughter to a behind-the-scenes tour of Chimp Haven outside Shreveport over the weekend. They've got almost 300 animals there - 99% of them rescues from medical testing. On the tour they told us that they first new Planet of the Apes movie (Rise in 2011 with James Franco and the girl from the Jai Ho movie) had come out there and recorded their animals to be the animal noises of all the primates in the movie before they start learning to speak.

Shawshank was re released and made another 73 million, and made 100 million more from video and licensing. And it is still making money every time it's shown on cable.

So that's just over 200 million on a budget of 25 million in largely 1990's dollars, I'm gonna say it did more than ok.

At no point did it ever make another $73 million.

It's not worth fighting over, but the 73 million included the initial 16m and international BO.

"In the end, "Shawshank" grossed $16 million at the box office (on a $25 million budget), despite its critical acclaim. When it was rereleased again in early 1995 after its Oscar nominations, it grossed a total of $73 million $12 million domestically and $45 million internationally at the box office. Fox called "Shawshank" one of King's best adaptations. Even King himself stated in interviews it's one of his favorite adaptations of his work. "

The article is wrong. Multiple sources that do nothing but cover box office numbers confirm.
IT's still a fantastic movie, but it's OK to be wrong. It didn't even make $1 million internationally.
