It fascinates me, but doesn't surprise me, that people can't watch the doc without removing politics from it. At its core politics is at best the third or fourth most important thing being discussed in it. Behind internet freedom and what that means, who Q is, the impact of 8chan on violence, the soap opera that is Jim Ron and Fred, why people are willing to latch onto seemingly bizarre theories so completely, the psychology of ignoring how little actual factual info there is, the role of the bakers in being part of a self perpetuating story creation, and after all of that, then they barely touch on what q's views actually are, what it means to the right, why it resonates etc.
I will say again having gotten through episode four that the whole "who is Q"?" thing is a meaningless hook even if I understand why they did it. It doesn't matter though in the broader discussion, what matters is how movements like this start, what their dangers are, and how we combat them, regardless of ideology. There's not a compelling reason to think it's anybody important, there were dozens of similar online "sages". This one just happened to take off. No way a Bannon or Flynn etc could have known that this should be "the one" when it started. But maybe I'll be proven wrong at some point and Ron or someone helped a big name get heard.

Besides being the owner of the site where Q started, and being the father of the person who is most likely Q (not to mention could very well be Q himself or in cahoots with his son), he has absolutely nothing to do with Q. Jim was owner of 2chan, a massive image board in Japan. He was brought in by Fredrick to fund 8chan. 8chan was the third site that Q was on. Started on 4chan, moved to reddit, moved to 8chan.

I'm not even sure you watched the doc.

Watched ep 2. Ep 1 not on demand for some reason. I met Fred, Jim and Ron. They all deny being Q, and seem believable in doing so. It was a little slow, but I'm sure it picks up. I do recognize Ron as codemonkey, I remember that he got pretty active last year in tweeting out some Q-related stuff. They all seem pretty normal at this point, but I'm at the beginning, I'm sure that changes.

True story - Years ago I posted in F16 a bit. Liked the idea of seeing the POV from a different part of the country. Some dude (can't even remember who) was following me around, comparing my posts, at one point he accused me of being a sock (I didn't even know what that was at that point). Apparently he thought I was some known crazy person, a girl maybe if I remember right? And he got like 10 likes on that post, as if he had made some massive investigative discovery. And when I pointed out that I had posted here for years and wasn't a sock, instead of apologizing he blamed me for being hypocritical and inconsistent and making it look like that's what I was (for saying I voted for someone I didn't agree with 100 percent because they were the least worst choice) in my posts and got a whole bunch more likes. Rather than explain why all of that was crazy to a group that was out for blood, that was the end of my foray.
To her credit, Aggiehawg defended me a bit, but nothing from anyone else, especially the mods, so that was it. And it wasn't even a question of thin skin, and I don't care about that... it was just a ludicrous conversation, and seems to be the norm. Wasted energy.

Also, I find it funny you're crying about forum 13 being a safe space for pats on the back for having the "right" opinion when that's what forum 16 is on steroids. "Liberalism is a mental disease" gets you 80 blue stars there and here you're getting triggered that people are getting five blue stars for pointing out the people who fell for Q are dipsh/ts.

The GB used to be a lot of fun. Everyone was fair game, not much was sacred. It was a fun active board.

I don't know what happened by they neutered it and ran everyone off. I caught a ban for making a joke about someone being a terrible parent. So I figured it was best to avoid that board going forward.

Although it started to die long before, I think that when they killed off Laredo Heat that was the death knell that signaled the fun was over.

Death of the GB has been happening since it was formed. The 03ers killed it first in like 2000 when they were fish. Although, in retrospect, the virgin college freshman dude asking "what is spooning, is it a sex thing like fingering?" now seems pretty quaint.

General Board has definitely gotten wierder since being more heavily moderated. Used to be able to just make fun of stuff in a normal overt manner, but since threads like Larado Heat have been modded out of existence, the humor has had to get sneakier to avoid bans and deletions, which comes across as wierd sometimes. Makes sense if you experienced the style change as it happened because you understand how it got where it is, but I can see how it would appear to be a very strange community to a newcomer. Rule of thumb is to assume anything you see is intentional BS for entertainment/trolling purposes, and/or an inside joke of some sort. Take nothing seriously.
