I've been reading a lot about guitar pedal circuitry and building pedals and it's fascinating! Planning on picking up a breadboard soon and testing out some circuits. After, that I'll move on to building kits with PCBs. If that goes well, I'll start sourcing parts myself. Lots of resources and knowledge to soak up. Here's a breadboard kit with the jacks and an off/on switch built onto the board.

https://www.coppersoundpedals.com/shop/p/diy-breadboard

And then there are a lot of companies that sell DIY kits, such as AionFX.

https://aionfx.com/

Anybody build their own pedals?

I built one from StewMac. It was a ton of soldering, lol. I evidently had one bad solder joint somewhere, and I just haven't gone back and tested to find where it is. It doesn't work so I guess I was unsuccessful. The light works from the switch, but somewhere in the signal chain I have a bad solder. It was fun though.

Finally started the kit guitar I got last summer. Going for a yellow tinted lacquer on this one. Last guitar I left flat - this one I'm trying to get it shiny with the Mohawk instrument lacquer.

I was actually impressed by the neck. No fret sprouting and only two frets needed leveling. I'll post a picture when it's done next weekend, hopefully. Trying to decide between black and white pick guard, since I have them both. Going to go with cheap electronics since I'm most likely leaving this at my wife's store for display. (And so I can get it down and play it when I'm here in the future lol)

Has anyone else been enjoying this series??? I bought the booklet, but haven't received it yet (although I assumed it was a digital download, guess I'll have to wait & see!)

Thanks Dave for finding it for it!

Long shot, but new (to somebody) guitar at one point…

Does anyone know the song at 7:30. Sounds very familiar but nothing is clicking.

I'm a few lessons in and have been enjoying it. I really like his teaching style and the 90s vibe is great.

You should have been redirected to the download page after purchasing the guide. I don't think I ever got an email with the download link. Shoot ne a PM and I can point you in the right direction.

Finished this up this morning. Well, except for adjusting the action and doing the intonation. I didn't change any parts out from the kit. I had to fix it before going to kid stuff this afternoon, so haven't been able to test out the electronics, other than if they work or not.

Yep, he immediately responded and attached the document. I'm on lesson 5 right now, it's really well thought out and thorough.

That's great! So cool he put out the 32 hours of content on YouTube. I'm going to print out the guide. Lots of great reference material in there.

I've been watching this thread for years because I've always loved guitars and music but had never gotten into trying to learn to play. Finally took the plunge! Didn't want to go overboard on gear so ended up with a Squier Tele from Sweet Water (guess it sees tw*t if you don't split that apart LOL) and then picked up the amp for a great deal on marketplace. If any of you guys and gals have any recommendations on YouTube channels for lessons I'd love to know about them! I'm brand new to this so I will fully understand I'm not going to be Freddie King anytime soon LOL

Solid choice for an amp. Boss Katanas are amazing for the price.

I would honestly recommend in person guitar lessons and to begin learning chords. Because you are older and more mature, I would also recommend studying "music theory". Whether it be online, YouTube, etc. but I think enrolling in a music theory course at a local community college is the way to go and fully appreciate that guitar and new found art. I didn't start learning about this stuff until decades after I started playing but wow does it make playing so much more fun and easier to play.

Spend the time upfront laying the foundation down through guitar lessons, learning chord progressions, studying the fret board and learning some songs.

Welcome to the community. Like I said, that is a great guitar and amp combo, an experienced player will make those two instruments sound like Jimmy Page so no need to rush into buying the most expensive gear on the planet right now.

Most of all, HAVE FUN!!! Go to some local concerts and tiny venues, talk to the bands and guitar players after the shows and ask them questions about their setups and rigs. Make this a fun journey.

Gratz! Welcome to the world of guitar!

Are you only new to guitar or are you new to music completely? I have never taken a guitar lesson in my life, but I took piano lessons for 4 years when I was younger. I already understood many basics about scales, chords within those scales and how they relate to each other.

Honestly, when you're first starting out, doing a few in person lessons wouldn't hurt to get down some very basic techniques without forming bad habits.

It also all comes down to what your ultimate goal is. I'm a fan of learning chords and scales through learning songs. Sitting down and learning the C major scale, memorizing what chords are in C major, and practicing moving from each chord in C major to the other is boring. Instead, learn Simple Man. By learning that song, you learn several of the chords in C major and how they relate to each other, you learn how to move between chords, you learn arpeggios, and eventually your C scale when you get to the solo.

I personally don't think you need to know any theory before learning your first song. I'm sure you picked up the guitar to have fun. Learning to play a song you love is what makes guitar fun.

Never put the guitar in its case. If you want to learn to play, that guitar should always be in view reminding you to pick it up.

Don't be discouraged. Guitar has a decent beginner hump because it's so alien to learn to hold down those strings and move your hand around while simultaneously trying to keep strings you don't want from ringing. It will take time to get used to this.

Wow thank you both for the suggestions I really appreciate your input and thoughts! I would like to take some in person lessons I do think that would keep me from forming bad habits at the start before getting too deep into it. My goal with this is purely fun. I have no desires to play in a band this is for fun to jam out at home and with some friends who are also getting into playing. I did take piano lessons as a kid but I have zero recollection of that hahah it was 40 years ago so I'm basically starting from scratch. Any chance any of you guys know of any people in the DFW area for lessons? I know I can google some but would be blindly guessing as to who is a good teacher so I'm open to suggestions if anyone happens to be in DFW that you know about.

Congrats on joining the community, we're excited to have you! In terms of lessons, I haven't found a more thorough and well thought out program than this:

It starts off very basic, but truth be told, there is no shortcuts in guitar….so take your time and enjoy the ride!

You and friends will have a blast. Especially when you play together. There's a certain moment when everyone is locked in and playing the same jam and everyone just looks at each other and smiles with excitement.

Not in Austin by any chance are you?

Hope life is treating you well. I'd like to make amends with you.

I'm in sobriety now and experiencing life in a much better state of mind. I just wanted to apologize for my actions and things said towards you in the past. You don't have to forgive me but I just wanted to reach out personally and try and make things right. I know you have me blocked but maybe someday you'll read this.

I have a Line 6 Helix and it is rock solid (but so is the cost). I've never put together my own stomp box set, so can't attest to how a digital all in one box measures up to multiple analog pedals.

Guitar build is slow and steady. Mainly on the smaller details. I cut a custom aluminum pick guard because I didn't want the top covered up. Also some matching pale moon ebony volume and tone knobs. Similar matching switch knob is in development.

For all the dads with small babies and and kids……and the office!

This is on my auto-buy list. Yes I could just plug my headphones into my Spark but I want to try it out…..for research. I'll be the group tester.
