That seems low for a 2-3 year player. When you say package, what do you mean? Guitar and amp?

I'd spend $400-$500 on just the guitar.

A $200-$300 guitar might have intonation issues and not stay in tune that well, and is what a first time player should be getting.

He has a 45-minute lesson and then 45 minutes with kid band once a week. He doesn't play much outside of that. I think that's why they recommended the low end.

and yes package includes amp...

I need recommendations for a 10 year-old first electric guitar.
He's been playing acoustic 2-3 years now at home.
He plays electric at lessons.
Guitar Center recommended some package that cost about $300.

$500 for a much more pricey guitar normally. I almost bought one of these when I was looking for my first electric. The one I tried played great! And online reviews on YouTube were very complimentary.

As said above, spend a little more and get a guitar he won't have to fight. Don't get a Squier pack with a little amp and guitar and stand and accessories.

I've never owned a Schecter but I have heard great things about them. I almost pulled the trigger on one a while back, but barely missed the sale.

I played a schecter C1 all through high school and college, and it was an excellent guitar. Really good value

I got a Tama Starclassic sitting in the garage. It's fun as hell to jam out on. I need to practice more because I'm stiff and have trouble holding a steady tempo.

Any recommendations or YouTube channels?

Finally unboxed the Blem Xaviere guitar I bought on Black Friday. It's actually really nice looking. I still have to change the strings and do a basic setup on it, but I couldn't find the blem. I thought it said "back side of body" - wasn't there on inspection. Then, when I was running my hand down the back of the neck checking the fret ends, my finger got impaled by a sliver of cracked finish. Ouch. Lol. It got stuck in my finger. So…maybe I misread it and it said blem in the neck finish. That's a new challenge I haven't had - but I think it will be fine. Still a good looking guitar and the GFS pickups sound pretty good to me.

Also, yes, my room is a mess. Somehow it's the "store all the Christmas presents room" so all my stuff has been pushed onto my work table.

If this isn't a message from God…..I've been on fb marketplace and reverb all day looking for a PRS.

Beautiful guitar!

Here's another message. A maroon CE that just dropped another $300.

Read that as an "SE just dropped 300".

Was hoping to get it for free.....

The old CEs are really solid for the price. All the same hardware as a the American made models, just a bolt on version with no birds. This one being a stoptail is semi-rare.

The newer CEs when they brought them back have a shallower top carve and the bridge/tuners are what they use on the SEs.

Yeah, as others have said, I would spend much more than $300 for a guitar and amp for someone who has been playing guitar for that long. However, only you can tell us if it's a hobby he truly enjoys.

Guitars are also a very personal thing. Reviews and recommendations from others are irrelevant, unless you are talking about objective aspects. For Christmas in 2005, my dad did it right for my first mid-range guitar. I came home from my first semester in college, and my dad surprised me by taking me to the large Guitar Center in Dallas to go guitar shopping. That allowed us to look together, and allowed me to play several models. Strangely enough, I ended up choosing a Schecter S-1 Elite.

However, I didn't actually get the guitar until Christmas morning.

Kind of funny now, because I wish I had gone with a Les Paul Special, but I was 18 and went with what looked cool for an 18 year old.

If your son doesn't see his guitar and love how it looks, he will not pick it up as much as he will if he loves the way his guitar looks. It also needs to feel great in his hands. Everyone has different preferences on neck thickness, scale length, etc.

ETA: The Schecter my dad bought me was $650 at the time, brand new. That was considered "mid-range" and still only came with Duncan Designed pickups, so they were cheap and eventually needed to be replaced.

If he's not opposed to the idea, buying used guitars is the way to go. You will pay 50-70% the price of a new guitar, giving you even better options. For example, I recently bought a Fender Custom Shop Telecaster that would probably cost me $4,500-$5,000 new. On Reverb, the guy I bought it from accepted $2,800 for it.

No problem! Couple of other things that came to mind:

Remembering that trip to Guitar Center with my dad just reminded me how special that was for me. Because guitar is something I grew to love so much and later collect, that trip to buy a little $650 guitar was very special to me (I still own it). So a great memory to have with your son. When you buy a Gibson, the Gibson owners manual specifically states that you have purchased a thing that will outlive you. Guitars are works of art that you get to actually use to gain even more satisfaction than simply looking at them.

The reason we have this thread on TexAgs is because New Guitar Day truly is a special day for all of us. Sharing that day with your son can be a very special situation.

As for foreign made guitars, you can find a very well made guitar from just about anywhere, but usually Mexico and Korea are your best foreign made, followed by Indonesia, and then China. But again, you can find a great instrument at any price range. Some just may eventually require some hardware swaps or some additional love and setup to make them play better. Each guitar is made of wood. No two guitars are exactly the same, so playing the one you choose is a good thing to do.

This is right on! I still remember when my wife (fianc at the time) took me to guitar center to pick out my dream guitar, it's a Gibson Les Paul standard with the premium plus cherry burst top. Absolutely beautiful guitar. That was almost 20 years ago and still cherish that guitar. I had the same experience with my daughter last summer when she picked out her PRS S2 custom 22. She wasn't sure what she wanted (she had been learning on my Fender Strat) and once she saw and played that PRS, she knew it was the one. She loves it and is now trying to talk us into getting her a Gibson Explorer for her graduation gift in a couple years lol.

Going to shed a tear in here.

I remember my dad taking me to guitar center for my first guitar.

Picked up a BC Rich Warlock Bronze Edition and red mini amp. Still have them both. My dad enjoyed seeing me play at talent shows and battle of the bands. Great times.

I got my oldest daughter a Ibanez Gio when I was assigned in South Korea. I even put it in the shipping container with some bulk items and it made it back in one piece!

I don't think $650 qualifies as a "little guitar" for your first guitar. That's absurd!

Most kids will be happy from the experience alone. A $100 is already a stretch for some people.

Used prices are dropping pretty hardcore right now. I'll be curious when or if new prices start to come back down.
I think this is all the Covid guitar purchases getting sold because they stopped playing them. People who aren't addicted to buying new guitars getting rid of them.

Hopefully new guitars drop in price soon, too.

Great insight.

And I'm literally seeing prices lower and new used guitars on secondary markets everyday now. People are offloading those Covid investments. I think I'm going to hold off on a guitar for a bit until I see a steal!

Finally got to play the Custom 24 through my amp. I'm lukewarm on the PRS #6 pickups so those may go, but there is definitely a bit of a scratch when adjusting the volume with the neck pickup. Not sure if that's an issue with the pot or a bad connection. It needs new strings so I'm probably going to pull the pickups and take a look at the MODCAT sticker in the cavities and see what that says and then look at the wiring and the trem cavity. Little bit of a bummer with the pickups but those can be swapped easily enough.

In terms of the way it feels playing it, it's quite nice and all the rest can be handled.

What are your thoughts on an entry PRS.

I wanted some birds on my fret board and to play with a tremolo
