I am going to have some down time coming up and have tried once or twice to pick up guitar but haven't stuck with it. Decided to give it one more try and picked this guy up.

if you don't like playing on a martin then you probably won't like playing

It's not a Little Martin. It's a full size X series, just not a dreadnought.

Has anyone here ever built a DIY kit, like Stewmac's kits? I'd be interested in building a Tele style guitar, just as a winter project.

I'd rather purchase through warmoth so I could select the woods and such.

This site is really cool. I like being able to pick exactly what I want. Thanks again.

I built a Wilkinson modern T (tele style) through stewmac over the summer. It turned out pretty good, though the neck isn't my favorite. I would say it's better than a squier, but doing it again I would probably just drop the coin on a player series and be out slightly more money but a lot less time. Thats it in front (ignore the mess of cords and the kids bowl, lol)

If you are wanting to build a more premium guitar, I think you could get more for your money with a partscaster selecting each component.

Thanks! It's more about doing something with my hands, rather than a budget consideration. I live up north, so I have a long winter ahead of me and building something would be fun.

I built one that I bought off of Amazon. Replaced a bunch of parts on it and it's not too bad. I still need to replace the nut, but I've been lazy for the past few months. I'm at work and don't have the picture on me, but it's farther up in the thread. It was a lot of fun. I have another one waiting on me, but I'm just too busy with kids' stuff, Aggie football, and work. I'll probably work on it if we take a break from baseball over Christmas time.

I'm considering a similar project for a Nocaster-ere Tele. I'm not a woodworker, so I won't be carving the body and don't really want to try my hand at painting / finishing yet.

For the body, I've been looking at Guitar Mill and MJT bodies / necks. I like the idea of a relic'd body and both do that pretty well.

I'm still exploring all the bits and pieces. I'm considering Callaham, but it's pricey.

Fun project to do no less!

Just got my Schecter Ultra, man what a pretty guitar, and super comfortable. I was planning on hitting up drum city guitarland next week but as it turns out the days I had time for it they're closed. I was a little worried about ordering without playing since it is an odd shape, but Holy cow it feels so nice

Played around with this last night. One song had 20 different chords in it. Those guys knew all the chords at a pretty early age and they weren't afraid to use them!

No kidding! Here's this '59. Here's this '60 that's faded to a lemon.

I do like how he told the cameraman that he could play Greeny if he wanted to.

This is interesting. I'm not crazy about the guitar but just past the 8-minute mark Tim starts talking about the advantage of the reverse headstock.

He says it makes bends easier and gives the lower strings a more piano-like tone because it's further to the tuning key and extends the length of the string.

Maybe Rick Beato will see this and discuss it on his channel and do a comparison with all his gear hooked up to analyze frequencies like they did when they compared string gauges.

I love that guitar. It's so different than what I have. I wanted to pick up a Jaguar just because they look different and I love messing with different sounds (also why I'm probably not as good as I would like, since I spend way too much time screwing around with sounds lol).

Now I want to buy a squier classic vibe jaguar and a left handed fender neck.

Just in time for Christmas. My wife thanks you for posting this so I can add another item "I don't need" to it (and inevitably buy myself since I haven't received anything on my Christmas list for like 15 years).

What's everyone's thoughts on Hal Leonard? The tab books have typically been good in my experience but I pulled out the Trans Siberian one I got a few years ago and one of the tabs has the tuning as Standard except the high E is tuned up to F# which is really only done because there's a note at the end that is only playable in Standard by bending like crazy or having a 24 fret guitar. Just seemed like an odd choice to make set such an odd tuning over one note when that's not even how it was recorded. Made me wonder if they've done random stuff like that on other songs.

I have a rhythm book and a soloing book I use for lessons.

It has some typos now and then.

Today's been a bit of a guitar day for me. So, one thing I've never quite gelled with on my green Tele is the fretboard edges. This was a NOS custom shop, so it's basically like new, not even a bit of relicing or wear. Though the frets were very well done, the fretboard itself had absolutely no rounding to the edge.

Been afraid to mess too much with it, but I don't ever see me selling this guitar, and I wanted to address my biggest issue with it. I've rounded fretboard edges in the past with a razorblade, but I wanted a little more of a worn in feel versus a simple rounding.

Found a great video where the guy basically got the finest grit sandpaper, rolled it into a tight roll, and then ran it back and forth across the edge of the board. This not only rounded the fretboard, but also started to round off the fret end edges as well, which is something the razorblade method doesn't do. Well, I did that to my tele, and the result is fantastic! Because I used 0000 paper, it was a process that took a bit, but was good because it's so hard to mess it up by overdoing it. Now the fretboard edge feels so comfortable to play on. Definitely happy I finally gave this a shot.

One thing you do have to be careful about is the angle you use with the paper roll. If you angle it too much, you can start to increase the fret edge gradient, which can remove a little off the top of the fret, giving you less space for your string until it hits the end of the fret.

Nice! I thought rolling the fret board edges was something that a lot of places did so that sounds like a great way to handle that.

Is there something off about this guitar? Especially the headstock?

Hi guys, what is your opinion on a 920D Tele? I was looking at one today which is ID'd as a custom shop designed, but production guitar. Price is right for me. Had good tone, bass was strong and reminded me of the tele I used to play years ago (before most of y'all were born)...

It is the blonde in the middle in the photo below:

Thanks, RF '83

I'm confused... is this just a partscaster? I don't know what a 920D is. When I google that, it looks like it's a company that makes pickups and control harnesses.

So, it's a Fender body that someone has modded?

I mean... if you like it then it's worth what you're willing to pay for it. I would never pay that for a partscaster. Don't expect it to hold much value, if you ever want to sell it.

ETA: Oh, and the parts are from a Mexican Tele. Yeah, I wouldn't pay over $700 for something like that.

I think those are Danny Gatton designed pickups. Going price is about right though.

Thank you Lath and Dave. Salesperson told me it was a custom shop designed guitar, but manufactured by Fender as a standard model. On the back at the heel of the neck the plate says 920D in large lettering (see photo below from Dave's post). It has the look of a production guitar.

I also see the 920D kits, but that does not seem the same to me.
