Definitely start there for acoustics in Houston, there's no better shop for selection and quality. Large collection of Taylor, Gibson, Epiphone, Martin, Takamine, Collings, etc. Excellent shop, not fancy but you'll be able to try loads of instruments.

To that end I'd also check where the battery is. My Seagull has the battery in a bag velcroed to the side of the inside of the body. It's not the end of the world to change it, but it's a bit of a pain if you're not changing strings. My Takamines have battery boxes which is infinitely better.

Haha epic. I'm really going to have to try to keep myself open minded and not jump straight to the big names for something like this:

Definitely look at Fuller's Guitar. They have a great selection of guitars, and are very helpful. At Fuller's, you can usually negotiate at least 10% off the listed price.

Walk in there, and say you are looking for guitars below $2,000. Play several. If you find one that speaks to you, the you've got it.

Thanks for the tips!

I'll probably start this weekend at Guitar Center down on my side of town. I'm in Needville, so need a good few hours to make a trip up to Fullers. Maybe start to get a better feel for what I'm looking for then go to Fullers.

Looking to upgrade from a hand me down ovation that's getting worn out from strumming chords at church. Been looking at Taylors, but I also see that the Seagull S6 may be the best bang for my buck. What do you experts think?
On a related note - I do want to get my Ovation (1527 Ultra, I think from the 80s) running well again. I for sure need some worn down frets replaced. I assume there are better and worse places to have that kind of work done?

I had the guy at Rockin' Robin do a setup and fret leveling on my PRS acoustic and it was good work and reasonably priced. Lord knows they can use the business.

Fuller's will get suggested here.

And there is a guy on Washington or somewhere in that area that I saw mentioned here for electric guitar work. Don't know if he does acoustic but someone will chime in and let us know.

That's Neil Sargent, off Washington. Literally 2 blocks from my house.

He is usually booked out for a while though. He does both electric and acoustic.

Haha, I've been always parking in front Neil Sargent's when going to Ninja Ramen & didn't even know it was there. Lived near Washington forever & haven't even heard of Fuller's until this thread (been going to GC off Yale).

I've been a Taylor player for many years, so I'm bias. But I think they make some of the most comfortable acoustics in the business. They have a size for everyone, and their necks are so easy to play.

The Seagull S6 is a decent guitar, but I'm not sure it's much of an upgrade from your Ovation. It has laminated wood back and sides - which isn't the same as a solid wood guitar. Of course, it's in the $600 range so you'll definitely save some money there. But if your budget is closer to $2,000 I would at least go play some solid-wood guitars in that range to see how you like the sound - because the quality is going to be better.

The American Dream series from Taylor is their baseline solid-wood options and they really have a lot of value for the wood combinations they offer:
Taylor AD17e
Taylor AD14e
Taylor AD24e
Taylor AD27e all Mahogany
Taylor AD27e all Maple (I have this one and it's a great bang for the buck)

Fuller's Guitar has the best selection of Taylors in Houston if you're looking to go try a few out.

I bought a Taylor 324ce over 4 years ago, and think it is an amazing guitar. Definitely very easy to play, and the intonation is amazing. I was looking for something around $2,000, as well, and landed on this one.

Granted, my acoustic knowledge is not very deep compared to my electric knowledge.

Furch. Well known brand in Europe made in the Czech Republic. Amazing build quality. Great story about how the company was started in the guy's basement under Communism risking prison. Sinker Redwood top, Walnut back and sides. Lovely warm, rich midtones and bass.

That's at Heartbreaker Guitars in Vegas. Great selection of most boutique guitar builders.

Heartbreaker's guitar has a very active YouTube channel and Jace there is an excellent player. Worth a watch.

Biggest surprise of the day was how good that McPherson carbon fiber guitar hanging on the wall on the left sounded. Might be my next purchase.

Nice!

I visited Heartbreaker a couple of years ago. I'm glad I called ahead - I didn't know its typically a by reservation only store. I auditioned several Larrivee's and Furch's but my wife wasn't swayed by my sad face to let me purchase.

Jace was a very nice kid. It was intimidating playing with him in the same room - he's a badass player.

To the RWB guitars in an earlier post. I've never been a fan but might not pass an opportunity to purchase one of the 6 of these if it arises again. Beautiful tribute to the old Harmony F-70.

Staff - take out the trash.

So, I've had issues with my phone's camera for a couple weeks but got that resolved. I bought this beauty a couple weeks back and have been playing it non-stop. I had the other two strats but opted to sell them. Still waiting on a good offer because I'm in no rush and not taking low ball offers.

There's just something about this Strat that the other two didn't have. The pictures do not do the darkness of the fretboard justice. This is up there as one of my best fretboards across all my guitars, and the fretwork and rounding on the fretboard is top notch. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but the neck has light figuring across its entirety. This is a Journeyman relicing, so the entire body has those spiderweb cracks, but the neck is only very lightly worn in, but not all the way to the wood.

I know some people are dead set against relic'ed guitars, and that's their prerogative, but damn, this guitar plays and sounds amazing.

Also, I need to make another plug for my Vahlbruch Kaluna pre-amp pedal. I have basically been using this since I bought it and have never turned it off. This is the best overdrive/distortion i've ever used, and I really don't see the need for any of the other pedals on my board.

Finally got the 59/09 pickups installed. Everything puts out sound, but I need to hear it through my amp and not my iPad. Couldn't really do that last night.
