You want an inexpensive guitar with active pickups to shred on.

A $500 Schecter with EMG's, and it's maroon no less!!!

I'm not sure how you can find something more appropriate.

If you don't like the Floyd, block it.

The technology & precision engineering of the Fishmans are incredible -- at some point I'll have them in my next guitar, The only downside is having to replace batteries in the guitar. If someone could invent a guitar cable/jack with a power-line to a DC supply near the amp that would be a game changer.

For now, I'm happy with my passive DiMarzio Tone Zone for metal/prog-rock.

If you're looking for a metal guitar, the Ibanez's are good. I found I increased my speed from their neck profile (they are the thinnest) over my PRS. I like their Edge tremolo -- stays in tune no matter how wild the whammy bar is used.

Yeah I really love the Fishmans and the artist roster is such that they can really cover any style.

Both of my Fishman loaded guitars actually have an ion battery pack in the cavity that can be charged via USB. Game changer not having to keep batteries on hand at all times.

Ooh. Yeah. I played an Ibanez Prestige and the neck was just lovely.

Just looked again and that Schecter is off the board. But the same store has this Ibanez.

Thought this might help the group on setting up an acoustic:

I thought shredders were supposed to have 7 or 8 strings?

Okay... this may end up being a long post, but it's something I've had questions about. I don't have a personal friend who is a CPA to ask these questions to, so throwing it at you guys.

For those who have sold on Reverb lately, you should know they are being forced by the government to start gathering tax info from individuals like myself to report sales (gonna keep my personal feeling on politics and government out of this).

My initial reaction was one of immense frustration that now I'm going to have to think about my sells not only being hit by the 5-8% by reverb, but also that 25-30% from the government when I do my taxes. However, after actually thinking about it, isn't the following true?

If the IRS views my sells of guitars on Reverb as a side business, then wouldn't the original purchase of that guitar, any upgrades/changes to the guitar, and a new set of strings be considered costs against that sell?

If that's true, and I purchased a guitar off Reverb for $1,800, did a $220 pickup swap, and put a set of $13 strings on it, then sold it for $1,700, wouldn't I claim a $333 loss on my taxes, plus the Reverb fee?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Are you hitting $20k in sales? If not I think you're good.

But to your question, yes I think you'd deduct the purchase price and the taxable portion would be anything you made over the original purchase price. I get 1099s from a few places for gigs and I deduct mileage and gear costs from that.

I have a friend who is a CPA. It's busy time for her now but I'll send your post to her and see what she says.

I'm with you though. They can't just play one side of it.

It sucks. Like anything (a car, for example) you are taxed when you buy it and taxed when you sell it.

It never stops.

I guess that answers it.

I see that, but they have been sending notices out that they will start requiring your tax info before remitting any payments over $600. I think this may be a 2024 thing. Either that, or maybe things have changed since they first announced it.

Also, if the IRS views my selling of guitars/amps/pedals to be a "side business", then wouldn't any purchase along those lines be considered "stock", and therefore a write off? I own over $30K in musical equipment, so that would be nice, lol.

I think they're wanting to have it now so they don't have to try and chase you down for it when it comes into play and there's no way to make you give it to them.

Okay... appreciate the input from yall on my last question. I'm also drinking my Saturday morning coffee and enjoying guitartube/Reverb/other guitar stuff, and came across this post: https://www.tdpri.com/threads/degaussing-or-aging-alnico-pole-pieces.805766/#:~:text=The%20trick%20is%20to%20take,seconds%2C%20then%20lift%20it%20away.

Anyone ever tried this before? I ask because there is just something magical about my Gold Tele with the relic'ed Handwound '63 telecaster pickups that my Green tele with the same handwound '63 pickups doesn't necessarily have. Don't get me wrong, I love the Green tele. It has a MUCH more pronounced upper mid range as opposed to my Gold tele, which cuts through a bit better when playing more modern rock.

The differences between the two guitars are:

Body wood
  • Gold - very light swamp ash (like, ridiculously light. my lightest guitar)
  • Green - standard weight alder
Relic job
  • Gold - Super heavy relic (honestly ugly as hell, but feels amazing in your hands)
  • Green - NOS (absolutely no relicing)
Fretboard
  • Gold - AAA flat rosewood
  • Green - AAA lam rosewood
Pickups
  • Gold - relic'ed handwound '63 Tele pickups
  • Green - handwound '63 Tele pickups

ETA: Forgot to add, another reason I was thinking about this is because i've been playing the crap out of my new Strat with the relic'd pickups from Fender, and loving that sound so much.

Here is the scoop on the 1099K reporting:

Quote:

The IRS will treat 2023 as a transition year.
  • For the 2024 tax year (returns normally filed in early 2025), the agency says it's planning a $5,000 1099-K reporting threshold.
  • The $5,000 number is seen as a phase-in to implementing the $600 reporting threshold enacted in the American Rescue Plan.

https://www.kiplinger.com/taxes/irs-1099-k-tax-change-for-online-selling

There is some effort in congress to raise the threshold either permanently to $5k/year or up to $10k or $20k/year with a minimum number of transactions. It was 200 transactions for a total of $20k in a year before 2022. With 2024 being an election year, there are plenty of pols who need to score some points to keep their seats, so I am a little optimistic...

BTW, the $600 threshold would also apply to gig work, so if you are working at multiple gigs throughout the year and making over the threshold, then that amount would be owed. Kinda like tip income, not sure the government has a way to hunt you down over it as long as it is not over the threshold at any one place.

Also, as far as buying and selling gear, if you are selling gear that you still have receipts for and didn't make a profit, there would not be a taxable event. If you are making money selling the gear, then you can treat this like a business, but would need to do some of the paperwork like creating a DBA (Doing Business As) at your local County office, and keeping track of your books to write off any of your expenses.

For the activity to not be considered a hobby, you would have to be profitable (i.e. pay taxes) on the business three out of five years or be able to justify that you are putting in the effort to grow a business. In other words, the years that you don't show a profit are counted as a loss which can be deductible on your taxes, but you have to make some profit every now and then otherwise it is simply a hobby. The deductible items include purchase of a vehicle, a van, guitar, gear, etc. which might decline in value, your mileage, travel expenses, etc. etc.

Hope this helps. I am not an accountant, but have had my own side businesses and main business enough times that these are the things I have learned along the way. Best thing to do is find a CPA and discuss in an intro meeting and see if he/she can help you.

Most places just pay cash. At least for solo acoustic. I only get a 1099 from a few. I'll definitely show a loss for this year after buying a new PA.

Most of the musicians I know only do taxes so far as it benefits them. As some have gotten older they're starting to declare their income so they can get loans and stop living like drug dealers.

I've got a new project on the way-

So, for the longest time I've wanted to get a Starla SE and either add a middle single coil pickup, or possibly get a custom pickguard made to use three single coils. I found a Starla husk on Stratosphere's eBay page not too long ago. Well today they sent me an offer to sell it with a discount, so I couldn't resist. So the husk will be here in a few days. I also have a standard pickguard coming.

WRT the pickup configuration I'll likely be going with EMGs, so I'm thinking a set of coil-splittable 89s with an S middle pickup, coupled with push-pull pots for the 89s, would be very versatile. That's assuming I can't find a source to make a custom guard w/ three single coils. My luthier can rout the middle pickup slot on a standard pickguard. So it all depends on the availabilty of a custom cut pickguard. If I can have a custom pickguard made, I'll go with the three EMG SA or SL set.

You gonna keep it black?

Looking to upgrade from a hand me down ovation that's getting worn out from strumming chords at church. Been looking at Taylors, but I also see that the Seagull S6 may be the best bang for my buck. What do you experts think?

Anywhere up to ~$2k but if something in the lower half of that was nearly as good as something at the top of the range, that's probably the route I'd take.

I'm no expert but you need to go try a bunch of guitars and see what speaks to you. How does it feel, is the size of the guitar right for you, and how does it sound?

I played a $2500 Martin at a GC in the acoustic room one day. It did nothing for me. A more experienced player was in there and he tried it as well and we both talked about how it just didn't do it for us.

A poster on another forum I visit sometimes said he grabbed a $600 Takamine at a shop in his town and was amazed by it but he had some bias about the name on the headstock.

He thought about it for a few weeks and decided to go back and get it. Someone had bought it. He said it played and sounded better than more expensive guitars he tried.

That being said, I've played Seagulls I liked and of course Taylor makes great instruments, but being able to play a few first would help you decide.

Appreciate it. Seagull and Taylor were in mind as two brands to try. Whenever I go, I won't have all day to explore, so trying to do some research in advance and make sure wherever I go has some candidate models in stock.

Seagull and Taylor are two great options. Seagull is definitely more the bargain brand, but mostly because they're just a no thrills kind of option. I've got two currently and have owned others.

I'd also take a look at Takamine in that price range.

I will say if you're going the acoustic-electric route, the Seagulls are definitely inferior when it comes to their preamps. That's really my only complaint with the ones I have.

Are you located somewhere with several music stores to choose from?

If you are in Houston, you can go spend some time in Fullers as they have a wide selection of acoustics for you to dip your toes into. With that kind of budget, nothing is off limits to you.

To speak to the points that are listed above me here, my dad's acoustic guitar is a "conqueror" brand and the thing is basically a perfect instrument as far as I can see. Tone is rich and precise action is low-medium so there are never issues with intonation.

It was a $200 guitar in the 80's.

Play them all and it will come to you.

That's helpful to know. I do play plugged in and prefer acoustic electric to messing with electronics afterward. Definitely something to ask about both here and at the shop.
