Maybe if you didn't insist on low-output pickups…

It's probably going to have to wait for the weekend. I've got some work tonight. I also want to go get a switch so I don't have to clip the quick connect off the one that came in it if I do sell it at some point. I'll probably solder some extensions on the neck pickup tomorrow.

That's what amps are for! I also use my volume and tone knobs in many different ways. You don't get the same dynamics with high output pickups as you do low output when using the knobs on your guitar.

Bought a three way switch earlier and wasn't paying attention. It has three prongs on both sides. What the hell did I buy? Definitely was more expensive than I thought.

No matter what you post, every single pic has a lot of blue in it.

Can I guess your favorite color?

2019 Gibson LP Classic

Straight factory and I love the tone. My two biggest genres to play is blues and metal. I think this axe plays both those well. I'm into thrash as well. And when watching old Metallica footage from the 80s, I notice Gibson was there preference before going to ESP AND EMG pick-Ups.

If I want that 80s sounds, should I just leave this LP stock and play with pedals and amps? Or if I truly want that old Metallica sounds, should I replace the pick-ups with something else?

Thanks guys

I'd leave it. Especially since you're playing more than one style. You should be able to get what you need out of it as is. Hammett is playing that Greeny LP a lot now.

I should have read better. It's a toggle for three pickups. That explains the price. Guess I need to run back to the store tomorrow and return it.

Doing a string change on the acoustic. Broke my high E string.

Going to condition the fretboard after I clean it a bit.

These frets are going to need some work in the future! They have some indentions.

Also used my new Fret Rocker just to check for frets that aren't level, as if I know what I'm doing.

5th and 8th are a little high.

Saving that project for the next string change. Not getting into that today.

Those aren't that bad. I wouldn't worry about leveling frets unless you are experiencing issues with fret buzz or intonation.

Use other voicings of those chords! =P

No fret buzz yet!

I think TeleAg is the only one here who will encourage you to swap out pups but we're talking about a guy that will modify his custom shops.

To be honest, I'm just kind of jealous that you're good enough for it to make a difference. Someday…

There is a huge difference when swapping pickups.

How much of a guitar's sound is the pickups and how much is the wood, the neck, etc?

Does the quality of the guitar affect the playability, i.e. the string height, intonation, fret finish/feel etc, and the pickups affect the sound?

It all plays a part.

Whether one thing is "better" than another is completely subjective.

Anyone who says tonewood isn't real is just short of hearing.

Any of y'all used this before?

Talking to a guitar tech before my lesson yesterday. We were talking all sorts of guitar maintenance and he said he recently started using this cloth that has coconut oil in it (and something else, according to the website).

Said he uses it for cleaning and conditioning and it works better than anything he has used. And that he just cut a strip off the main cloth and it has lasted a long time.

Reviews are good. Maybe not suitable for all woods and finishes but works for most.

I'm interested.

Is saw a video the other day with new gadgets and accessories.

One was a little gadget you put inside the cavity where your tremolo strings are located and it can connect to your tremolo block and keep it in place while you do a string change or you can keep your trem blocked using this gadget.

Now I can't remember what YouTube channel had that video!

I remember that video. I also know I've put the same set of pickups on different guitars and they sound different.

On top of that, Andertons has some great videos where Chapman would do blind plays of different woods, fretboards, etc. He pretty much guesses everything 100%. Lee, however, does not guess everything correctly.

I simply believe it comes down to the player's ear. Everyone hears differently and can recognized different tonal qualities over others. There are people out there who could never tell you one of your guitar strings is out of tune by 30 cents. There are others out there, many in my family, who will yell at you from the other room if you are 4 cents sharp/flat.

Got my extensions soldered on. Now I need to get back to the shop and get the right switch and I'll be good to go.

quick update on my bass because I forgot to last week. I got it back from the shop two weeks ago I think? The new neck and set up plays great. Just as good, if not better than the original. I highly recommend stratosphere on EBAY if any parts are needed.

That was actually one of the eBay sellers I was thinking of. They've always got a good selection.

So I've been thinking of getting a new guitar completely different than anything I have. I want one for playing metal. Just a fun shredder. Any recommendations? I'll admit I have never looked at prices on some of the ESGs and was a little sticker shocked. I'm not looking to break the bank on this one…I've got plenty of those guitars (or so my wife tells me).

Schecter historically made good instruments for the price, but they seem to be a little higher than they should be if you buy them new, these days. You could definitely find some well priced used ones.

Honest question: Why EMG's? Just the perception? There are plenty of great passive pickups out there. With pedals or amps of today, there's really no need to push the front of the amp harder than some high output passive pickups. Hell, even medium output pickups can push modern amps plenty hard enough.

Because I don't know as much about it as you I guess.

I just want a cool, fun and decently priced shredder.

I want Dimebag Darrell Washburn or James Hetfield ESP style. I know it's silly but it's fun.

Like everything else it depends - style of metal, playing style, the amp, the whole signal chain.

I vastly prefer actives for metal - hits the front end harder and generally way tighter than a passive. It's the feel more than anything. The attack is more immediate. It's sharper, more surgical compared to most passives.

Also, some actives have an insane amount of versatility. Fishman sets typically have two distinct voicings in all five positions (modern aggressive and another with a more passive character) so they can cover a lot of tonal ground.

All that being said, obviously TONS of guys have cranked out metal for decades on passives so there's really no wrong answer. Hell, plug into an EVH 5150III on the red channel and you can chug with single coils (kind of a cool sound actually).
