I think everybody's having trouble moving guitars right now. Reverb has some stuff that's getting real tempting, but I'd have to sell stuff to cover any purchases and it's pretty clear that won't be a quick process.

I "need" two Tele's -- one with the classic Tele sound all by itself and one 5 string with Keith Richards tuning. At most, I might be able to get The Rib to agree to one for now...

So, I am looking to upgrade my son's entry-level acoustic Fender 135 to about the $1000 budget range. Do you guys have any recommendations? New or used.

We spent a few hours last Saturday playing around and the following is what he really enjoyed while window-shopping...

Taylor 114ce
Eastman 322
Cort (I failed to write down the model but it was 100% solid and around $800).

His Fender is small. I guess you guys would call it a OO, maybe an OOO. He wants a little bigger guitar with some good tonal sound. He plays in a worship band at church, therefore, tonal sound via a pickup is a must. Also, he is most comfortable with a cut-out.

Daddy is wanting to invest in his future with playing because I see his talents growing exponentially. I would like to give him something he can keep forever, but $1000 is the line in the sand. That budget would include any setup cost, if needed.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Takamine, but I don't know if they have anything in that range. I also like Seagulls and that's just their lower end $600 and under models I've tried. Solid bang for your buck.

Idk... I don't think you hit "forever" acoustic guitars until the $2k range.

For my money, the Taylor would be my choice. Granted, I'm not a big acoustic guy. Only have one, which I spent $2k for and am good forever.

I have an ibanez acoustic electric I think I paid $400 for, played a agood 100+ shows with it live, and still have it now almost 15 years later.

It sounds great, plays great.

$2k for that cutoff is ridiculous. Now I understand, $2k today compared to 2007 (when I bought this ibanez).. is maybe call it $800-$1000, but that's still twice as much as what I spent.

Out of that group the Taylor would probably be the best in terms of quality and certainly hold its value the best IMO. That's a great midrange acoustic and tons of people love them. Personally I'd try and find a used Taylor or if somehow you can find one, a Larrivee, and get the max bang for the buck. But that 114ce is a lot of guitar for the money.

I'm an electric player primary, but wanted an upgrade from my 90s all laminate crappy Bently guitar. I do have a '54 Martin D28, but that is more of a collectors piece and not a player. Needs a neck reset bad.

I ended up getting a Yamaha, that's right, Yamaha! Model FG-380 (**Correction FG-830). It is very good sounding and super easy to play. Scalloped bracing with a. solid sitka spruce top. Sounds pretty dang good to me all for just a little over $300 bucks. Perfect for campfires and the beach.

My acoustic is a Yamaha NTX1. I wanted a nylon-stringed classical guitar without those very wide fretboards, so this one feels more like an electric guitar neck (my preference for finger-picking). Paid around $400 & is what I need.

Agree to disagree. For a "lifer", I believe in investing in quality.

Simply playing lots of shows on a guitar does not mean it's a great guitar, or that others would appreciate it. You like it, that's great. I have a Schecter that cost $650 back in '05 that is a great guitar, but it doesn't hold a candle to my other ones. It's all subjective.

Hell, some can't tell the difference between a well intonated guitar and a poor one.

I have a Taylor 910ce as well, and of course it's not even in the same league as the Ibanez. But I bet the Ibanez is made well enough to last at least one generation and will be passed down to my kids. (Who both started guitar lessons this month ftw!)

I think a ~$1000 guitar today is potentially a lifer.

FG-830??!

I've got a Yamaha FG-830. My wife surprised me with it for my birthday a couple years back after I got back into learning to play after 20+ years off. When I played it I told her she spent too much. It plays well and sounds great.

It was $320. Couldn't believe it. But it has no electronics.

They make a dreadnought model with a cutaway and a concert model with a cutaway. If he's not ready for a big guitar like a dreadnought, maybe this concert would be good.

Has electronics and isn't quite so large.

Does anybody have an idea of the effect used on the lead guitar at the end of this melody? It's like a disintegrating reverb or something. It sounds natural, but I'm not sure how to replicate it. It sustains, then the signal sort of breaks up as it fades.

It almost just sounds like the guy rolled off the volume pot.

What I'm hearing are some overtones during the fade. Could just be an effect of the overdrive/amp?
