The one I had was similar to that with a maple top and the inlay extended on to the top from the FB, the one I have now is a standard fretless 5 string

What is this????

Are there paint spots on the fingerboard?

How do you gash the back of the neck that badly?

At least the price is low. That pawn shop I visited would have $500 on the price tag.

Good lord. Nothing about that guitar is right. I like how they fuzzed out the top of the headstock on the front full shot.

I think he taped the frets, removed the hardware, and rattle canned that whole thing white then added the black designs and put the hardware back on.

Thanks!

They are a really low price point, so I always get concerned when I see that. I need to see if I can find one in a local store to try out.

Just ordered a Michael Kelly 1953 T style guitar. Probably going to put an Allparts TRO-FAT neck on it.

Nice. Not familiar with them.

Is that a maple top? What is the slab made of?

I've seen the Michael Kelley name on some used guitars on Reverb but never knew who he was. Except for the Michael Kelley I went to high school with. Haven't seen him in years but he didn't play guitar. Pretty sure he's a CPA.

There isn't anyone actually named Michael Kelley at MK. I forget the story but the founder made it up I believe.

He's not a Paul Reed Smith then.

I've been looking to get a Tele body with forearm and belly cuts to pair with an Allparts fat baseball bat neck. One from Warmoth would be $500 to get a finished one. This MK I bought was $300. Hoping it all works out.

Here's the actual guitar I bought

Long time lurker here but I thought if anyone would enjoy my recent trip to Nashville, y'all would. TLDR at the bottom.

Wife and I had a very emotionally tough January for reasons I won't get into, but on a whim we decided to take a trip to Nashville. Always wanted to go to Nashville and would highly recommend it to anyone. We did just about everything; Broadway, Ryman, Opry, Cash Museum, Lynchburg, and live music with every meal. While researching places to go/things to do, the 'Gibson Garage' kept coming up.

I'm mainly an acoustic player but my ultimate dream guitars have been a Les Paul electric and a Hummingbird acoustic. I've held off buying any low end Epiphones or knockoffs because they wouldn't be the same. I recently bought a nice Taylor last summer and explained to my wife that the only guitar I'd ever want to buy after this would be a Hummingbird. (N+1 rule)

We hadn't really planned on going to the Gibson Garage but I saw it on the map when we made a run to Whole Foods and decided to stop by. Come to find out the Garage is essentially the first floor show room for Gibson Headquarters on the higher floors. We walk in and are amazed by the revolving drycleaner rack of over a hundred SG's, ES335's, and LP's in every color. Was overly greeted by a tall guy with long hair walking in. More on him in a minute.

I go straight over to the Les Paul custom shop were you can build up a custom guitar. I walk around in awe for about 10 minutes until I make it over to the acoustic room. Sales rep asks if I wanted to play anything, so of course I ask for a Hummingbird. They only had a few sunburst Hummingbirds that were left handed but had Hummingbird Rosewood Studio in natural finish.

So I sit down and play for 5-10minutes talking with the sales rep while my wife is becoming increasingly bored and hungry (not the first time I've done this). Satisfied with getting to sit a play for a bit we kind of start to wrap up when the sales rep askes if we had a chance to meet 'JC'. Turns out the guy who greeted us at the door was JC Curleigh, the CEO of Gibson. About that time JC actually walks in to the acoustic room and starts chatting with us and another person (who was playing their new G-00 with top sound port). He was so excited telling us about this new innovation for their low end guitars and says he really liked it for helping him play better (I played it later and wasn't too impressed).

We chat with him and the sales rep for at least 15minutes about different guitars(obviously), the sales rep being from Austin, me being from Fort Worth and JC's trip to the stockyards after the 49ers game vs the cowboys a few weeks prior. Really cool guy. I made a joke about playing 'Stairway' and he goes "Jimmy was here a few weeks ago and really got a kick out of our 'NO STAIRWAY' sign". Sure enough he shows me a picture of Jimmy Page bowing in front of the sign out in the store...

Crazy experience. We didn't think to ask for a photo with him as he breezed out of there leaving us (and the sales rep) in awe. I hand the Hummingbird back and the wife and I go next door to the Mexican restaurant for chips and margarita's. After 2 marg's and a quick huddle with a few of my guitar buddies, we decide that there is no way I can't NOT buy the guitar. Between the reasons we were in Nashville, the dream guitar, story, and experience, I HAD to buy this thing.

So an afternoon trip to Whole Foods ended with me buying my dream guitar and having it shipped back to Texas. It plays great and has settled in nicely next to the Taylor. They play completely different and I've found myself playing different styles depending on the guitar. It was an amazing experience and a trip I'll never forget. Every time I play its much more to me than just a pretty guitar but a light in a dark time.

Thanks for reading!
TLDR: I bought a Gibson Hummingbird after meeting and play with the CEO of Gibson at the Gibson Garage in Nashville.

I wasn't too impressed with the Gibson store. It seemed more interested in selling merch than guitars.

Carters Vintage and Gruhn were great.

Figured I may as well nab a Tremonti wah pedal to go with the guitar. Another thing I had and sold to GC for far less than it was worth apparently. They gave me $40 three years ago and paid $110 for this one. The only one cheaper was beat to hell and the rest were $50-$100 more expensive.

So what's some stuff you guys have let go over there years? I'd mentioned before I had two PRSs previously, a 2001 CE24 and a Platinum Tremonti model that I sold and bought these two Les Pauls.

I ended up selling those to grab these two Warmoth LPs so I could get nicer finishes with all the parts I wanted.

Sold the one on the right to grab an acoustic and the one on the left as part of picking up a different PRS. Warmoth guitars are cool, but even with the LP models being discontinued I got less than half of what I put in them because they're considered kit guitars.

I ultimately ended up selling the guitar that started this thread as I found a blue version I liked better and sold that one as part of picking up the Tremonti I just got. I think I miss all of them to some extent except for the two recent PRSs I sold because I ultimately grabbed others that suited what I wanted better. I'm probably the most irritated about the original Tremonti I had as, unbeknownst to me 15 years ago when I sold it, that color was fairly rare and they basically never come up for sale as a result.

Ordered the Carvin Audio x1 pedal from Sam Ash. Back ordered until April per Carvin but SAs price was good so I figured I'd buy now and see if it locks it in. No charge until it ships so we'll see.

I also ordered a 1x12 custom cab from https://atlastone.com/

Merlot stain, gold cloth, Celestion V30!

His site says 8 to 10 month wait but that's fine. Once the x1 arrives I'll use it as a tone pedal for my combo. The combo only shorts on overdrive so I'll use the pedal on the clean channel and still get all I need. When the cab is close I'll get a 50 watt power pedal then get rid of my massive combo that is too f'ing big.

Mach100 pedal amplifier

The Carvin x100b amp has great 80s rock overdrive - very EVH 70s/80s brown-type gain. The cleans were considered pristine and great for pedals. It wasn't an amp used if you want break-up at volume. By the time it breaks everyone within 100 feet has already burst their eardrums.

The X1 pedal has 12ax7 tubes and mimics the circuit of the x100b preamp (my current amp is the 2x12 combo version).

End result will be a smaller and more portable version of my 30 year old combo amp.

I'll also be able to add a second speaker if I want to get stereo sound. Think splitting the output from the x1, put an eventide pitch shifter in front of 1 input on the mach100, and only x1 only on the second input….boom, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tone.

The guitar arrived a day early. There's good news and bad news.

GOOD- the guitar looks great. 4 way switching is cool, especially the 4th position (both pups in series). Body contours yay!

BAD- aftermarket necks aren't compatible (without a lot of work), due to how Michael Kelly handles their necks and neck joints. In short, they add about 1/2 of an inch of unnecessary length to the body end of the neck. Using an aftermarket neck would require moving the bridge back about 1/2 of an inch, or mounting the neck 1/2 an inch forward, leaving a gap between it and the body (unacceptable).

This problem is detailed in this thread- https://www.squier-talk.com/threads/michael-kelly-1953-telecaster.151758/

Fortunately the stock neck is a decent size.

Fretboard looks nice. However, need to back those pickups off the strings a bit!

Looks like they also swapped the pickups out on it, or added covers. Do you know what pickups they put on it?

From what I see, it would have originally come with the uncovered 490r and 490t pickups, which I'm not a fan of. I'd put in some antiquities!

It also looks like they replaced the reflector knobs. Did you get a good discount with all of those changes?

Unless it's not a 2016 model. Here is the 2016 LP Tribute: http://legacy.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/2016/USA/Les-Paul-50s-Tribute.aspx

The tributes come w/ a maple neck if I remember correctly. I've considered buying a LP Jr. or Special DC tribute as I need a P90 guitar, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.
