If you put a Floyd Rose on a Strat style guitar, I'm going to find where you are and whack you on the nose with a rolled up newspaper.

As for the 2 point or 6 point tremelos on S Style guitars, I always set mine to the body with extra springs, but i've never "blocked" them before.

Mine is a Washburn XB-100 bass I got in the 9th grade.

Still play it fairly regularly.

Do you really still play it?

I do. Is that weird or unbelievable or something?

So with new guitars coming in, where does everybody stand on opening the box immediately? I don't think it makes much sense if the guitar wasn't overnighted.

Mines gonna sit in Houston for a full 24 hours before it even comes so I don't really see the benefit. Pretty sure it's a poly finish anyway so I don't know that there's a real concern regardless.

What's the weather like down there?

If your guitar went from a cold warehouse to a cold shipping truck, straight to your warm house, that's when you might have a problem. A few extra hours of acclimation is worth the peace of mind, IMO. Certainly more of a concern for a nitro finish though.

Yeah, depends on the temperature, when it gets in. If it is below 50, I'll probably let it sit for a few hours. Especially being that it's a 335 with a nitro finish.

I only think it's really a problem if you are going from freezing to a warm house.

I didn't mention putting a Floyd on a Strat! Calm down.

Also, username doesn't check out.

I've long gotten rid of my porchlight equipment. Funny that you still have stuff that old.

Just playing bass or playing guitar too?

Crap. My bad, dude. I completely spaced on your username.

Playing guitar now. The bass is the only relic I have.

Me too. The window they estimated is 2:45 to 6:45. Hopefully it's in the first half of that because I'll be gone for the last half.

Based on your decor, you should have at least one guitar with a tortoise shell finish

Or a PRS with tortoise or turtle fret markers

So, got tired of the sharp edges on the neck binding of my LP Classic today. Took some 0000 sandpaper to it to smooth/round them off. Much more comfortable now! I guess I can't technically say it's in "excellent condition" anymore, seeing as I relicced it, myself.

Just got home. It's gorgeous in person. I'll get some better pictures tomorrow. I'm about to have to take my daughters home in a little bit so it's gonna be a little while before I can sit down to play it.

Somehow missed the natural masked binding. I like that better than actual binding.

And finish crack. I don't see any way this was from a temperature change seeing as it got to Houston yesterday and drove around in a UPS truck all day in 70 degree temperatures.

I emailed the shop to see if there's anything to be done. It's not noticeable other than I saw happened to see it at the right angle.

I've had some suggestions to get an SE for my first electric. That it will be very comfortable to play and very good quality, will sound good, and will look great!

It's tempting.

There are quite a few people that love the SE models. I've never been a fan of their top carve, but that's just me. You can't also drop in US parts if you want to upgrade. I know with the Custom 24 SE they just released a Custom 24-08 SE that has mini switches to handle coil taps on the pickups. Those look really interesting.

Bummer on the finish crack. Very pretty guitar.

Idk... there's just something about the sound of the CE and S2 guitars I have played that just don't do it for me. I tried replacing the 85/15 pickups in my CE with Gibson Classic '57s, but apparently there's not enough room to back them off the strings as much as I would like.

It's a pretty guitar and the neck is very well done, but I have 5-6 other guitars I prefer the sounds of.

Perhaps it's just the sound of strings over a brass bridge mixed with a mahogany body and maple top.

@Maroon Barchetta: If you are interested in going electric, the first thing you should do is ask yourself what sound you expect to hear from an electric guitar. For example, if you love zeppelin and associate Page's sound as what an electric should sound like, you should buy a guitar with the same basic components. Otherwise, you end up with an instrument that doesn't sound like anything you were expecting.

Are PRS SE models good lower end guitars? Sure. But so are Mexican strats, certain epiphones, Schecters, Ibanezes, etc.

Definitely a bummer. Ultimately though you have to put light right on it and be staring at it to see it. I just happened to look ever and catch it in a reflection. Doesn't seem like something that will get worse and I'm unlikely to find a similar deal anywhere else.

Totally agree on the style suggestions. You definitely want to look for something that matches what you want stylistically and there are certainly other brands that do a fine job as well in that price range.

Heard from the seller. They said it must have happened in transit as they say it was inspected thoroughly prior to shipping, but offered to get a shipping claim started with UPS and issue a partial refund when that comes back. Sent them some pictures so we'll see. Sounds like they'd take a return on it, but it's invisible enough that I'll get used to it and stop trying to see it.

Everything else on it is awesome and it sounds and feels great. The birds have a nice outline too.

I would keep it without a thought more about it, but that's me.

Unless it is supposed to be new from the factory.

This is a question for all of you, but how much is too much to spend on a first electric? I don't need a $5000 Lifeson Les Paul, although it would be great.

Should I be as concerned about tone right away or more about playability?
aggiecouch
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Tone is mostly going to come down to your amp and your pickups. I would focus on feel.

I don't know that there's a ceiling on price for a first electric guitar. Go as high as you feel comfortable. The main risks for a first timer are going to be not knowing what kind of instrument works for you, and whether or not you actually enjoy playing long-term. To that end I'd probably recommend getting something that holds its value, in case you decide it's not for you.

Edit: just for the sake of an example, you mentioned the Lifeson Lester. Awesome axe. It has a Floyd Rose trem system, which certainly isn't for everyone, especially beginners (PITA to tune and change strings). And it's a Les Paul, which some people can't stand (strat-style guitars are generally more comfortable).

For a beginner, the name of the game is learning what you really want without doing too much damage to your bank account.
