I would too if I had more options or the smaller shop had more than just Yamaha Pacifica models.

Guess I need to make a road trip.
True. A lot of small shops have a pretty terrible selection. During Thanksgiving, I went on a 5 hour guitar safari with my cousin around the Grapevine area and found one shop, out of 5 or 6 stops, that actually had a selection of good guitars, as well as a decent used guitar selection.

In Houston, there is Fuller's Guitar and Rockin Robin Guitars and Music.

I've been to Robin. Had my acoustic serviced there. Tons of guitars and basses on display there. Not that many for sale by comparison to total number hanging on the walls and from the ceiling.
They need to decide if they are in business to sell or be a free museum.

I check their Reverb site often. Nothing I'm too interested in right now at $1000 or less.

Fuller is one I'll have to check out.

I'm open to making trips to Austin or DFW. I just don't know where to go.

Anything in Tyler or Waco or Corpus Christi? I don't mind making a drive and getting out of town for a bit.

San Marcos?

Anybody been to Alamo City Music in San Antonio?

I have not been to any other places in Austin or San Antonio.

Fuller's is a great place to go, though. They guys there are great, and they have a fantastic selection of Fenders of all price ranges. They also have a helluva selection of Taylors and Martins.

I have bought (3) guitars from them. I also generally ask for less than they list. My Taylor was marked for around $2,100. I told him I wasn't looking to spend more than $2,000 and they priced it to be right there, after tax. My CS Tele was listed at $3,600, but we agreed on $3,250.

Granted, I stop in there every other week or so to see what they've got and purchase strings, so they don't mind cutting me a deal.

It's funny what you say about Rockin Robin. I get the same feeling when I've gone there. Seems like I'm breaking a rule even walking in there and looking at their guitars.

Danny D's in League City has a decent selection. Not sure about the price range as they definitely have a lot of higher end stuff.

My brother was in a band with a guy that had a Robin in the 80's. It played well. Sounded good. This guy ended up being a singer only in a band with a great guitarist and he had some shortage of funds so he sold that Robin to a guitarist in the band I played with in high school. $150. Great deal! You can't even buy the Floyd Rose for that!

They must not make their signature Robin Strat-style guitars anymore. They have a couple hanging up that look fun and take me back 35 years, but they must be in the museum phase of the business.

My mistake, it was Southlake. I had started in Grapevine but was being navigated by my cousin.

Tone Shop Guitars is the name of the shop. They have a location in Addison and Southlake. The Southlake location is a newer shop. They had a great selection of quality guitars at the Southlake location. I've never been to their Addison location.

Again, when buying a guitar at a shop like this, don't be afraid to ask for a deal. Shops like these always have a few hundred dollars to work with if you are not weirded out by asking.

Southlake counts as Grapevine area! I've been wanting to check out the Tone Shop in Southlake since I heard they opened one on this side of town. I'll have to go browse now, Thanks!

I bought my used PRS acoustic from Tone Shop in Addison. They were great to work with on that sale.

However, they did put 13's on that guitar when they set it up.

I don't.

It had a little fret buzz and the action was higher than I wanted. Took it to Robin and had one of their luthiers lower the action. He sanded down the bridge a bit, leveled the frets, and put Elixir 11's in there.

+1 for Danny D's. I took lessons from George Elbel there and bought my PRS Custom 22 from them as well. They have nice stuff there.

I surfed their site last night after seeing it mentioned here. Looks like they have some good stuff!

I can attest that Tone Shop in Addison has a very large selection. They lean heavily on Martin and Taylor for acoustics. Electrics they have a wall of Reverend plus a lot of Fender and Gibson. Plenty of Charvel and Kramer as well.

I've been very interested in a few of the Reverend models, but don't want to buy something online without playing it first.

I'm not familiar with Reverend.

Anybody ever imported a guitar? Looking at a US guitar that's coming out to the upper limit of what I want to spend but is in Canada. Description mentions paying duties on import. I don't want to spend at my upper limit and then have to pay a few hundred in taxes on a product that was made here.

For folks in the Dallas area, The Guitar Sanctuary in McKinney has plenty of nice PRSs, Suhrs, and Fenders. Bought one of my Strats from them, and nearly bought a beautiful tiger wrap PRS 594 Hollowbody II just before the break.

I have not. I won't purchase a guitar from outside the US, generally.

Nah, I've walked in plenty of times. Staff can be a little…*****ly, but maybe that's par for the course at these sorts of places.

Just so hard to buy a guitar without playing it first. I really want a 335 or 345. I've seen some decent deals on Reverb, but they are all listed as a Rounded "C" neck profile. The last 335 I had was a Rounded C, and it felt too thick in my hands. However, my '02 LP Standard had a "50's" neck profile, but it is the slimmest 50's neck I have played. It feels better than the skinny slim taper 60's necks I have played on Gibsons, but not near as fat as the "Rounded C" necks.

I really need to measure this guitar's neck thickness so I know exactly what I am looking for, I guess. My LP is one of the most comfortable necks in my arsenal and I would love a 335 or 345 with the exact same profile.

They have them in spades in Addison. I've never played one, just grabbed the neck briefly to confirm what my eyes were telling me - they're thick. For those that want a beefy neck I'd certainly give them a shot.

Their retro/jetson's look isn't really my bag but I have to admit there's something about the aesthetic that I dig. I need to play one some day to see if it is something I'd like on my wall.

That Cole Clark Ben Harper guitar (not the skateboard one) I posted on page one was made in Australia but I had it shipped from a shop in Japan where it was located two years ago. I didn't have to pay any additional import duties, just a pretty high shipping cost around $125 or so IIRC.

I'm not certain but it may vary by country origin.

I never even would have thought about it if it hadn't been in the description. The idea of paying taxes on something that was made in the US is just insane to me. The one I was looking at has like a $250 shipping cost because it sounds like the seller has to fill out a form and apparently that's an issue for him.

So it all worked out. I had asked a shop that sent a discount offer through Reverb if they'd be willing to do that just through their site. They agreed so free shipping, no sales tax, and no fees for them.

Unfortunately no. That was just an individual seller and wouldn't come off his massive shipping charge enough. This one is in the states.

Nice!!

edit: oh, I thought the above post was about you getting a work around the Canada deal. But still, nice!!
