Any thoughts on Tokai LPs? I'm considering taking the leap, but I'm not sure.

None whatsoever.

They seem to have affordable lines and lines priced similarly to the Gibsons. I mean, if it plays great and sounds great, go for it.

DallasTeleAg - do you know anything about this Casio Dg-20 guitar Billy Strings played last night? I looked it up on ebay and they are all cheap and sold in Japan. I'm wondering if those are knockoffs.

Obviously I'm into signatures and bits (no pun intended) but this is pretty amazing:

Sorry, I do not. Never played a synth guitar in my life.

Appreciate the reply. I figured it wouldn't be your style and I asked my local guitar teacher today if he'd seen one before and he wasn't versed either. I suppose I'd need a big ol' pedal board to go with it for the full effect.

Not that I'll ever be on Billy's level but it's fun to make noise.

Wife wants to get me a gift card for Christmas. She asked if I want Sweetwater or Guitar Center.

I'm leaning GC because there is more of a chance to visit a brick and mortar location if I am so inclined. But I really like the Sweetwater site and "experience" of shopping a little better. Their selection seems better to me.

Keep in mind I'm a fairly new player so while I have what I need right now, in the future there will be amp, electric guitar, pedals, etc.

What would you choose and why?

Sweetwater. Great customer service.

The sweetwater customer services is great, but I also prefer playing a new guitar before buying it... especially if you would be purchasing your first mid range or quality guitar. Granted, with a company like Sweetwater, you should be able to return it within a certain window if you are not completely happy with it.

I've had good luck with Sweetwater. Plus they send you candy (Sweet Tarts, Bit O Honey, etc) when you buy something.

I bought a hanging acoustic guitar storage case from them recently. They sent candy with that.

It actually arrived the morning of Thanksgiving. I had no idea anybody would be out delivering packages on a holiday.

Not a new guitar for me, but for a friend that lives in California. Played in a band with him in high school when I played bass. He still plays live regularly.

He was Les Paul guy for a long time. Then he played PRS for decades. At least 20 years. Now he has his first Collings.

He just got through trading a PRS and some money for this beauty. He said it's the best playing guitar he's ever picked up. He's been playing ~40 years so that's quite a statement.

It sure is pretty!

Just had never seen this guitar before or watched Flight of the Conchords. Good stuff.

Ordered a 3/4 size acoustic from them for my 7 year old daughter who's been begging me for a guitar. Good customer service.

Where are all the pics of new gear?

Also, what would be the best use of a $100 gift card to Sweetwater and one to Guitar Center? I only have acoustics at this point. I could put one of those towards an amp. At some point I will want an electric. Maybe put one towards an electric, even if used, and one towards an amp.

Katana mini?
Blackstar?

I'm an amp snob, so would never buy a solid state amp. I only really buy peripherals from Sweetwater or Guitar Center. I like to buy my amps or guitars second hand.

I'm a relatively new player without even an electric to plug into an amp yet. I do have a couple of acoustics with pickups. I'm not worried about getting a Marshall or Fender or a Plexi or something yet. I know the value of tube amps over solid state. Just not sure I need that yet.

What peripherals do you recommend?

No guitar stuff this year. This is about as close as I got.

The only peripherals a beginner will really need is lessons and practice time. You can always get a cheapo electric from a pawn shop, then take it to a guitar store for a setup.

Sure. You can go get a nice amp, and a bunch of effects pedals or a multi-effects box, and it's fun, but doesn't improve playing. Just costs money until you get better. If it is fun enough to make you practice more, then maybe worth picking up a few toys.

That's nice. Looks like the offspring of a Les Paul and a PRS Custom 22 anyways.

I'm taking lessons and trying to set aside practice time but some days the schedule does not allow for practice.

I don't need a nice amp. Not high-dollar anyway. Just something that works and doesn't sound terrible.

A high school classmate just picked up his 42nd guitar on Varagesale for $60. It's an Ibanez that was listed for $150 and has some scratches but otherwise looks good. Maybe I need to go that route for a used guitar. Or give him $100 for that one!

All those guitars and he doesn't play a note.

Based on that. I would go pay him a visit and play around on his collection to see if you like any particular style, ie strat style with single coils or les Paul style with hamburgers lmao. Humbuckers. Fixed bridge vs floating (I suggest fixed at this stage of the game). 22 frets vs 24. Fat neck vs skinnier. Etc...

He lives 150 miles away.

He collects guitars so he can get them autographed by artists at concerts and then hangs them on his walls. It's his decor.

Maybe I can talk him into selling the Ibanez. It hasn't been signed yet.

Ibanez guitars are everywhere at pawn shops and you can likely get one pretty cheap. Maybe just hit up a few and see what you can find if you think that's one you may like, grab one and then get it setup properly at a guitar store. You can probably get a small single speaker practice amp while you are at it.

Don't get a floating bridge unless you plan to be Eddie Van Halen on the whammy bar. They are a pain to restring and tune up or play in alternate tunings.

I would go solid state on the amp. There are many good digital amps that sound pretty good at a quiet bedroom volume. They are also very affordable.

Tube amps are the best but they have to be loud to get the best sound out of them.

Thanks!

I'm looking at a Katana (mini or larger), Blackstar (fly or larger), or a Spark.

I have a Katana 100watt. Looking back I didn't need to go that big, 50 watt would have been plenty. Blackstar is great as well but I've only played them at the store. (Had fun with them)

I've never played a Spark but they look interesting. Almost like a bookshelf speaker which is super convenient.

These new digital amps are loads of fun and perfect for someone learning or who mostly play at home. Plus you get all the basic effects like delay, reverb, overdrive, etc built in them.

The spark is cool because you can get a ton of different tones/sounds without pedals. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth and you can instantly pull up either say, Jimi's strat tone or Dimebag's tone if you want to play some Pantera. I play through my Fender Bassbreaker the vast majority of the time but still love playing around with my spark. Think it would be a good first amp for someone who likes playing a wide variety of music and wants to instantly pull up different tones.

I talked to my Sweetwater sales engineer. He recommends the Katana MkII over the Blackstar and the Spark. And he said he was all in on the Positive Grid stuff for a long time but he think that for my situation Katana would be the way to go.

It certainly has a lot of strong points. I'm going to do a little more research but can see that if I get a Katana I don't need to upgrade again anytime soon if ever.

I recently bought a Katana 100 MkII and love it. Don't really need the 100 watts, but it has more bells and whistles than the 50 watt version. Since I gig with it I definitely needed the foot controller, but you don't need it for bedroom jamming. I doubt if people in the audience could tell the difference between it and a tube amp.

From what i've heard, the Katana is a go to for solid state amps.

I would definitely stay away from a floating bridge on a cheap guitar. Tuning stability will always be an issue for cheap guitars, without upgraded parts.
