Just received notification my guitar has shipped. Crazy thing is that the link I posted no longer works. When I go to their ES section, the Olive Drab Green is no longer listed.

Looks like I bought this one right before they stopped selling them. That is crazy.

I had asked a question about tuning on a TSO song on a fan page. Didn't really expect to get a response from one of their guitarists.

Deep down, I'm kind of hoping they messed up and left that on their site, but no longer mass producing them, so maybe had to make a one off for my order. Just so strange they took it down right after I placed my order, and on a random date.

My biggest fear with the guitar is not getting a dark enough fretboard. One of biggest differences I'm seeing in the older Gibsons vs the newer ones is the rosewood. For example, my '02 LP Standard has a fantastic dark fretboard, but my '17 classic is much liter and doesn't seem as smooth.

Granted, my '16 ES-330 has a darker fretboard, but it was made in the Memphis plant while it was still open.

It's a pre-amp tube pedal utilizing 12ax7's. Just doesn't have the power tubes to drive a speaker.

Not new, but new to me in the past few months.

The Lifeson thin line model of the PRS Angelus, complete with the "birds in flight" fret markers. Electric/acoustic.

The back and sides are Dao wood. Top is Sitka spruce. Neck is mahogany.

The signature version of this guitar is much more tricked out. And was $15,000. Yikes.

This version listed for $799 in 2016 when released.

I am a beginner player. Years ago in high school I played bass and keyboards. Later in my single days I bought a Takamine acoustic with some tax refund money kind of on impulse. Took lessons for a spell when I first got married but kids and adult responsibilities got in the way and I put the Takamine away for almost 20 years.

Started lessons again this year. It's been fun! Having an instructor works for me better than online lessons or just books. Used the Takamine with its 20 year-old strings to start with.

A few months in my wife bought me a Yamaha for my birthday. Total surprise. It is an inexpensive model but plays really well and sounds better than some more expensive guitars I have tried.

However, the Yamaha doesn't have a cutaway. My instructor said "I like your Yamaha but you will need a cutaway in the near future with where I'm taking you in your lessons. Can your wife take it back and exchange it?"

You married guys know that returning gifts even for exchange can be a bad plan. Feelings can get hurt.

Using the logic I have learned from you fine TexAggers, I told my instructor "This is a perfect time to justify the purchase of an additional guitar. My instructor says I need a cutaway."

This Lifeson model showed up in a random YouTube suggestion. It was Alex in a guitar store in Japan looking at his $15K model. That led me to looking for the cheaper model.

They come up on Reverb once in a great while but get snapped up quickly. Rush fans don't let go of Rush stuff, and they buy it quickly if it comes available. I delayed pulling the trigger on two I saw over the course of a few months.

This one showed up on Reverb at a Dallas-area shop. It was listed much less than the other two I missed on. I called the shop and snapped it up. It arrived the next day. I saved probably $300 missing out on those first two.

Here's a couple of photos of the guitar and one of what I will look like someday when I'm playing it on the sidewalk for spare change or cash.

I have a '12 Sienna Sunburst MIA Strat, a '68 Custom Princeton Reverb Reissue, a Fender Pugalist Distortion, the Fender delay pedal (can't remeber the fancy name for that one), and a custom built tube (12AU7, I believe) overdrive pedal.

I can't play for ****, but every couple of months, I'll pick it up again and keep trying to learn until life gets in the way again.

But it is fun to have nice stuff even when your skill doesn't justify it. I have it because I want it and I can.

Now if I could just explain how my logic works to my wife....

This has been mentioned on this thread before, but I will reiterate.

There are two things I hear in the guitar world all the time:

1. You don't need good gear to be a good player.
2. When I get good, I'll get some better gear.

I think both of these are either a thinking error or are just bad platitudes.

I agree, you do not need a $3,200 custom shop guitar and a $2,500 hand-built boutique amp to be good at guitar. However, I also believe there are some beginner instruments that are just trash. The action's too high, they don't intonate well, the frets are buzzing, etc.

If you are a learner, why would you get excited about playing an instrument that sounds bad and is just hard to play?

Good guitar gear is not that expensive. The best advice anyone should be giving is to buy used equipment. Used musical equipment never loses value (as long as you don't destroy it) and will sometimes even sound or play better than a new piece of equipment. If you are a beginner, I believe you would be better off buying a used Fender American Strat or even a higher tier Made in Mexico Strat than a Squire. Again, you don't need a Fender Ultra Strat or a Fender Custom Shop Strat. The baseline Fender American Standard/Professional is one of the best bangs for your buck.

If you buy a beginner a $950-$1,100 used Fender American Strat, he/she has a fantastic guitar they can play for the rest of their life, it will feel comfortable to play, it will sound great, and will help them get excited about playing the guitar. If they decided they don't want to play guitar after a year or so, then you just sell it to someone else on Reverb or Cragslist for the same amount you bought it for.

I type all that to say, it's never too early to buy what you want. If you want to rock on an electric guitar and amp, go buy a nice setup (not extravagant) and enjoy the hell out of it!

All good points. I was actually picking my Takamine up from the shop on my birthday when my wife surprised me with the Yamaha. The Takamine was in to get the action adjusted so it would be easier to play.

I've got two guitars now that are new to me and another that has been set up at a shop. So much easier to play than before.

When I eventually get an electric I won't cheap out. I realize how quickly you can get discouraged when it's harder than it should be to play the instrument.

I almost bought a used Schecter at GC that had nice low action and played really easily. As with the first two Lifeson acoustics I saw online, and a couple of other models I saw in GC, I waited too long. It went quickly.

Also, is it always such a beating to try and check out guitars at GC? They need a quiet place to check out things away from the guys trying to impress everyone that they can play the opening to Unforgiven or Come As You Are.

They can be rough for sure. I know some have rooms for amp testing. You can maybe see if you can use one of those. Outside of that, you're likely to get a lot more help going to a small shop.

Where are you located?

For those on a budget, the newer Squeir Classic Vibes (avoid the Affinitys and Bullets) are pretty legit. On par with the MIM Strats from 15~20 years ago. Fender has upped their game over the last decade or so.

Ahh... that sucks. I hate having to test guitars in Guitar Center. But really, it doesn't matter where I am, it always gives me anxiety to play a guitar in a public guitar store.

Good thing most stores have a return policy.

Oh yeah... and...

NEW GUITAR DAY!!!!

Spent some time working on the string and pickup height, to get it where I like it. I prefer the pickups backed off a fair bit, and the strings a little higher than normal to avoid fret buzz and so I can really dig in and grab the string when I'm bending. I hate very low action because my fingers always slip off the strings.

Sounds fantastic so far. The only problem is I'm out of stand space in my living room. I'm going to have to pack up one of my guitars...

I will need to intonate it once I determine I have the string height perfect. I also would like to put some pickup covers on it, though I've heard it's not best to do that after market. I don't understand why that would be an issue, but it's something I've heard.

The QC looks pretty good. I would give it a 9/10 on QC. Still some tiny things here or there that I don't think should be on a $3,299 guitar, but that's just what you get with Gibson these days. Also, you can't beat that fresh Nitrocellulose smell, when you first open the case. I need an air freshener with that smell.

That looks great. Coincidentally I was looking into this just yesterday that was released last week. Being much more of a signature collector as opposed to anything resembling a decent player and a huge MMJ fan it'll likely be headed my way pretty soon:

https://www.guitarworld.com/news/gibson-jim-james-es335

edit: maybe it won't be coming my way. Guy in the comments of the video below said only 300 were made and they sold out quickly. Will have to research that.

I just entered a contest to win a PRS hollow body electric. I've never been interested in a hollow body electric (save for some of those big Gibsons) but a free $1150 guitar would be fun to play!

So... I have played the guitar for several hours now... and it's just not quite "it" for me.

  • The pickups are very bright. So much so that the high strings are too ice picky. These are the newer "Calibrated T-Type" pickups that Gibson is putting in the 335's, now. I know I can probably put different pickups in it for the tone I really want, but I don't think I should need to spend $200-$300 on a $3,299 guitar to get it where I want it, tone wise.
  • The neck is THICK. My '02 Les Paul has a "50's" neck profile, which is a littler thicker than all my other guitars, but I think it is very comfortable to play. I love the feel of that Les Paul neck and was thinking this ES-335 would have the same neck profile when I read "Rounded C". It turned out to be just shy of the Fender U shaped necks, which I just don't find comfortable to play.

I love everything else about the guitar, and would still consider purchasing a 335 in the future, but when I spend over $2,000 on a guitar, I expect it to wow me, and I expect to be in love with it. I feel that way about my Gibson ES-330 (So freaking amazing), my custom shop Tele, my Les Paul, and my two strats.

For those reasons, I think I'm going to go ahead and return the guitar. Per Gibson's website, I can return the guitar if I am not 100% happy with it, within 30 days of the purchase. I think this is the wisest decision.

Hell... for that price, I'd be interested in purchasing a Paoletti guitar or something else really cool.

Unfortunately, that's the sort of risk you take when you buy a guitar sight unseen. If it were just the pups that would be one thing, but there's not much you can do about the neck. Good luck with the return. Maybe look into a 60s 335?

I stopped by GC this evening to see what used electrics had come in and poke around the acoustic room.

Also wanted to ask about bringing my acoustic in to try out some amps. I've never tried the pickups on it and want to see what's up.

It was really busy in there. About as busy as I've seen it. Had to bail out. I'll go back when it's less busy.

Too many tire kickers in there trying to form a band in the amp section.
