Okay... I apologize for the novel, but there is a lot to your question.

I've never messed with a compression pedal, so can't give much feedback on that. I actually don't like compressing my tone and I get enough compression from my overdrive pedals, when I need to play higher gain stuff.

I've never used the Hall of Fame reverb, but I believe it's fairly well reviewed. I use the Black Country Customs Secret Path. I love the Secret Path setting for playing floyd-like things.

You have two overdrive pedals, and they are fairly standard "intro" to overdrive models. I know there are some professional guys who still use them, though sometimes modded by keeley or someone. Overdrive pedals are pieces of gear I have spent over a decade figuring out and understanding how I can best use them in my signal chain. I am an overdrive snob, and HATE fizzy sounding drive. I have used the Boss DS-1, BD-2, and SD-1. They're.... okay.

I highly recommend spending some time digging into videos from some of the better GuitarTube guys on overdrive pedals. It all comes down to the dynamics and settings of your amp, the tones you are looking for, and the guitar you are playing. At the end of the day, I am not a fan of using distortion pedals to get all your overdrive tones. I like to use them more as boosters to allow my tube amp to drive more naturally.

If you have the time, the BEST GuitarTube channel for truly understanding everything you would ever want to know about any type of pedal is That Pedal Show. These guys are absolutely amazing and their videos take the time to really allow you to understand:

I play through a Dr. Z Maz 18 MkII. I absolutely LOVE this amp. Over the last decade, I have owned a Fender Blues Junior, Fender Bassbreaker, Peavey Classic 50, Egnater Tweaker, Egnater Rebel 30, Marshall Origin 20, and Tone King Falcon Grande. I could never really find the tone I was looking for until I bought the Maz 18, and now I know this is an amp I will never get rid of. It has shades of an AC30, fender blackface, and some plexi in it; however, it is still its own thing.

I say all of that because it is extremely important to know where you are starting. The Maz 18 is NOT a high gain amp. It is a single channel low to mid gain amp, which i love. I dial in a slightly mid-scooped, edge of breakup tone on my amp. This allows me a great clean tone on my guitars but with a little room to dig into the strings to get a little clipping. Absolutely amazing tone.

From there, the next question is which guitar I am playing.

Les Paul: My Les Paul is an '02 Standard with a set of Seymour Duncan Antiquities loaded in it. It has a fantastic warm tone with woody clarity from the pickups. I love this guitar. When going through the Hi input of my amp, it has a slight overdriven sound with great dynamics. However, as anyone who has played a Les Paul with PAF style humbuckers can tell you, driving it can get a little too dark and can lose clarity. Finding a solution to this was one of the biggest eye openers for me. How do I drive a LP with PAFs and not get a muddy tone?

Answer: Treble Booster. I think a good treble booster is one of the things many new and intermediate players don't know about and is one of the most important parts to a good signal chain. All of your favorite guitar heroes from the 70's used a treble booster like the Dallas Rangemaster. A treble booster allows you to roll-off bass from your signal when you kick it on, adds distortion and can either leave your treble intact or add treble, if you want.

This allows you to have great clean or edge of breakup warmth in your tone, but then cut through the mix with great clarity when you kick on your overdrive.

I use the Black Country Customs TI Boost as my treble booster. This was created by Laney's custom pedal division specifically to try and replicate Tony Iommi's modded Rangemaster, which was accidentally thrown away by one of his roadies. I absolutely love this pedal. It is EXTREMELY transparent, and allows me to get my Les Paul in that classic rock area of overdrive I love to play in.

For my Strat and Tele, they are already starting from a much more sparkly-clear tone, from my LP. I did not like the tone I was getting when using the treble booster. Or, I would have to tweak it each time I changed guitars. I, again, hit up my GuitarTube channels to find a boost/overdrive for those guitars. After years of searching, I think i've found the one for me only a few weeks ago.

Funny thing about the guys at That Pedal Show is that Mick plays predominately Strats, and Dan plays predominately Teles. It just so happens that Keeley worked with them to create their own pedal with basically 2 built into one. It is fantastic for layering a boost with an overdrive. These two sides are voiced similar to some of their favorite pedals.

I have now had this for several weeks and LOVE the tones I can get out of them. I don't see myself ever getting rid of this one.

Lastly, as for Analog Delay, let me save you some time, money, and buyers remorse. Don't start with the M169. Jump immediately to the Carbon Copy Deluxe. Has everything that is great with the carbon Copy, but adds a tempo switch, so you can tap out the tempo of the delay effect. It also adds a few other things. I originally had the Carbon Copy and, though it sounded great, I hated having to constantly dial in the delay tempo I needed. Costs only $50 or so more, and will make your life so much better.

Never played with their analog Chorus, but I'd assume that will sound great, based on my other experiences with MXR.

Hope that all helps!

Completely missed your question on signal chain.

Again... great videos on that from That Pedal Show. Seriously, grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and watch their content. You will learn SO much, if you are truly curious. They have videos on signal chain, all the various types of pedals, layering pedals, speakers for cabs, types of guitars and dynamics; they are nearly endless with great content.

They do not rush their videos, but generally bookmark them for you to jump to where you want to go.

The standard answer to signal chain is to start with your boosts, then overdrives, then distortions, and then to your modification pedals, if you are not using the FX loop.

If you have an FX loop, you would have a second signal chain where you route your reverb, delay, and chorus out of the Send in the FX loop and then back into the Return. Reverb would be your last pedal in the signal chain.

However, there are many famous musicians who put everything directly into the front of the amp. I do this because I am too lazy to reorganize my pedal board, and I don't want so many damn cables running to my amp. Where I think it affects my sound is when I roll back volume on my guitar. I think the Delay and reverb pedals react to the signal strength you send into them. If you weaken that signal by lowering the volume of your guitar, it weakens the effect of the reverb and delay. If you put it in your FX loop, you don't have that same effect.

Lastly, buy a Looper. If I had to get rid of ALL my pedals except for one, the only pedal I would have is my Ditto. This is the last pedal on your board and allows you to just have a freaking good time, by yourself.

My current board. I don't have the Blues Driver connected; it's just sitting there.

Awesome response. Thank you for taking the time to type that all out.

I'm about to light my grill to smoke a turkey. I'll check out those videos while making sure my fire doesn't go out, lol.

Thank you again

DallasTeleAg did a great job of covering the effect pedal order, but here are a few additional things I'll toss into the ring.

Mess w/the location of you loop pedal, in and out of the loop. the FX loop comes after the distortion in the amp. If you loop a clean rhythm in with your looper pedal in your FX loop, you can then engage your overdrive to solo over the clean rhythm

Woodshed putting the pedals in different order. The "general" rule of thumb is that modulation pedals go in your fx loop. I have an MXR EVH Phase90 that I absolutely cannot put in the FX loop - it completely sucks the volume from the signal. Once I put it outside of the loop and into the chain in front of the amp it works great.

I'm still tinkering but this is my setup today, which will likely change since I had all of my pedals other than my wah and tuner packed away.

Guitar>dimebag wah (sometimes I put a hammet wah instead of the dime)>Digtech Whammy DT>Keeley Compressor Plus>MXR Fullbore metal>Boss RC-3 Loop Station.

My FX loop has a Boss CE-2 chorus (modded by Keeley before he transitioned to only building new pedals)>Keeley Mag Echo.

Not plugged in I have an old Ibanez Soundtank Digital Delay. It's a plastic cheap pedal I bought back in the ?mid 09's? I'll probably put it in soon. you can get some pretty crazy stuff going with two delay pedals that have different settings and tones when you're running through a loop pedal. I also need to put my tc electronics tuner back in the chain.

Also, don't forget your tuner. Gotta have a tuner as your first pedal. It also works great as a way to turn off your volume when you are switching guitars.

The Boss tuner is just tried and true. I have the mini version on my pedal because my pedal switcher has a tuner in and out that I can turn on and off from the switcher.

The earlier overdrive video I listed was more on order of drive pedals. Here is one on finding the right drive pedal for you:

Been too long since a post, so I thought I would share with some Aggie guitarists some stuff.

So, starting to think I'm in the market for a Fender Jazzmaster. I have a tele and two Strats; think I need me a Jazzmaster. I have an alert set on Reverb for a Dave's Guitar Shop '62 Jazzmaster, similar to my strat. Just love the thin skin nitro finish and dark rosewood board. The guitar just feels better than other models I have played, so I am assuming the Jazzmaster will be the same.

Also, found a video on Youtube about trying to replicate the sound of a Burst they had. The pickups on that guitar were backed off a little more than mine, but then had the screw pole pieces screwed out about 1-1.5mm from being flush. I went ahead and tried that on my LP and am absolutely loving the tone shift it gave me. It immediately made my guitar more articulate and clear. The neck pickup is so much more defined and "woody" sounding.

I recommend those of you who like a more vintage sound give this adjustment a try. I will be leaving my LP like this, going forward:

It's a sickness...after getting all the guitars I thought I must have and swearing off anything new for a long LONG time, about two days later I'm thinking "You know, every collection probably does need a PRS after all" then immediately opens phone to reverb.

And I agree this thread has been dead lately which sucks because it's my favorite thread on texags.

Who are some of y'all's favorite "not so obvious" favorite guitarists? Beyond the obvious Jimi, SRV, EVH, etc.?

Maybe some of these are obvious too but as an unabashed TOOL fan, I love Adam Jones. His playing creates a space and atmosphere that is really cool.

Also really like Josh Homme and the way he kind of purposefully leaves out notes.

Could honestly list about 15 now that I've started typing this out but would love to hear some of y'all's. Always love learning about new music I might have missed.

Gotta keep the thread about the guitars! What kind of rig are your favorite guitarists using!

For me, I think Mike Einziger from Incubus is underrated. Always loved this live version of Sick Sad Little World (also, so happens to be playing a Jazzmaster in this performance! A sign?)

A buddy of mine sent me a pic of this he bought the other day. It was the next best thing to spending at least 10 grand on that limited Les Paul:

Anyone ever played a Paoletti guitar?

Been watching videos of these things and very curious about them. Apparently hand made in Italy out of old wine barrel chestnut that is over 100 years old.

I've never even heard of them but just checked out their website and damn they look nice:

edit: after looking over their site I do think I recognize the name from their straps but I've never seen one of their guitars sold in a store. I could just be ignorant and wasn't looking.

Check out this guy playing a cigar box guitar they sell:

Lots of them on Reverb for about the same price as a new Fender CS guitar.

May need to be my next purchase after my next big sale...

Right after I posted I went straight to the request info and gave them all of my contact info and said I want a quote on that cigar box and some other items of interest. Haven't received a response yet. Their artist page has major players on it as well:

https://www.paolettiguitars.com/artists/

I do have a cigar box guitar that's only a 3 string that some random guy in Navasota made that my buddy gave me but I can assure you it sounds nothing like what that guy in the video is playing. Plus it has a great look to it imo so I'd like to add it to my collection. Just have to wait and see if the price is right...

Just made a new purchase! I liked my Falcon Grande okay, but I really wanted more tonal options and everything I ever hear from the Imperial MKII is fantastic.

https://reverb.com/item/43677797-tone-king-imperial-mkii-20-watt-1x12-guitar-combo

I love my Maz18, but it can't really do that dirty bluesy thing that a good 6L6 american style amp can do. The guy is offering it for $2,000 after I offered $1,900. From watching these on Reverb for a while, that is as good of a deal as I'm going to find for a MKII.

Closed a $101K deal today, so I needed to celebrate!

I will end up posting the Falcon Grande on Reverb.

Looks awesome. Probably a good day to grab something too. I saw on a few PRS pages that their prices for new guitars all jumped today. I'm not sure if that's just a PRS thing or if other things are about to start jumping too. For reference, S2s seem to have gone up $150 overnight.

Thought I'd share this for all my PRS fanboys on this thread. I was trying to get my CE to a place that I liked more. I love the look of this guitar, but just wasn't getting the sound I wanted. I decided to try backing the pickups off the strings a bit, starting with the bridge pickup. After backing it away slightly, the pickup mounting screw and spring popped out of the pickup.

I had no idea these CE cavities were so shallow. Even the pickup screw is shorter by about half an inch compared to a standard LP humbucker pickup mounting screw. That meant I had to take all the strings off to fix the pickup. Because I was already going to need to spend some time doing this, I decided to go ahead and install my spare set of Gibson Zebra '59's in there. I am not generally a big humbucker guy, and usually prefer lower output pickups. If I'm going to play humbuckers, i stick to PAF style ones. Went ahead and swapped out the 85/15 MT pickups with my Gibson '59's and have been very pleasantly surprised by the difference.

The PAFs are much clearer, articulate, and punchy. They are still a little too close to the strings for my liking, but there is literally no way to back them off more. I would need a different pickup with a much shallower mounting device.

So, end result is I now have a guitar that I love the look of and now actually enjoy the sound of, as well. Also, I have a set of 85/15 pickups I can resell for around $400. I don't know why people pay that price for these things, but my last set I had sold very quickly.

People definitely love those pickups. Probably has more to do with their unavailability to be purchased separately. Same for the 53/10s. I don't think they're really $700-$800 pickups, they're just impossible to find.

I'll probably end up replacing the 85/15 pickups in one of my CE24s. Either with Tremonti pickups or their metal pickups.

I hadn't thought about the cavities but that doesn't surprise me. The bodies are pretty thin and with the shallower carve there's just not as much wood there.

This was posted today on the PRS forum. Same guitar. It's an interesting idea, I'd just wonder in what situation would it ever really show up? I'm not sure if stage lighting is low enough to really let it glow. Granted, this is probably more likely to grace the wall of a dentist or lawyer than be played on a stage. Either way, it's cool guitar.
