I don't think I've ever heard of that happening either.

Always hated changing strings on locking trems. Haven't owned once since the '90s.

Dayum.

On another note, I finally sold my pair of Celestion V-Type speakers on Reverb for 120+75 shipping. Took forever to sell.

I still have my PRS S2 on reverb, but I i'm starting to think I'm not going to sell it.

Restringing the Axis on Sunday and the high E tuner suddenly jammed. Gave it a crank and the pearloid button shattered. Craziest damned thing I've seen. The inner workings of the Schaller jammed up. I suspect the post jumped the groove (whatever the terminology).

The sudden shriek and my wife assumed I'd run across a spider

Fortunately you can buy a replacement direct from Music-Man. All other online retailers want to sell a full set of 6 complete tuners (not only the pearled button), and Schaller is 50lbs to order a single from Europe.
not sure if we're taking about the same thing but my Taylor 9 series came with these black ebenoid Grover tuners. They would fail somehow that resulted in you spinning the tuner but the post didn't spin.
Twice I had one break and Taylor sent me a whole set for free. I ended up finding a smoking deal on the typical gold set like $20, and sold two full ebenoid sets (only 2 broken ones out of 18) for like $100

Can anyone recommend a custom pickguard builder in the central Texas area?

I have a Sienna Sunburst strat and I'm thinking I want a light colored wood or light tan leather pickguard and trem cover either laser-etched or tooled with the Gonzales flag on the pickguard.

I know what you mean but in this case it wasn't the button that was the issue. The gears in the body of the tuner jammed up and the post stopped turning in either direction. I'd noticed it starting to have a little more resistance a few twists earlier but didn't give it much (any) though.

Rather than having any intellectual curiosity I just assumed it need "a little help" and gave the button a hard twist.

That's when I cried

I know a lot of guys that have used this lady for guitar straps and raved about her. I can't imagine doing a pick guard would be out of the realm of possibility for her.

Try Etsy - tons of custom guitar stuff. May not be able to find exactly (especially Gonzales flag), but should be able to find someone that you like the quality of their work and can ask for custom.

Also tons of people willing to do things on laser etchers.

Example (not Gonzales flag :-) )

Thanks. Found a plain one from Amazon (this person advertises the same one on eBay and Etsy as well). Waiting on a quote for custom tooling. May still get it and find someone more local to tool it if I don't like their quote.

Not in a huge rush to do it, just want something that's unique and mine because, well,...because.

Got my Amber PRS sold so I'm mostly out of the doghouse now. Ended up selling it locally on OfferUp. I just threw it up there to have it in another place. Didn't really expect to get anything from there. Sold it for about what I paid minus shipping and taxes so my losses on were a lot less than expected.

I know who all these guys are, but am I the only one that thinks it's insane to have them sign a $2000 instrument and expect it increased the value? Aside from the obvious concerns with having any idea if he didn't sit around one night and try to do it himself.

autographed items by celebrities typically go up in value... why do you think it's insane?

He has the picture of him with those dudes.

I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong, but without photos of them signing I'm not inclined to spend what amounts to a grand on those autographs given that used the guitar itself is actually probably $1500. I think there's a reason you usually see stuff like this signed on a Squire or something similar too. It's also not always the case that something would increase in value with a signature. It doesn't help that none of those are guys who's signatures I'd be particularly interested in.

I have a co-worker who is a HUGE Van Halen fan. He actually bought a Van Halen guitar that Eddie actually played on stage in Houston about 20 years ago. At the time he was auctioning off his stage used guitars for charity or something. I think he paid close to 20K for it back then. He has the photo of him playing it and all the official documentation. Wonder what that thing is worth now?

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't expect any significant value increase while those guys are still alive because they have opportunity to create more supply. Also, while they are all phenomenal guitarists and a couple have push/evolved rock guitar further, they are not exactly household names like Hendrix, SRV, or EVH.

I find it kinda humorous that he brought a PRS for them to sign. To my knowledge they all endorse/play brands other than PRS: Ibanez, Fender, Gibson, Washburn, and Tosin has his own brand.

This.

People have bloated opinions on what signatures are worth for many people. But hell, anything is worth as much as someone will pay for it.

Hell, for some things, putting someone's name on something of value could decrease the value. It also comes down to how many things those artists sign.

I'd imagine it'd be worth a fair bit more.

That post also reminded me about this:

There's some crappy guitars in there, but there's also some one off PRS prototypes and even one from 1976. I'd honestly be a little surprised if PRS isn't trying to win some of those back.

I keep it simple with a Ditto. Depends on what you need.

I just loop simple things and don't need multiple tracks I am jumping between. Really matters what you want to do with it. If you are new to loop pedals, start with the Ditto or Boss digital looper.

You can layer tracks on the ditto. It has a volume and stomp switch... that's it. It was my first looper years ago and is still the one I use, today.

I made a couple changes. Ditched the chrome tuning buttons for pearloid and tried Amber knobs. Despite what the picture looks like, the Amber knobs disappeared with the blue so I swapped back to the clear ones.

You know... I don't know what I think about my recent PRS guitars. There is no doubt that they are well built and the neck/fretboard on my S2 is one of the nicest I have played on. However, the PRS "sound" just isn't one I grew up listening to nor coveting.

When I pick up my Tele, LP, or strat, I hear those sounds and tones that made me want to learn to play guitar. the PRS has its own sound, for sure, but it's not necessarily one that makes me grin with happiness, the way my LP does.

Perhaps a pickup change may help, but I think it is more to do with the PRS style bridge played over a humbucker.

I've noticed a lot of people on the Facebook pages that immediately pull the PRS pickups out and grab something else. I've even seen a few of them that put in EMGs and squeeze the battery into the control cavity.

That's a pretty common sentiment with PRS stuff. Some folks seem to interpret that feeling as a "lack of mojo". As with anything, it comes down to personal preference. I love my PRSs. You're not alone in feeling that way. And I'm not sure if it's something that tweaks and pup swaps will ever quite iron out in a way that's satisfying to you if you're looking for a certain vibe and sound.

I'll pile on the new PRS posts. Bought myself a birthday present, Mark Holcomb SE. It has Seymour Duncan pickups and actually sounds really good. I don't typically like the bridge pickup by itself but it even sounds good on this setup.

I have a MIM HSS Strat from the 90s that is my gold standard for sound and feel and an Indonesian Jackson 7 string, and I think the pickups and sustain in this sound better. It doesn't have a floating bridge, so that may play into it (think it's a hipshot copy).

It's my first really pricey guitar (even though it's only an SE). so far I really like it.

Do you know what kind of SD's are in there? I have always been a fan of Seymour Duncan pickups and especially love their Antiquity line of pickups.

One time, back in college, I called the Seymour Duncan support number because I was trying to confirm which color conductor I need to solder where for some push/pulls. I swear the guy who answered was back in the shop, in the middle of winding a pickup. Heard background noise like in a work area. He was so chill and answered all of my questions. Absolutely great customer service. From that day on, I was a fan.

A guy on the PRS board is stripping an older Custom 24 he bought that he had previously redone with a color shifting paint. He's gotten to restaining the top at this point. Pretty cool thread if you're interested in that kind of stuff.

Really wish Fender would do more PRS style plus-tops. I love Strats, but damn if PRS doesn't have some of the nicest looking guitars, finish-wise on the market.

I will get lost on YouTube watching people restore guitars or build guitars out of various things. I would never have the patience to do that, but it looks like such a joy to be able to do, and then get to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

The most I do is swapping out electronics. I make that cavity look nice.

Huge props to that guy. Don't think I'll ever have the courage to do that sort of thing myself.

If I ever order a private stock PRS, that purple on page 2 is the color it'll be.

Hardest part is putting on the topcoat. When you first put it on - doesn't have 100% smooth finish described as orange peel. The better at painting you are, the less orange peel.

You sand it back to make it smooth. Depending on topcoat - you may need to wait a few weeks for it to cure so that it' really strong (especially in humid Houston). I got too antsy and decided to start the sanding process...burnt through the topcoat and into the paint. Will need another month plus to get this done right.
