So Mufasa was born with no nobility? Does that mean he rebels and kills the rightful king?

Might want to see this just to see how Disney handles it.

This looks interesting but I wish is was animation and not the "real" looking animals.

What if he pushes the rightful king into a herd of stampeding antelope?

You mean Scar, who's alive in The Lion King?

But Scar is the younger brother of Mufasa, so he wouldn't be the heir. Although the trailer says Mufasa isn't born into nobility, so maybe you have something if he is the older but adopted brother of Scar. Plus Scar isn't Scar yet, his name is Taka in this one according to IMDb. Who knows.

The plot according to Wikipedia is that the movie is Rafiki telling Simba's child the story of Mufasa's life with Timon and Pumbaa helping.

Yeah, older adopted brother usurps Scar/Taka's position.

It all feels very House of the Dragon, which I'm all in for.

no i'm saying what if it in the prequel, mufasa does the same thing. And then we realized he got what he deserved in the Lion King.

Whenever I hear that song or my kids watch Lion King 2 I'm reminded how different the entertainment landscape is now.

Disney created a sequel to a mega hit, with original music (including the truly elite He Lives in You), quality animation on par with the original, and got Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane and James Earl Jones to return as voice actors. But then released it straight to VHS without any theatrical run. An executive would get fired for suggesting that now.

It blows my mind they did that. And they almost did it with Toy Story 2.

I mean, the number of parents that bought that VHS for $24.99 off the shelf, which was more than they would have spent at the box office at the time…

It's hard to argue with the strategy in the 90s. It was money hand over fist, and all pretty calculated.

Today- do I think spending $250M on this sequel (assuming it cost what the first one cost, and it looks like it does, plus they probably paid Blue Ivy and Beyonc like $5M) makes sense? No. It's gonna do Wonka like numbers at the box office (which are great, just not on a $250M budget). And there are going to be no real residuals on streaming, because the entire audience for this is already paying to make sure we can keep Bluey on a near constant loop for our kids anyway.

He probably falls in love with Sarabi and has to prove himself to her father, who rules Pride Rock.

Or, it's a Romeo and Juliet scenario without the death.

It'll make way more than 250 million in my opinion. I have a young kid but I'd see it even if I didn't. I actually think this will be huge if they market it right. But this is the first im hearing of it so maybe the marketing isn't so great. But I'm guessing the big marketing push hasn't started.

I'm sure it turned a nice profit, but it's not like parents wouldn't have bought tickets in the theater first, and then bought the vhs for repeat viewing later.

Here's Disney's top 10 movies at the box office in 1998 fir comparison.

Lion King 2 would've easily outgrossed both Bug's Life and Mulan, especially if it got the full marketing machine behind it.

Mufasa apparently wants to watch the world burn.

From the EW review (which says it's not very good)

When the story begins, Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) is still a cub, beloved by his parents, until a flash flood separates them and leaves Mufasa to fend for himself in the world. He befriends Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), who rescues him from a crocodile. He then finds himself under the protection of Taka's mother, Eshe (Thandiwe Newton), despite King Obasi's (Lennie James) protestations that they don't take in "strays."

When a power-hungry pack of white lions led by Kiros (Mads Mikkelsen) seeks to eliminate every pride who stands in their way, Mufasa and Taka are forced on the run, teaming up with Sarabi (Tiffany Boone), who becomes the focal point of a love triangle between the adoptive brothers. While searching for the fabled paradise of Milele, they also encounter younger versions of Zazu (Preston Nyman) and Rafiki (Kagiso Lediga).

That's right kids, the villains are a group of "power hungry white lions" led by a guy recently seen playing a Nazi in Indiana Jones 5.

Seeing projections for domestic opening weekend being 47 - 52 million and combined global around 170 million…..

Sonic 3 should beat according to sources as well but don't know by how much

We saw Mufasa last night for my daughter's birthday. It was just ok as far as the story goes.

The "music" sung by the characters, however, was just awful. No catchy songs and nowhere near the level of The Lion King (Hakuna Matata, Can't Wait to be King, Be Prepared, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, etc.). There's a reason I can still name (and sing) those songs 30 years later. I was hugely disappointed in the songs in Mufasa.

This was my reaction too. I usually love LMMs stuff but nothing I found catchy in this movie.

No, bc my kids were way more interested in Wicked and Sonic 3.

I was spot fkn on here, though:

The trailer looks rather beautiful, but no one needs this cash grab. It will be lucky to do 1/3rd of what the previous one did.

I bet TC $100 of a charitable donation on the global box office of The Marvels. I think my prediction was off by $70 billion. TC being a gentleman tried to wave off the bet as the movie's lead up was during one of the Hollywood strikes where nobody could promote anything, so I donated the $100 to a cerebral palsy fund as my daughter has a mild case of it.

Also maybe it's just because I have YouTube premium and don't watch cable tv, but it seems like Disney wasn't marketing Mufasa particularly hard. Definitely nothing in the realm of Moana, Wicked or even Gladiator 2. I wonder if they knew it wasn't anywhere near the level of the original.
