It has somehow been SIX YEARS since we've had a feature film from David Fincher, my all-time favorite director...
1992 - Alien 3
1995 - Seven
1997 - The Game
1999 - Fight Club
2002 - Panic Room
2007 - Zodiac
2008 - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
2010 - The Social Network
2011 - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
2014 - Gone Girl
Granted, since Gone Girl, Fincher has directed episodes for and overseen two seasons of the incredible Mindhunter on Netflix, but as you can see above, we've never gone this long without a Fincher film since he began directing films in the early '90s.
Well, that all changes soon, as Fincher's next - Mank - is set for release in October in theaters and on Netflix. With a script written by Fincher's late father, Jack Fincher, Mank "re-evaluates 1930s Hollywood through the eyes of scathing social critic and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish the screenplay of Citizen Kane for Orson Welles. Gary Oldman fills the role of the titular screenwriter, while the impressive ensemble cast also includes Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies, Arliss Howard as Louis B. Mayer, and Tom Burke as Welles. Citizen Kane went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, credited to Mankiewicz and Welles, but controversy erupted over who wrote what. It's been a source of debate for decades."
And today, we finally have our first look via Netflix...
Gary Oldman as Herman J. Mankiewicz, Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies
Charles Dance as William Randolph Hearst
Gary Oldman as Herman J. Mankiewicz, Arliss Howard as Louis B. Mayer, Tom Pelphrey as Joe Mankiewicz
Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies
Lily Collins as Rita Alexander, Gary Oldman as Herman J. Mankiewicz
The screenplay for American, before being retitled Citizen Kane
... and yes, the film is presented entirely in black and white.
With these stills dropping today, and an October release for the movie itself, the first trailer should be right around the corner.
Can't wait.
