Well ******* it all to hell.

Halloween, Lion King, and Man of Steel in one group? How am I supposed to decide...

Well, I went with Halloween and JP.

My reasoning (not that anyone cares):

As fantastic as Lion King's score is, the most memorable part of that movie are Elton John's songs more so than Zimmer's score.

Man of Steel, which again is fantastic, is not quite as epic and memorable and Williams' original Superman score, nor quite as good as his scores for the TDK trilogy.

Halloween's score is instantly recognizable, memorable, iconic, and the best horror score of all time, even beating out Psycho. (Imho)

And Jurassic Park is, well, it's Jurassic Park. So it beats out The Dark Knight Rises, which is such a fantastic score in its own right. I love the Deshi Basara chant, it really makes that whole score for me.

Agree with all of this.

You made the correct choice.

Halloween was an easy pick. If singing was in the discussion, that'd be a really tough decision.

Outside of the big 2 soundtrack franchises - lotr and sw - man of steel is my favorite soundtrack of the 2000s.

Over Pirates? Gladiator? I mean I love it too, but that's some tough competition.

I only like the first POTC soundtrack. I would put gladiator 2nd and dark knight third of the non sw and lotr. The music and visuals of the opening krypton scenes of mos are off the charts for me.

Agreed. And the first flight always gives me chills.

JP is testing ESB for the #1 seed in the clubhouse through the first 6 hours of competition.
The other group is our first real three-way battle. And you never forget your first three-way.

Groups G and H are in the books and we have our first tie: The next 3 automatic qualifiers for the Round of 64 are: Group G was the first where at least 3 entries got at least 25% of the vote.

Group G: The Lion King & Halloween
Group H: Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park has displace Empire Strikes Back as the #1 seed in the clubhouse.
The new top 4 seeds if we started today are:

Jurassic Park
The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars
Blade Runner

Groups I and J will kick off in the next hour.

Groups I and J!
This isn't a plug for a vote, but even if you don't like Harry Potter, I would dutifully suggest you take 4 minutes to listen to "A Window to the Past" from the Prisoner of Azkaban soundtrack in Group J - one of my favorite pieces from a movie ever.

VOTE NOW

Group I

Diamonds are Forever

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Mission Impossible: Fallout

Return of the King

Group J

The Force Awakens

Me scrolling down Group I:

Diamonds are Forever: Okay, a Bond movie but not the best. Next.

Raiders: Pack it up, boys.

MI Fallout: Damn, this one is actually pretty good. Tough draw for MI.

ROTK: Pack it up, boys.

Group H: Really wanted to vote for Pearl Harbor. Really like that score, and Star Wars is already well represented.

But...Rey's Theme and The Jedi Steps are too good. The strength of those two tracks alone is enough to put it over the edge for me.

Just hoping Pearl Harbor gets enough love to move on.

Someone should write a musical ala Wicked about the life of that swordsman. How he was misunderstood and trying to provide for his family until some ******* American shot him in cold blood.

Although it isn't one of the better Bond movies, DAF is one of the best Bond scores. I nominated it on that basis. It won't win its group, of course. But it's worth the listen.

Another day, two more automatic qualifiers into the Field of 64

Group I: Raiders of the Lost Ark
Group J (by a single vote): Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Your new top 4 seeds if the tourney started today - or as John Williams calls it - a decent day's work -

1. Jurassic Park
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. Star Wars
4. Raiders of the Lost Ark

Groups K & L - and more musical anger - coming soon.

What's the over/under for how many of the top 20 vote-getters will come from Williams? I'd be surprised if it were less than 10.

He is arguably the modern equivalent to the most popular classical composers from previous eras. How will he be regarded 200, even 100 years from now?

I said it before and I'll say it again. John Williams may be the single most dominant force in the history of Hollywood. He's bigger than any actor, director or producer.

Groups K and L now open. Sorry, Christopher Nolan, assuming you're reading this thread. Also i apologize for the fact that I'm just going to read the Wikipedia entry on Tenet and then watch it on HBO next summer instead of going to the theater.

John Williams is our Beethoven or Mozart or Bach. He will be remembered for his compositions long after we're gone. Film has replaced opera as the stage, but the music is no less incredible.

He presently has 7 of the top 11 vote getters with the group phase about 40% done.
