I could actually see Bill Hader in the role.

Battleground pissed me off to such an extent, I don't think i've read a single book since. It literally soured me on reading.

Was hoping this was for a release date.

I'm almost through a second reading of the series to date, including all the novellas, currently in Peace Talks.

What was wrong with Battle Ground? I thought it was pretty wild and looking forward to the next time through

Battleground Spoiler
It was the ****ty dirty bull**** they did to one of our biggest characters.

Gah, that pissed me off.

The funny thing:

On April 1, 2019, Butcher posted "I killed someone I loved today" on Facebook. Everyone thought it was an April Fools joke. On July 22, 2019, he put on twitter "THE END. I love writing that." On his website, shortly thereafter, they used that post to announce that Peace Talks was done. I don't know when they decided to split Peace Talks up into two books, but given the release timeline Butcher always shares, it's conceivably the portion that became "Battle Ground" was wrapped in July 2019, and that he was writing it in April 2019. Meaning, Jim Butcher dropped a massive spoiler on April Fools day, and it got played off as a joke, but the real joke is that he was serious.

I don't think there is any way Murph doesn't come back into the story. I expect her to show up the second after Dresden has sex with another woman. Granted, that could be 4 books down the road with his record.

That would actually really bother me. Up to this point, consequences of actions have been at the core of the Dresden Files. To go through all of that, and kill off such a primary character, just to pull off a "just kidding!" would make any other stakes much less impactful.

Dresden's death I view as different because he literally is our main character, and I actually think it was handled incredibly well

I just think they have been setting up Murph as Dresden's guardian angel for the entire series, and they will now literally give her that title.

OK that's what I figured.
Pissed me off too, but I thought it was great storytelling.
Like said above, this series is all about choices and free will, and her death is going to give Harry a lot to unpack in the aftermath.

I was fine with it. I liked Murphy fine but she wasn't a favorite of mine. A lot of the conflicts from the earlier books arose from Dresden thinking that Murph couldn't handle whatever it was and her getting pissed at being kept in the dark, then she ended up holding her own. I feel like they were past that, and I didn't like them as a couple so I don't see where she would fit in with whatever is to come. The level of bad guys has been constantly increasing and it is getting to the point where vanilla mortals won't be able to hang, so it was either jim having to write her with some massive plot armor or get rid of her. She could possibly come back as a valkyrie or something similar, or some kind of guardian angel that was mentioned. Maybe in mirror mirror we'll see an alternate world's karen. Either way, it was sad but I was perfectly ok with it

My issue wasn't necessarily that it happened. My issue was the throw-away method Butcher used to kill her off. If you're going to kill off a main character or big supporting character, you add more fanfare. Hell, Susan got the culmination of a 10-book arc, and some of the best lines Butcher's written or Marsters has read.

I get that, but at the same time it kinda highlights what I said before about things getting too big. She had just taken down that big whatever, can't remember the name, but gets taken out by a single bullet from a handgun. She'd been going toe to toe with things more powerful than her for so long her luck was bound to run out. There's also something wrongly poetic, for lack of a better term, about her being killed by the same guy who threatened to kill dresden if she got hurt in an earlier book. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if there was a big bad pulling strings behind the scenes and her death having more weight behind it. Maybe Rudy was Nfected, or maybe Lara had been planning the marriage for awhile and needed murph out of the way. That would be a huge thing for Dresden to learn right before their marriage. Then Mab demands he goes through with it, giving him the motivation to finally get rid of the winter mantle

In my view that's part of what makes it great.

Harry has been in way over his head for years and has come out on top, albeit pretty scarred. Karrin's dying by the hand of someone so pitiful on the grand stage crashed him back down.

Reminds me of the opening of Saving Private Ryan where that soldier takes a bullet in the helmet, and while he's marveling at it, another one takes his head off. Just instant unexpected calamity that drives home how brutal the fight really is

I am almost positive it will happen, because it sets up Harry having to deal with sexual relations with other women while having Murphy (probably literally) sitting on his shoulder the entire time. Thats too good of an opportunity to pass up.

Thanks! Sadly, I don't really know what that is but I sure appreciate you thinking of it.

On a side note: I have read Brief Cases and none of those stories were in it. However, when I looked up Brief Cases Jim Butcher it took me to a couple which they call "Microfiction" but these were little more than a few paragraphs, maybe a page worth. I wonder if that was all there is to them?
