I love Metallica but cannot stand Lars. I feel like maybe the reason I like James/Kirk/Trujillo so much is in contrast to Lars.

Mike Portnoy has got to be the hardest working drummer in music if not one of the best.

Mike Portnoy has even said that the new guys coming up are better than him.

Why is it that metalheads always think metal players are the best drummers? Because they go fast and play rudiments fast? I went to a clinic by Simon Philips back in the early 90's. Back then he was playing 3 over 4, switching back and forth between LF,RH to LF,RF, etc and then go to 5 over 3 and on. It was mind blowing.

So many genres but my tops in no particular order:
Vinnie Coliauta- amazing at odd time signatures
Steve Smith - find some of his really technical stuff of his own albums - wow
Carter Beauford- he's his own style. Great mix of funk and jazz and so technically good.
Dave Weckyl- arguably the best all around drummer
Steve Gadd- ground breaking drummer. I could listen to Aja over and over because of his solo
Gavin Harrison - so musical and technically proficient.
Simon Phillips- find some of his new in studio stuff. You will understand.
Benny Greb-. What he can do with a small kit is impressive.

There are more but these days so many are excelling, it's hard to limit. BTW, these threads always seems like they are started by metal guys,. That's the only reason I made my first statement. They're are very good but it seems that they think they are only ones playing hard drum parts.

That's Kenny Aranoff and it's not even close.

No one has mentioned Jim Keltner for both the best and the hardest working?

I'm pretty sure MF Barnes is the hardest working drummer in the drumming business.

I just want to point out that the song/drummer I proposed is far from fast tempo. Tool is rarely fast tempo.

I would not classify Tool as metal. They deserve a genre of their own because they are so unique.

Also, my nominee Tomas Haake does not just play fast tempo rudiments. What he and Meshuggah do is far more complex than just playing fast.

But to answer your question; metal heads probably pick metal drummers because they are more familiar with that group of drummers. It is certainly a bias but it is one we all have...

also many metal drummers can play a lot of styles in addition to metal. Look at drummer from Opeth, Axe. That guy is diversified as hell. But someone like carter Or someone like him I bet can't play hella fast double kick or a blast beat.

To be fair, Gavin Harrison has a video demonstrating a bass drum herta (same as from "Bleed") that he uses to come out of a solo.

That's not where you lost me. Thinking he can't play hella fast double kick or blast beat is where you lost me.

We did that crap in high school because we thought it was cool and hard. Great endurance training, but not hard or great musically. I've heard and seen him do vastly more difficult things than play fast and loud.

Carter is a fantastic drummer - jazz background and those tend to be the best drummers honestly.

*He has the unique background of learning to play as a left hand lead on a right hand kit which made him become more fully ambidextrous than most drummer are. He can play a right or left handed kit equally - most drummers cannot do that at least not equally as well both ways they have a dominant hand for rhythm.

Yeah, you are right. I'm not a big Tool fan but I do like Carvey. He is more creative than most in his genre. I do have lots of tools, though.

Here's some ridiculous speed. Todd Sucherman is also one of my favorites. I didn't know who he was until I saw Styx several years ago and I had to look him up after the concert. He was just so good in person.

Wanna give a nod to Alex Bent over at Trivium. Such an incredible player and I was sold after the first measure of The Sin and the Sentence. Their new album just dropped yesterday and going through it and again am blown away by his skill AND groove(for the metal haters out there).

A cool drumming vid by Alex Rudinger I stumbled across. I mentioned him previously. Pretty neat stuff. Demonstrates some cool timing patterns. I need to get my hat foot working better.

just wanted to highlight a talented drummer.

Tacking on another of some of his work on an actual song. Love this piece.

Do yallselves a favor and check this video out.

It takes a lot for me to be wow'ed these days but wow. The professionalism and sheer ability of Larnel Lewis is incredible. I came across his name a few years ago with his gospel chops and the stuff he has put out since is otherworldly.

Best Drummer? Can't say. Does Larnel compare to all the other names listed here so far? Absolutely.

I have a new favorite. Maybe a new favorite musician actually.

In the spirit of Neil Peart, I offer Tyler Warren. This is absolutely amazing.

That's actually amazing - for those that don't realize as I didn't until watching - he plays the entire album and he plays EVERY instrument and sings too.

A one person Rush.

Exactly. Plus the playing and production is spot on. It's just a spectacular technical recreation of an entire album. The dude's just incredible.

Just pointing out, it's entirely different learning to play a difficult song on drums, or guitar for that matter, than it is to create it.

It's cool what he's done though.
