People who think rock is dead likely only listen to rock they hear on the radio.

Or they are fans of grunge, the most boring, simplistic, uninspired, and ****stain era of rock music.

If rock is dead, it's because it hasn't recovered from the downtuned power chords and cringeworthy vocals (Pearl Jame not included) from the grunge era.

Do you count AIC as grunge? They were badass. Soundgarden too. And STP.

Grunge music stole his girlfriend or something. He has made that almost exact post on here many times

Exactly. Cringeworthy vocals? Chris Cornell? Layne Staley? Scott Weiland?

Like moths to a flame, one of the most predictable things on this site is Mazag bleeding over a grunge thread. I don't think I've ever seen someone hate a music genre as much. It's weird.

As a Pearl Jam superfan, how can anyone with the ability to hear think Eddie Vedder is awesome but Chris Cornell is cringe worthy?

That makes absolutely no sense.

Most of the mid 1990s was a musical menstrual cramp.

The last 10-20 years don't have as many great rock songs as the prior decades, which is why "modern rock" has to reach way back.

A modern rock playlist (94.5 the Buzz in Houston) has a wide timeframe from Nirvana to The Unlikely Candidates and 21 Pilots. You can still hear the occasional Aerosmith or GnR song, as well. Even though I'm a hardcore classic rock guy (1969-1990) the Buzz playlist is pretty good.

Rock has been around 65 years. If it were human, it would be looking to retire. I'm no longer looking for a good era or band or favorite genre. I'm just looking to continue to build a collection of great songs. I've found that there was a heavy concentration of great songs from '75-'86. There was a lot of popular trash (KISS and disco), but you had Queen, Boston, Van Halen, The Eagles, Tom Petty, Prince, SRV, and George effin' Strait to name a few great sources.

There are great songs from every era. Man in the Box, Yellow Ledbetter, Broken Hearted Savior, The Way by Fastball, Beast of Burden, Under the Bridge, etc.

As for the last 2 decades- maybe the White Stripes, Weezer, Black Keys, and Volbeat?

Bringing up White Stripes is kind of interesting, to me. They don't really reach a huge audience bc of Jack's unique style, and their biggest hit has been turned into a generic rally cry in sports venues.

I also wonder how history will look at Creed's place in rock music. They were the biggest bands in the world for a while. Has the populace ever turned on a band faster? They might have the honor of raising and then killing rock's popularity.

I think The Killers belongs in the convo for the last 20 years. Their first two albums in particular were great and a huge part of the rise of alternative/indie rock into the mainstream in the early 00's.

Edit: Throw in The Strokes as well.

Queens of the Stone Age needs to be on the list for best bands of the last 20 years.

Rock isn't dead, but it's definitely a relic. Like jazz and blues, it was only a matter of time. Country probably has the same fate. If you think about it, modern country has a lot of similarities to rock in the late 90s and early 2000's with the genre crossovers. Probably a sign that it's coming to an end. 20 years from now, will there even be musical genres in popular music?

I'd toss Muse onto that list too.

I think the phenomena that OP describes is attributable to another factor that no one has really discussed:

The DJs spinning the records are the same people that were spinning them 20-30 years ago. There was a time when being a DJ was an aspirational gig. It came with a certain modicum of (albeit in many cases local) fame and respect. But with the onset of digital media formats and devices that could cue up anything on demand at any time, the traditional role of the DJ just seems to have stagnated. And since they get what 8-10 songs per hour, both market research probably tells them to stick to a relatively narrow core playlist. Just a thought. May be completely wrong.

Even worse than that....the DJs don't get to choose what the play. It's all sent down from corporate now.

Popular music is already almost genre-less. Switch between a country station, rock station, top 40, etc. Most of what you hear could be played on any of them.

Nickelback? Coincidentally now on tour with STP lol.

Yet alter bridge is pretty well like/respected in the hard rock world. Amazing what a different singer can do.

I feel like System of a Down often gets overlooked, probably because they were only around for about 10 years, but man, they were HUGE for kids of my generation. I basically had Mezmerize on my car stereo for my entire senior year of high school.

Kind of sucks they've mostly fallen off the face of the Earth. Really hoping they get back together and put out another album.

To me, when I first heard them, they sounded like a grunge rip off. Stapp and his vocals are annoying. Also, Arms Wide Open is maximum cheesiness despite attempting to be earnest.

Popular bands and songs will be judged and sentenced over time. A band that is big because it's being shoved into the public by "the machine" may be an all time classic, or in a decade we (the real music fans) will judge it as trash and dispose of it properly.

The shame is In bands that make great songs and never get discovered.

This is why we still listen appreciatively to U2 and laugh about Warrant. I love Warrant, by the way, but I realize that's because I was 17 when I heard "Down Boys". I thought I was a Down Boy and I still don't have a clue what a Down Boy is.

Not a fan of the grunge music overall, but the vocals I hate are actually limited to Nirvana and the bands that followed that tried to duplicate Cobain's vocal style. I have nothing against most of the others. Vedder is awesome. I wasn't a fan of Cornell in Audioslave but do like him in Soundgarden.

Listen to their debut album, and then listen to their last record.

They want from aggressive and unique to radio friendly ballads at the same speed as a puppy becoming full grown.

The early 2000's were full of "nu metal" bands that kids of that era had the same connection as kids in the grunge era to grunge.

Disturbed, Mudvayne, Seether, Nonpoint, POD, Linkin Park, Korn, SOAD, Godsmack, Drowning Pool, Sevendust, Chevelle, Papa Roach, 3 Days Grace, Hoobastank..etc

These bands were huge in the early 2000's. But angsty rock doesn't last long, just like grunge only lasted long enough to inspire most of these bands. The ones that have made it long term have either commercialized their sound or matured their sound, just as their fans grow up and mature their preferences.

As someone who graduated high school in 05, most of the rock we listened to was hardly ever played on the radio. I'm curious how history will judge some of the bands I loved, bands like Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, etc.

A couple good bands that ended the era might be Boston & The Dire Straits.

Boston came out in 76. Don't Look Back in 78. Dire Straits was released in 78. Both bands were extremely successful in the 80's but they had that classic rock sound and familiarity. Though even Dire Straits are a tweener.

U2 probably represents the firm break and beginning of a new era in rock n roll. Different completely and they debuted in 1980.

Good post.
