Forrest Carter's Gone to Texas is a good read. If you have a favorite old western movie, there's likely a novel behind it somewhere.

I have a soft spot for Louis L'amour since my grandfather gave me most of his books to read as a kid. The Sackett's stories are good, somewhat formulaic, but I liked them. Walking Drum is really good, not really a western.

The Border Trilogy. I'm halfway through the The Crossing. All the Pretty Horses was amazing. Long, detailed, typical Cormac McCarthy but as a Texan who's driving all over the state and had many road trips into New Mexico and along the Rio Grande into Mexico, I love it.

If you're a Texan that has spent any time in the hill country or SW Texas, read it.
