You thought Frances Ha was depressing? I thought it was hilarious and actually pretty hopeful in the end.

How does this movie compare to The Squid and the Whale? That was a Baumbach film about a recently divorced family. Supposedly based on his parents splitting. Jeff Daniels was fantastic in that film and Laura Linney was really good too. My guess was that Baumbauch was the younger brother.

OK I haven't read the thread yet, I'll go back and read it after this posting, but this movie pretty much made me ugly cry all by myself. So heartbreaking. If a movie is supposed to make you feel things, not always good, then this was a great movie. I don't even know what else to say. I need to like, recover from it, go home, hug my wife and kids and pray for a while, haha.

Finally got around to watching it and really enjoyed it. Deserving of all the noms. I would vote Driver over Phoenix but I doubt that will happen.
- Lawyers are pure evil.
- 80% of the movie I kept thinking, "Am I supposed to feel bad for ScarJo even a little? Because I don't.." The only two times I turned on Driver were when we learned he did cheat and then when he switched lawyers. Other than that I was completely on his side. He had much better points in their argument and of course the gem that she says something like "we should have never gotten lawyers involved" and he replies "If you remember at the beginning I told you that." lol
- How in the hell is Laura Dern the runaway favorite for Best Supporting Actress??? She was good, but basically the same character as she plays in Big Little Lies. A powerful and confident woman. In BLL we get to see through some of the confidence, but even so, here I just felt she was being Laura Dern.

This movie looks and sounds depressing AF. Serious dramas centered around broken marriages are a no-go zone for me. One of the most depressing topics I can personally think of...to the point where I do not even get the appeal, or the demand for such a theme in the first place. Is it just to watch their acting performances?
That being said, kind of refreshing that it sounds like they didn't make the woman the absolute victim with flawless character and the man the bumbling idiot with a corrupt soul and a lust for hurting his wife. Sounds like a pretty realistic portrayal where maybe both figures are sympathetic characters, and perhaps even moreso for the man in this case. Pretty bold for Hollywood these days if you ask me.
What is it with people coming into threads on something they haven't watched and giving their opinions? You think your ignorant opinion is something we want to hear? What could you possible think you are going to add to the conversation when you haven't even seen the damn film?Boo Weekley said:

This is not a thread to air your relationship baggage. Watch the film or dont bother.
