The albums list seemed to be a little more reasonable than the songs list but both have insane picks in them. Even if you look past the almost complete absence of rock music there is also no pop in these lists either. I know Pitchfork gonna Pitchfork but some wild choices here.

Probably 10% pop...seems right

Not a great list but if you like music, probably worth listening through a few times to see if there is anything you missed.

I love a few songs on the list. Many others are fine and there are quite a few that I don't think very good at all. A bunch of the hip hop stuff I have not heard.

Well... I hate hiphop and pop, but the bands that don't fall into that category did indeed have great records.

This is the decade I've become out of touch with popular music. So many songs I've never heard of.

Only about 3 of those songs I know, and none I've listened to more than twice. I've not even heard of most of those groups/ singers. What a sorry state music has reached. And yes, I'm old.

I spent the last decade really into pretentious music. I followed blogs, read indieheads and hiphopheads pretty religiously, all that business. It was exhausting. I recognize maybe 60% of that 200 songs list.

The problem with that whole scene is that people look for the trendsetters to say what is good, then everyone just co-signs it. The problem with Pitchfork is that it's entirely too self-aware. I am convinced they will pick a song or album and rate it highly based on that awareness (i.e., we've put too much indie pop in here, we need to add a rap song to keep our credibility, now we need to add a folk song, don't forget Beyonce or people will riot, etc).

It's maddening and impossible to follow.

Also, GKMC is wildly superior to TPAB. In pretty much every way.

Completely agree, TPAB being that high was the most surprising thing on that list

And if the number one album only produces 1 song on the top 200 list, it probably isn't the number 1 album.

Just a ****ty list in general, the people at pitchfork shouldn't wonder why people hate them.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy should have been #1 instead of #2.

But yeah... My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy should be 1

I'd be willing to bet recent Kanye shenanigans cost him the number one spot with the Pitchfork team. That and the fact it's a mainstream and wildly popular album, which is always a negative with Pitchfork.

I found it interesting, because I remember that 'Midnight City' was their top track of 2011, so I found it interesting that there were several songs from that same year ahead of it on the list.

Interestingly, they ranked Video Games by Lana Del Rey as #19 of the year back in 2011, but now its #9 of the whole the decade.

Those writeups are exhausting. I can't imagine being a music journalist these days. It must suck to have to come up with so many words about how important everything is.

That is interesting, but it makes sense; some music just has more staying power.

Heck, "Weird Al" Yankovic's Bad Hair Day just hit double platinum, 23 years after release.
JJxvi

I dunno about Video Games having more staying power...maybe Midnight City actually got "too popular" in the middle part of the decade when it was in every other show and commercial and so Pitchfork took it down a peg.

Yea I noticed that too. Definitely thought there would be more St Vincent, the album "St Vincent" won the damn Grammy and should have been in the top 50. Masseduction should have been in the mix too, but the writers would have to remove some no name bands that sound like static.
And having Arcade Fire's album "Suburbs" not top 20 was laughable right up there with Beyonc and Solange gross overrated music.

Right. I saw Raconteurs tonight and thought they might make it.

Interesting that Sturgill made it but didn't see Isbells Southeastern which kinda created a genre of music.

Not a bad list given they were trying to list 200 songs. I only liked about 50 songs out of the 200 though.

Americana has been around for a long time. Jason Isbell didn't invent it, he's just done it really ****ing well.

Alright isn't even the best song from TPABF much less the best song of the decade. And I like it! Weird list.

Its too high at #2 as it is. And I love that album but nope. Kanye <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Kendrick. Kendrick easily has 3 albums better than that. Easily.

Disagree strongly. Kendrick doesn't have an album even close in terms of production quality or content with MDTF. There is a reason Elton John said it was the best album he had been a part of since the 70's. I encourage you to read up about how the album was created and how West made everything from scratch. Incredible production.

Love Kendrick and Good Kid Maad City, but disagree. Damn. is great too, but it's not even in the discussion against MBDTF, and suggesting TPAB is better than it will make you lose credibility.

But to each his own.

I mean losing credibility on TecAgs about hip hop isn't something I'm going to lose sleep over. In this very thread Elton John is brought up when talking about 2 rap albums which says it all about this place for discussing the genre.

I'm sure a lot of you would run circles around me discussing some of the non rap albums but I also doubt many of you have listened to as much rap as me. But as you said, to each their owns.

I've listened to enough rap to know Kanye's best album is better than Kendrick's best album.

I could see where that comes from though. If you are at the end of 2011 EDM is having a huge resurgence so M83 looks like good mix of EDM influence and indie pop which could be the next big thing. Born to Die came out late in the year and wasn't really until Summertime Sadness in 2012 that it really picked up mainstream.
