God I haven't heard of 80% of those albums.

Interesting to see some metal in there.. 2 bands I actually have heard of, deafhaven and pallbearer.

It's amazing to me how hard rock and metal have just been removed from the world unless you are looking for it.

There are modern metal bands doing absolutely ridiculous things, and most people have never heard of them. It's so sad.

Joanna Newsom has been around since like 2002 (fun fact, she's married to Andy Samberg), she was really popular with the DJ's at KANM while I was there in 04-08. I never really understood the appeal, her voice on Milk-Eyed Mender is like nails on a chalk board to me. It looks like her voice has gotten better since then but I still don't get it.

Can't tell if these are completely self indulgent or if I'm just totally out of touch with popular music.

Probably both

Just picked 5 random songs on that list and listened to them.

Complete and utter trash.

This list did make me go back and dig out the Frank Ocean mixtape "nostalgia, ultra" and I forgot how good it actually was. I don't know if Channel Orange is a top 10 album of the decade, or if Talkin Bout You is a top 5 song, but they are extremely solid choices.

I've always thought that Channel Orange was just ok, not bad but not top 10 or anything... but especially when compared to Nostalgia Ultra. Like you said, that thing is amazing.

Any thoughts on Blond? My hipster hip hop head friend thinks its a masterpiece. I've listened to two or three songs and thought they were boring.

Yeah, people went nuts over it, but I really think that had more to do with the strength of Channel Orange than anything. I really think an artist can release an album that is so strong and resonates so consistently with the masses that the next album is glorified before it even really is listened to. That's not to say it's bad; actually, it's often really good. It's just that people want so much to be on board with an artist after a "transcendent" album that the next one can do no wrong. I think that was the case with TPAB and GKMC for Kendrick Lamar. Same with Yeezus and MBDTF for Kanye. I personally think TLOP is better than Yeezus, and that DAMN is better than TPAB, but what do I know.

I think it's especially true when the single(s) from the next album are really strong. Like "Ivy", which is a really different, really beautiful song that I think made people form an opinion about the album as a whole.
