Is this movie a sequel to Kubrick's movie, or an adaptation of the book?
Dr Sleep is a sequel to the book "the shining", which while not impossible, does have some differences from the film that would make it harder to do as a sequel (imo) to the Kubrick film.

That's why I ask.

So you're thinking straight adaptation, not making it a sequel to Kubrick?

To be honest, I've never read the books and I feel like most people are more familiar with the movie The Shining than the book, so I feel like it would be a mistake to not tie it into the movie as much as they could. But we'll see.

well, Halloran doesn't die in the book so in the sequel, he plays a part in the story after the first book. it's not massive, imo, but it adds value.

that might be kind of jarring if he is in this movie, but maybe they leave him out.
